objections to affordable homes by snobby villagers - This makes me so angry!

Living in devon myself, this makes me so annoyed.

The worst of it is that most of them are 2nd home owners and don't even live there. And the proposal is only for six houses ffs.

I can't bear NIMBY attitudes.

hate insert where appropriate. have always said that instead of paying 90% council tax, they should pay 10x if their house is occupied less than 80% of the time. That would bloody ensure fewer empty houses and more affordable housing for locals.

Galava · 12/03/2009 12:23

and what do YOU think Jux ?

Galava · 12/03/2009 12:48

Aah Sorry Jux .... just re-read your post of yesterday. I know what you think now !

A bit off topic but I just hate posts with a 'my DH thinks this....'

so what !

Anyway I am so glad you lot are not my neighbours

fwiw I think my 2nd home neighbours actually quite like us ... or at least to our faces they do ! Our home had been vacant for 4 years, (nobody local wanted to take it on.)They love the fact that it has come to life again with a new family.

A huge bonus is the new friendships I have made, in particular with one local lady.

I think Devon probably sucks tbh {wink]

Tell it like you see it, Galava!

I agree that the low cost homes should NOT be built in that village. Instead, the 2nd home owners should be forced to give their homes away to the locals on low incomes; that way they won't be subjected to the apparent indignity of having to live cheek by jowl with people less off than them.

stealthsquiggle · 12/03/2009 15:02

If this is in/on the outskirts of a reasonable sized village then the residents have no cause to object and are being entirely unreasonable IMO.

However, more generally, housing costs aside, living in idyllic rural areas is expensive. I would hate to live where we do if (for example) I couldn't afford a car - it would be a nightmare, and you would be limited, even with a bike, to one very expensive local shop - nearest 'low cost' shop is at least 10 miles away. There are a couple of houses in the village which have covenants attached that priority should be given to local people in need of somewhere to live - no prospective tenants who meet that requirement have ever come forward - young people or others on low incomes need to go where work is available and facilities are accessible - and that is not in the middle of (very beautiful) nowhere.

MrsMerryHenry · 12/03/2009 15:06

Stealthsquiggle, such a pity about the houses where you live. Maybe in the Devon village having lower cost accommodation might make cars, etc more easily affordable for the poorer locals?

Jux · 12/03/2009 21:05

Galava, for one thing my dh lives here in Devon with me so his take on 2nd home owners is as relevant as anyone else's here. For another thing, I thought it was quite funny and might amuse people. Sorry you found it such a trial.

This makes me cross too.The village I grew up in has no affordable housing. The only homes that get built are big 5-6 bedroom houses, that no one locally can afford.A little estate of new builds has just been completed,on the understanding that some of the homes would be 'affordable'.What we got was 2 x 5 beds,1 x 6 bed and 5 x 3 bed terraces, which are the 'affordable' ones. However at £259,00-£269,00,no one earning average wages around here could begin to afford one. They aren't selling to anyone though-the agents are desperately ringing locals who have viewed, trying to get them to buy.We are all sitting back, waiting for them to drop their prices to something which is reasonable.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 17/03/2009 11:53

Will these be HA homes rented to locals? Or will they be sold? Presumably if they are bought by locala those locals will nobly refuse to sell them in future as second homes - will they?

PortAndLemon · 17/03/2009 12:20

It says in the original link -- the houses are to be owned by a charitable trust and rented to locals.
