Me too! I actually argued with DH about it last night

BitOfFun · 14/02/2009 19:35

Did we mix him up with a Kray then?

cocolepew · 14/02/2009 19:37

I was positive he'd been released from prison to die about 3 years ago.

Maybe I am think of a Kray

Mintyy · 14/02/2009 19:46

No, no, I didn't mix him up with a Kray.

I also thought he'd been let out to die a few years ago. Didn't he have several strokes? (sorry, not read article).

Gavlaar · 14/02/2009 19:47

should still be locked up

Gavlaar · 14/02/2009 19:47

oh ok, is still locked up

ZoeC · 14/02/2009 19:49

I remember his son trying this 2 or 3 years ago, he apparently hadn't long to live then and he wanted him to spend his last days at home.

Didn't agree then and I don't now, he evaded his sentence for so long really it's only due to that he isn't out at this age. Therefore this is of his own doing.

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 19:49

his son has been campaigning to get him out for years. it's mad really

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 19:49

oh how compassionate zoe

nickschick · 14/02/2009 19:51

But if hed have done any other robbery he would be free now its because it was a royal mail robbery.

Gavlaar · 14/02/2009 19:53

why do we need to be compassionate? the great train robbery wasn't just about stolen money, the train driver later died of his injuries. it was murder. ronnie biggs decided that he didn't have to serve his time, he's apparently above the law he should rot in jail.

and as zoeC said, if he'd done his time originally instead of nicking off to brazil he would've been out years ago.

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 19:54

what danger could he do now? murderes now get far less sentences.

Gavlaar · 14/02/2009 19:58

i do see what you are saying southeastastra, he is very old. and i do feel for his family.

it just seems that the whole great train robbery thing has been romanticised. they even made a film about it ffs! it was still a very serious crime!

and breath....

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 19:58

was also a long time ago. think the bloke just needs to be with his family

Gavlaar · 14/02/2009 20:08

i agree. it just annoys me that he escaped abroad and lived the life of riley for years.

but you're right, it was a long time ago.

did he live off the proceeds when he lived abroad?

yousaidit · 14/02/2009 20:37

he needs to be with his family? i think the traion driver who died would have liked a few more years with his....

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 20:59

oh hardline then.

what good can come of keeping him locked up?

better out for the good of his family

edam · 14/02/2009 21:00

They weren't charged with murder because the poor train driver took more than a year to die of his injuries. My father had to visit him (because of his job) and is firmly of the opinion that everyone forgets that Biggs et al are basically murderers who got away with it and were only sentenced for robbery.

If Biggs had served his time, that would be one thing. But he hasn't. He chose to run away, he spent decades sticking two fingers up to the criminal justice system, showing off about how he'd got away with hit, and only crawled back here when he needed the NHS.

Having said all that, he's an old, sick man (although clearly not as sick as his son claimed he was three years ago) so there are clearly potential grounds for compassionate release. But those who know a lot more about the details than me or any other observer have chosen not to release him - presumably they have good reasons.

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 21:03

in wonder what they are though? seems weird

SalmonintheLiffey · 14/02/2009 21:04

Why did he come back/??? That's the bit I don't get. I understand that britain his home and he was missing tea bags and the daily mail and rain macs but not that much surely?

southeastastra · 14/02/2009 21:34

he's ill, he wants to come home. wouldn't you?

loads of crims live abroad

nickschick · 14/02/2009 22:02

I think he came back bcos the standard of nhs healthcare is the best in the world and its available to all so even as a criminal in prison hes entitled to probably quicker treatment than us regular people.

edam · 14/02/2009 23:25

he came back because he was ill and he'd run out of money in Brazil.

Sorrento · 14/02/2009 23:46

No way should he be let out, what message would that send to would be criminals, at the age of 75 we can all go on the rampage cos we're old ? Actually that could be a plan

PortofinosDHwillDieIfHeForgets · 14/02/2009 23:58

As Edam says - he ran away. He hasn't done his time. Now it is tough shit.
