She won't be BF then lol

Glad they're all well

spicemonster · 27/01/2009 07:42

I heard this on the radio and thought that she's going to win hands down those 'twins are harder than singles' rows there are on here

There was one they didn't know about too!

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 27/01/2009 07:55
  • eight! Was the lady on some kind of fertility drug or was it a nature thing.... I would pass out if i was told i was having twins let alone 8 - in fact right now i would pass out if i was told i was having one
atowncalledalice · 27/01/2009 08:00

I read that as "US woman gives birth to octopus".

and she says she will be bf them all......

Egg · 27/01/2009 08:26

Suddenly my DTs seem easy...

plj · 27/01/2009 08:43

I will NEVER complain about finding it hard with my DT's either!

belgo · 27/01/2009 08:46

It's so funny that they thought there were 'only' 7 babies, and there turned out to be eight! Just shows, even with these technical scans, they can't see everything!

I hope they all do well.

helena99 · 27/01/2009 08:47

Do you think that she will be making an appearance on the baby-naming threads?

Cies · 27/01/2009 08:55

Wow.

Let's hope they all do well and can leave the hospital soon. And good luck to her.

belgo · 27/01/2009 08:56

I'm sure there was a baby-name thread asking opinions on the name 'Octavia'

MrsJamin · 27/01/2009 08:56

rofl @ atowncalledalice. Where was the eighth hiding, that's what I want to know. I think she might be making an appearance on the sleep and bfing threads too!

seriously, how can you afford to have 8 at the same time? I remember those sextuplets who must be young women by now, the media interest and yearly tv programmes must have helped financially, yet this lady is being anonymous. perhaps she'll appear on oprah in a few months time!

I am with atowncalledalice. I read it as octopus too.
Which is really sad as it makes the notion of eight babies not really so exciting in comparison.
An octopus - that really is wow !

skay · 27/01/2009 10:03

Belgo - Rofl.

this should never have been allowed to happen.

Of course it's good that the babies have all survived and are all doing well.

But allowing people to have the kind of fertility treatment that enables them to conceive this many babies is wrong on every level.

Presumably this woman will have had treatment because she was desparate to conceive. She was lucky, for most women who fall pregnant with this many babies they are delivered very prematurely and the women get to watch their longed-for babies die one by one. It is extremely rare for multiple pregnancies like this to survive - fgs even a twin pregnancy is considered high risk for mother and babies.

using fertility treatment in this way is just completely irresponsible IMO.

tittybangbang · 27/01/2009 10:32

I've been getting over excited about this story all morning.

That woman's body is a wonder to carry all those babies for 30 weeks. Can you imagine the size of her bump? The babies must have weighed .... oooh, about 18lbs at least in total, PLUS placentas and amniotic fluid. Her uterus must have been as big as a pillow case.

As for her bf all the babies - well, I practically cried when I heard that. Good for her! Hope she has teams of lactation consultants working with her and lots of milk donors on standby. I think it's amazing that she's telling the press that this is something she wants to do for her babies - it really raises the profile of breastfeeding in a great way.

Hope we get to see some pictures of the babies.

KayHarkerIsNotAnAuthority · 27/01/2009 12:02

Absolutely wonderful! Hope she has lots of good support. Lovely to hear some totally good news.

boogeek · 27/01/2009 12:52

I am amazed to hear there were 18 doctors at the birth - what on earth were they all doing? (Gawping in wonder, I suppose.)

SoupDragon · 27/01/2009 12:52

There would have been at least one per baby.

belgo · 27/01/2009 12:54

two doctors per baby (one junior, one senior), two for the mother, and nurses and midwives as well. All nine patients would need a lot of care, and of course it's a good learning opporutunity for more junior doctors.

PlainOldPeachy · 27/01/2009 13:01

Wannabe it depends on how it happened- if that many embryos were implanted then completely agree, but if it were a fluke of nature or as I have read in the past about a women's body reacting unexpectedly 'well' to usual doses of fertiltiy drugs and releasing many eggs- if that were the case then it comes down to a women's choice I think re embryonic reduction intervention.

Would be interesting to know what did cause it, but as longa s they're all OK then good luck to her and wow!

LouMacca · 27/01/2009 13:19

Yes will be interesting to see how she became pg with 8 babies. In the USA a woman having IVF can have as many embryos implanted as she likes (and is then offered selective reduction if high risk multiples!) this is madness.

Happy that all the babies seem to be doing well. Good Luck to them. Look forward to seeing the photos.
