Here

And at a 12stone dog too! It'd have totally flattened a child.

Hmm just come back to this. Gosh it took off a bit!

Poor Fimbo and her dd. Really I can completely understand why you feel so upset. How awful

I was nipped by a dog on a lead recently while I was out running. I gave him a wide berth etc but he still got me. It seems I'm always dodging round peoples dogs (usually off leads where I live) and their deposits.
Now I feel really edgy when a dog bounds up to me.

Pro dog people on here probably do keep their pets under control in the main. That's good; but many of us seem to be encountering an awful lot who don't. Nor do they clean up behind their pets either. It becomes so sickening to have to deal with it, so of course people become very anti-dog. I would disagree with you dollius when you say 'As dog owners, we all KNOW that we have to keep our dogs under control' Some do, many don't. Well they might know it but they don't do much about it.

It doesn't have to result in an attack either to be a problem. Some people just don't like being hassled by dogs friendly or otherwise. I don't. I'm not even especially frightened, I just don't like 'em much. When you're trying to have a picnic and one leaps in and destroys it. I even had a dog launch itself in our pushchair once. Actually, the dogs nose in the pushchair routine used to be a regular thing. Just the right height I guess.

If you get fed up with anti dog attitudes then the root of those attitudes lies with the significant amount of owners who do not take resposibility or control. There are quite a few around.

Dollius -it is upsetting to see so much vitriol aimed at dog owners generally when it is just not deserved, - perhaps if I was a dog owner I would feel this way too but I am not.

I think there are more and more dog incidents these days, certainly I have seen more over the last few years. I live in a small village and you are actually in the minority if you don't have a dog.

I guess this thread will go round and round in circles for days everybody throwing their tuppence in and thinking they are right.

Fimbo · 01/04/2009 16:47

Thank you TC.

Stayingsunnygirl · 01/04/2009 16:55

Perhaps (being tongue-in-cheek as an effort to lighten things) the problem is that as mums, we all know that we're right.

Maybe people who don't like dogs should never go out

onagar · 01/04/2009 17:15

One of my neighbours (a respectable looking elderly guy) takes his dog to the nearby toddlers play area because it's fenced in. He lets the dog off the lead inside to shit so he can stand by the gate to stop him escaping.

I guess he'd say dogs have rights too if challenged.

Those complaining that where they live there IS no place suitable to let them off the lead have answered their own question. They can't own dogs because they don't have the facilities to look after them properly. just as you can't own an elephant or a herd of sheep if you live in a flat.

Nancy66 · 01/04/2009 17:24

I would shovel the shit up and post it back through his letterbox.

TsarChasm · 01/04/2009 17:29

That's right onagar - that absolutely sums it up.

And yes I laugh (wryly) about dogs being entitled to this and that. Their entitlement doesn't trump a human beings.

Weeeeeell i dunno about that.

My lovely collie vs my BIL - ooh tough one .

Fimbo · 01/04/2009 17:36

Isn't there a saying that many people ending up looking like their dogs

Fimbo · 01/04/2009 17:38
Grin

wotulookinat · 01/04/2009 18:16

I wish I looked like either of my dogs. Sadly not

ruty · 01/04/2009 18:55

oh for goodness sake can't people tell the difference between dog hating and dog-owner hating. I am staggered at the behaviour of dog owners. I see it almost every day, it is endemic. The responsible dog owners [like the ones on this thread] are in the MINORITY.

Once again, I grew up with dogs. The beloved dog of my childhood will always be in my heart. But i have had so many awful experiences with dogs/owners in the last 5 years and stating them does not make me a dog hater for crying out loud.

Stayingsunnygirl · 01/04/2009 19:16

You can only go by your own experienc, ruty, and it sounds like the dog owners who live near you shouldn't be allowed to have dogs. I guess I am lucky - the dogs round here are lovely - and so are the owners.

I've just spent 10 minutes outside with the owners of two dogs, watching the two of them (the dogs not the owners) running around together, playing hide and seek round the trees, and having a lovely time with eachother and with all of us. The dogs did as they were told and were a pleasure to be with.

If all dogs and owners were like this, I think there'd be far fewer objections.

wotulookinat · 01/04/2009 19:18

You're completely right, StayingSunny.

TheSynOddOneOfWhitby · 01/04/2009 19:50

Responsible dog owners are NOT in a minority - what an hilarious thing to say!

dollius · 01/04/2009 20:06

No, I don't see how you can say we are in the minority either. I see lots of dogs every day BIG dog-owning country round here), and only ever see happy, well-behaved people and dogs.

ruty · 01/04/2009 20:12

well funny that. on holiday on the beach, dog shit on several occasions, ds narrowly avoided stepping in it several times. in germany, attacked by dog. Where we live, ds knocked over three times, picked up dog poo with his bare hands twice, every day we have to avoid dog shit on the pavement. clean my shoes of dog shit regularly. It is outrageous actually, and i think you are deluded if you think otherwise.

FfreckleFface · 01/04/2009 20:18

Absolutely not getting into another dog thread.

chegirl · 01/04/2009 20:29

Of course people should keep their dogs under control. That is a no brainer isnt it?

Of course dog owners are not the most selfish people in the world. That a bit mad.

Some of the most selfish people in the world are dog owners maybe

We dont tend to take notice of well behaved dogs. We notice the badly behaved ones and their selfish owners because we have to keep and eye on them.

What about cats? They get on my nerves and they poo in my garden, dig up my plants and sit on the wall making noise at 3 am. I dont think cat owners are the scum of the earth and I certainly wouldnt advocate a mass cull. Most people who get a cat knows that it will spend a great deal of time out of their supervision (like you can supervise a cat!). Does that mean no one should ever get one?

Nancy66 · 01/04/2009 20:39

I wonder how many cats have killed children? Hmmmm

chegirl · 01/04/2009 20:47

Not many I would imagine. Unless you count toxiplasmosis.

But you dont have to kill a child to be APITA. And the majority of dog 'incidents' are APITA rather than fatal.

Cars have killed squillions though.

I think dogs should be kept under control and they should be insured. If you have health insurance for you dog liability insurance is included anyway.

So I am hardly going to argue that dogs should be allowed to jump all over OAPs and savage small children. I am not that exciting I am afraid.

Still dont think all dogs are horrible and all owners are selfish though

ruty · 01/04/2009 21:35

yes well you have to have to have lessons and pass a stringent test to drive a car. shame the same isn't true for dog owners.
