A while back I posted something similar asking for a response to my brother who said that as "a hippy" I should not have more than two.

Someone suggested I tell him I'd killed a couple of people to make room for mine so it all evened out...made me chuckle...

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 18/02/2009 20:33

I dont think that larger children are really a bad thing.

Larger families typically share / hand down clothes / toys etc (I remember wearing clothes handed down from my sister, then handed down to another etc)

Larger families probably do take less long haul flights and possibly even short haul flights due to costs

On the flip to this, smaller families may have more disposable income to spend on the long haul flights and will possibly buy stuff and not have to hand it down, and throw away, thus increasing landfil.

Yes, larger families need more food but when the children grow older, there are more people contributing to the NSH and other services via tax and national insurance. If you think about the younger generation supporting their parents and grandparents with their contributions, if there are six children, their contibutions go further to their older generations.

I hate the must only have two mentality - even of people whose concern is not the environment, or benefits, or anything really, apart from nosiness.

Chatkins · 18/02/2009 20:34

Thanks slightlymadscotland, that is just the kind of info I was hoping for ! I was pretty sure I had read something along those lines once!

I have 3 dc and would love more. I bf, used washable nappies, grow own veg, don't drive, (though i am finally having lessons at 30!) and my dc wear hand-me-downs from my sisters lot. So I won't feel guilty either !!

Lilyloo · 18/02/2009 20:34

Lol at Sibh putting dd in the recycling bin!!!

dizzydixies · 18/02/2009 20:35

well said Elf well said

thank goodness for you, I was sitting here fretting which one of my 3 DC I was going to 'have to put back' [meep]

ScorpiowithabigS · 18/02/2009 20:36

good post elf

I'm not putting any of mine in the recycling! I would love more than 4dc; i have 3, want another, i know dh will say no more after that.

I have a dss too, so we will have 5.....

Sibh · 18/02/2009 20:36

I'm missing Masterchef to come back and retrieve my daughter from the imaginary bin and cuddle her. The guilt was too much

FAQinglovely · 18/02/2009 20:39

mind you Scorpio - I did have all 3 of mine while living on a working man's money........

perhaps I should have given a few away when we separated to ease the burden on the state .........oh and the environment

ScorpiowithabigS · 18/02/2009 20:41

you should have FAQ then your conscience would be at ease, lol

dizzydixies · 18/02/2009 20:42

does it count if my brother and best friend have both decided only to have one?

can I have their 'spares'?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 18/02/2009 20:43

I am from a large family, as is DH.

Just in "sibling" terms, me and DH have (his family and mine added together) a brother, two step brothers, three sisters and five step sisters.

My mum has five siblings, they're all married with children of at least two, mostly four, upper end of six children

I only have DD so far, but we plan on at least one more. I'd love to have three children, but not sure how the future will go.

ScorpiowithabigS · 18/02/2009 20:43

yes you can dizzy. My dsisters are yet to have children so i dont know if i have spares.

DH is an only though, so maybe i can have his spares??

ScorpiowithabigS · 18/02/2009 20:44

My grandad is 1 of 13.

Chatkins · 18/02/2009 20:46

Ooh I like the idea of having other peoples spares ! My brother has none, and they say they don't want any ever, so that gives me one or two, right ?

also know lots of people who only have one or two, loads of spares available !!

ScorpiowithabigS · 18/02/2009 20:50

you get 2 spares then

we hand down clothes, baby equipment, etc, to the others, toys, other people give us their toys, we recycle

LoveBuckets · 18/02/2009 20:50

Larger families are less likely to impulse buy shedloads of plastic crap or give into their children's every throwaway electronic gadget whim.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 18/02/2009 20:54

Another way of looking at it is that even if the parents of smaller families are responsible with money and dont buy tat that will fill in landfil, by increasing the children in a couple, it ensures that the GRANDPARENTS have more children to spread their spending on, so when I have another child, my mum will stop spending so lavishly on DD as she'll have two grandchildren to treat

5inthebed · 18/02/2009 20:59

My ds3 was actually conceived the same night me and DH decided that we wouldn't have anymore kids . I was drunk, and blame the wine He is 12 weeks now and is a stunner.

dizzydixies · 18/02/2009 21:09

my nephew, who is an only child, has more lego than one child could play with in a lifetime - my lot certainly don't have anywhere near as much crap stuff as him and there are 3 of mine

Lilyloo · 18/02/2009 21:18

ooh yes my sis never having any either so that gives me another 1 surely ?

Sibh too late to get a conscience now the damage is done

LoveBuckets · 18/02/2009 21:27

Is it true that parents of only one child feel guilty about them not having a playmate and overcompensate with toys, while parents of more feel guilty about not spending enough time with each child so compensate by coming on Mumsnet a lot?

Poledra · 18/02/2009 21:36

My bro's gay, so I can have his spares, is that right? It's just like carbon credits, then?
