What's the best Sunday paper?

beforesunrise · 26/01/2009 10:39

entirely subjective I know, but while I am a faithful Guardian reader and I love their Saturday paper, I am really fed up with the Observer, I find the quality of the writing especially in the supplements is very poor, the articles are boring and repetitive and I am just fed up with reading about the environment every single Sunday.

So what do you think would be a good alternative for me?

Independent? Though they too are very hot on green issues. Times would be my third choice.

lalalonglegs · 26/01/2009 10:43

Indy on Sunday - more out of charity than actual enjoyment.

McDreamy · 26/01/2009 10:43

We are about to get the Times delivered every Sunday.

Buda · 26/01/2009 10:44

The Mail on Sunday.

SlartyBartFast · 26/01/2009 10:44

i like the independant, initially because it was only a small paper, but that too is now full of gunk.
but that would be my paper of choice.

thequietone · 26/01/2009 10:45

Sunday Sport

bamboo · 26/01/2009 10:46

I'm fed up with the Observer too - nearly fell over at the price yesterday. But dh likes it . I wonder whether they are re-jigging the magazine though as there are a few columns that were finishing yesterday. Hate Observer Woman with a passion too.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 26/01/2009 10:51

The Knobserver is the best of a bad lot IMO. We used to get the Torygraph and the Times as well, Torygraph better than Times if you can stand the leftiebashing tone.
Sindie is a shadow of its former self and judging by its circulation figures is unlikely to survive much longer anyway.
The Mail on Sunday is a joke. We get it every week because we have to, but it doesn't actually count as a newspaper, being as it doesn't ever contain anything in the way of actual news.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 26/01/2009 10:52

Yes, bamboo, I was wondering that too. Also the Saturday Guardian magazine.

Almeida · 26/01/2009 10:53

Read on the internet - much better as don't have loads of newspaper filled with sport etc

SlartyBartFast · 26/01/2009 10:54

i dont have time, i tend to read the saturday guardian on a sunday morning.
i am tempted in a money saving exercise to read the papers online but it is just not the same.

happywomble · 26/01/2009 10:55

I find them all disappointing so tend to read the Sunday papers online now!

I like to buy a Saturday paper and like the Telegraph or the Guardian as both have good news sections and travel supplements etc. (different political viewpoints I know!)

I used to like the Independent on Saturday for the prize Sudoku and 50 best supplement but found there was little to read in the main paper.

snowleopard · 26/01/2009 10:56

I am bored with the Blobserver too. I have actually had to admit to myself that I prefer the Sunday Times.

snowleopard · 26/01/2009 10:58

I actually find journalism about green issues teeth-gnashingly boring. I do make an effort to be green and I know what I'm meant to do - I do not want to read lifestyle articles about it every time I look at a paper.

starbear · 26/01/2009 11:03

Saturday Times for me. Observer out of habit.

BlaDeBla · 26/01/2009 11:28

You could try the FT for weekend news and the Sunday Sport for alien abductions

Tiggiwinkle · 26/01/2009 11:31

Sunday Times here. Have the Times and the Guardian on Saturday, but like you find the Observer boring.

beanieb · 26/01/2009 11:34

Observer. Can't stand the independent.

janeite · 26/01/2009 11:41

We have The Observer but I don't like it much. The holiday section never contains anything that I could afford, Nigel's foodie stuff always seems to contain meat or spinach, neither of which I like and I loathe Polly Vernon to the point of fury.

I read The Sunday Times online, as I don't think it's worth the cost.

Would never, ever contemplate The Mail On Sunday.

Metella · 26/01/2009 11:47

The Observer is hopeless. I buy the Guardian (occasionally the Times) during the week but bought the Sunday Times recently for the book tokens and quite enjoyed it. It's not as good as the Times but more tolerable than the Boreserver or the Indie (which sends me to sleep). Plus it's not as hideously rightwing as the Torygraph.

MauriceDancer · 26/01/2009 11:51

we get the times, they've recently revamped the mags and are using a lot of american buy-ins, whcih i like actually as am a big Vanity Fair/US mag fan. used to get the nobserver too but polly bloody vernon saw us off.

LazyLinePainterJane · 26/01/2009 12:07

We switched from the Saturday Guardian as found the supplements toss. Do miss a couple of bots but not enough to justify the cost> Started getting the Times instead but can't find a decent sunday paper that I like enough.

plumandolive · 26/01/2009 13:16

I really agree- am getting fed up with the Observer too, but dh likes it.
We get the Indy too. I like the indy- I like their politics - Robert Fisk is superb.

Metella-we may swap for the Sunday Times too, although I don't know..... I know it's not the torygraph, but there's something very "establishment" about it, which i can't quite get my finger on- the assumption that everyone has a particular set of values.
But I suppose they all do that anyway.

devilsavacado · 26/01/2009 13:19

Saturday Times for me,love the jumbo crossword, magazine and body and soul section.

Lilymaid · 26/01/2009 13:23

I buy the Saturday Telegraph - although it is very far from my political leanings, the content is reasonably interesting - travel, motoring, finance, arts etc. I then look on the Internet to see if there is anything worth reading in other papers on Saturday and Sunday.
