The end of the world is nigh!

How's the Landy?

SoupDragon · 09/03/2009 08:57

Ah, but did you notice that they were "Essential free range eggs" ?

LilyBolero · 09/03/2009 08:58

Waitrose have a policy of not using or selling any caged eggs.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 09:01

I've recently started shopping at Waitrose as I found that my weekly shop was coming out as the same as or cheaper than Tesco

And the staff are soooooooo helpful. I lurve Waitrose.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/03/2009 09:07

I heart Waitrose too

When I was pregnant and a massive Christmas line, they got me a glass of water, told me to go sit down and packed my groceries for me

Forgot something, and went into Tescos where someone ran over my foot with a trolley

SoupDragon · 09/03/2009 09:08

They have "price match" with Tesco's on branded good IIRC.

wrt the free range eggs - it's just nice that they haven't compromised on their principles just to cut costs. Unlike other Value ranges which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

HeadFairy · 09/03/2009 09:11

I love waitrose because when I had my first job there aged 16 I still got a profit share bonus, despite being the lowest of the lowly. Not many employers treat their staff so well. Worth paying a wee bit more IMO.

MitchyInge · 09/03/2009 09:13

landy is AMAZING! we must be approaching a full week with no breakdown or flat tyres - and I even got up to 75mph out of him on Saturday! my heart is sort of skipping about with joy! (or I might have overdosed on black coffee)

I have read that all these lines comply with their usual high welfare standards. Many are existing lines repackaged to highlight value. It had to happen and I am sure it will be welcomed.

Anyone near a Waitrose who can purchase and report back?

MitchyInge · 09/03/2009 09:15

me - but I'll stick an order in and have it delivered, don't want to tempt fate by breaking down on the way home with a truckload of value goods

HeadFairy · 09/03/2009 09:21

I'm off to waitrose in about ten mins, I need some basics so I'll let you know...

Owls · 09/03/2009 09:46

Am also off to Waitrose soon will have nosey.

at the thought of Mitchy being caught in possession of defrosting value goods.

ohdearwhatamess · 09/03/2009 09:56

I bought some value (or whatever they call them) grapes last week - they were inedible. And the value carrots went off within 24 hours.

I'll be sticking to the non-value ranges.

Sherbert37 · 09/03/2009 09:57

But they wouldn't have been Waitrose Value?!! This has just launched today.

WinkyWinkola · 09/03/2009 09:59

I love Waitrose too. It's the best supermarket and it's almost a pleasant shopping experience.

But I think your average punter who goes to Waitrose wouldn't be seen dead buying the value range.

I'll buy it though and test it and I'm sure less mobile pensioners will buy it too.

Waitrose and Asda are the best supermarkets. Tesco and Sainsbury's are terrible.

ohdearwhatamess · 09/03/2009 10:08

Said 'value' on the packaging. Was at the weekend.

Sherbert37 · 09/03/2009 10:11

Not good then - take them back? Don't expect they will want bad publicity at this stage.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 10:23

Are you sure they were from Waitrose? The new range is called "essentials" not "value".

CountessDracula · 09/03/2009 10:26

Ocado had them last week

ohdearwhatamess · 09/03/2009 10:39

To clarify, carrots definitely from Waitrose (Saturday), grapes Ocado (previous Wednesday). Both same range, same packaging.

Can't be sure what they were called - thought it was value but may well have imagined that. Could just as easily have been economy, essentials, everyday, or something else altogether on that theme. Very basic packaging, much cheaper than the usual ones.

IorekByrnison · 09/03/2009 11:26

My local Sainsburys has been playing background music recently. I think it is to give the impression of a more downmarket supermarket to fool us into believing that we are getting bargains so that we don't defect to Lidl.

happywomble · 09/03/2009 11:30

Gosh - I hope waitrose doesn't start playing music (unless classical). My mum refuses to go in M & S now as she can't stand their music.

Went to Waitrose this am and saw no sign of the value range..

IorekByrnison · 09/03/2009 11:38

Definitely not classical. Mostly 80's ballads, no doubt supposed to appeal to weak-minded middle-aged wifeys like me.

My local tube station on the other hand has started playing classical music. This is clearly meant to fool us into not noticing what a shit hole it is. It's all very annoying.

HeadFairy · 09/03/2009 12:03

No essentials range at Waitrose in Balham...

midnightexpress · 09/03/2009 12:09

No waitrose in Glasgow.
