Remembering Hillsborough

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. I know the grief is not confined to Liverpool, but as a scouser today, I want to share my memories of that day.

My dad is a staunch Liverpool FC supporter. He has held a home season ticket for as long as I can remember, but hardly ever goes to away games. I remember that day was unseasonably warm, I was 11 years old, and my dad was on his way to Sheffield for the game. I was with my mum and my grandparents, going to a market in Prescot as we always did on a Saturday.

We were in the car, and my grandad had the radio on. I remember hearing the reports on the radio, the commentator had total panic and hysteria in his voice, I don't really recall what was said, but I know the atmosphere in the car completely changed, and we headed for home, much earlier than usual. As far as we were aware, my dad was in the Leppings Lane terrace, and my mum must have been completely distraught. I know she held it together for me as I don't remember her weeping or wailing at all.

We got back to my grandparents house, and just as we were about to call the family and friends helpline, my dad rang. He had got a stand ticket about half an hour before the match, from a friend of a friend, and was safe and on his way home.

My mum and I went home, and I stayed outside, waiting for him to come home. When he finally pulled up, I asked him what had happened, and he merely shook his head and went inside the house. I remember he sat down, and didn't speak for about a week. It was awful, the tension was unbearable.

To this day, my dad has never spoken about what he saw, but in his more emotional moments, he has told me how he felt when he pulled up and saw me standing at the top of the road waiting for him to come home. He has never even looked at a copy of The Sun since.

One of my schoolfriends lost her dad, my dad lost one of his friends.

I just wanted to get all that out, and pay tribute to the families of the 96 people that weren't as lucky as we were on 15th April 1989.

The Sun said a few weeks ago that they had received a press release type thing from some newspaper in Bradford, in which the journalist (from Bradford) had said that they had witnessed the livepool fans doing all of the stuff that was later found to be lies.

The Sun, being 'sensationalist' (and shit) obviously wanted to run the story first, without questioning whether it was actually true or not.

The rest is history.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/04/2009 11:34

Even if it was the case that a few fans had behaved like that (and I AFAIK there is no evidence to suggest it was) it's still a deliberate choice to make that the headline rather than the majority who helped the victims, or any other aspect of the tragedy . God the man must be a tosser.

My memory of that day is travelling up in the car with my bf to visit a stately home. As we were travelling up we saw loads and loads of supporters in cars and mini buses.

We had a lovely day then as we were coming home the news was on the radio. Then we got home and saw the coverage. Bloody awful end to a lovely day and what a sad sad loss of life!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/04/2009 11:35

That's interesting QM.

charleymouse · 15/04/2009 11:55

So glad your Dad was okay PJ even though the memories will be with him forever.

I was working in a pub in Sheffield that afternoon and you could hear ambulances all afternoon. We had people dropping in for a drink on their way home and telling us what had happened. I didn't catch the news until later.

As a Sheffielder I am ashamed of the role South Yorkshire Police took in this tragedy. Knowing some of the mounted police and some medical personnel who were there that day I know some of the problems just escalated and were out of everyones control. The whole city was in mourning.

My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone affected by the tragedy.

The BBC have a very moving, emotive link here- the narratives are heartbreaking.

QM - I can't view that video for some reason. In some ways I am glad I can't. We're going to listen to the memorial service in ten minutes.

You probably don't want to see it PJ - very disturbing, frightening and sad although also heartening to see people bravely, desperately trying to save others, again confirming how ridiculous and evil the Sun's stories were.

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/04/2009 14:19

I remember the day well, a friend from school had attended the match with his dad, we had no idea where he had tickets for, luckily it was a stand ticket, but to have been sat above the unfolding events as a 15 year old must have been the most harrowing thing he had ever been through. As an avid Liverpool fan I watched the whole thing live on tv, having sat down expecting to watch a football match. I really believe the reports should be reopened and I think this aniversary may finally cause this to happen as people have finally been allowed to reflect on events without and press sensationalisation. There must be justice for the 96 before their families can have "closure" on the day.

smallorange · 15/04/2009 14:25

Radio Four's Today programme had a very thoughtful and moving piece on Hillsborough this morning.

DP and I were in tears listening to it.

I was at university in Sheffield and it's a great city. So sorry for all the families who lost people and everyone who witnessed it.

Pinkjenny · 15/04/2009 15:27

Heartbreaking listening to all the names being read out.

I think the youngst lad was 10.

QuantitativeMeasure · 15/04/2009 15:35

The 10 year old was Steven Gerrards cousin

geordieminx · 15/04/2009 15:37

God I'm in tears watching this.

I thought for a minute that he was going to announce that they were going to re-open the enquiry

Pinkjenny · 15/04/2009 15:38

Am cringing at the boos, but I totally understand why they are reacting like this.

OP posts:
QuantitativeMeasure · 15/04/2009 15:38

what side is it on?

Pinkjenny · 15/04/2009 15:39

We're watching it on the BBC News website.

have looked at the BBC site linked to and read the majority of the other site linked to

the whole thing was firstly pretty much avoidable, although looking at the pics again and reading what happend, it is amazing that 96 people died, rather than 100s. the pictures make you feel clautrophobic, you can;t even imagine what it must have been like to have been in there. and the whitewashing that went on and shifting of blame.

i don;t know how the police involved who stood back and ignored the dying in front of them can sleep

never midn what was printed in teh sun

i was 13 when it happened, and reading it all again now, having my own children, my son goes to the footie someitmes with my dad, i just see it in a whole different light

just cannot believe the endemic level of lying and corruption that went on
