stamp duty increased ???? SHIT ! What to ?

Gwenick · 16/03/2005 13:25

they've double the amount to start at £120,000

OP posts:
Gwenick · 16/03/2005 13:25

sorry meant increased the threshold not increased stamp duty

NomDePlume · 16/03/2005 13:26

That's reasonable, afterall you can't buy anything for £60k anymore.

vict17 · 16/03/2005 13:27

that's a lot!! looks like we'll have to drink cider, sparkling wine and spirits

CountessDracula · 16/03/2005 13:27

From next month, there will be £2,000 return to work bonuses available to single parents

Fimbo · 16/03/2005 13:28

Its not increased. The threshold has been increased from 60k to 120k. Should help first time buyers.

Fimbo · 16/03/2005 13:29

oops to late!!

Gwenick · 16/03/2005 13:29

fimbo - see my 1.25 post - was in too much of a rush to be first to post on it

Caligula · 16/03/2005 13:32

Hmmm - £2000 eh? I might have to give up work, just so that I can go back again and get £2000! (Don't suppose it works like that though!)

Gwenick · 16/03/2005 13:35

and of course the £2000 starting next month isn't trying to win votes or anything

MrsDoolittle · 16/03/2005 13:58

NomDePlume - No it's not reasonable, you can't buy anything for £120K anymore either!!

Janh · 16/03/2005 14:08

"Child benefit to rise to a maximum of £63 for the first child and £111 for two children"

a week? (joke)

How much is it now?

Janh · 16/03/2005 14:09

You can here, Mrs D Nothing big but quite a few little ones.

gingerbear · 16/03/2005 14:16

janh, I was confused about the child benefit figures too.
1st child currently gets £16.50/week, going up to £17.00/week in April (have just had a letter)
haven't got another child, so don't know about other children CB

noddyholder · 16/03/2005 14:33

is that child benefit figure right?I get 16.50 now so seems a huge leap

beatie · 16/03/2005 14:35

They haven't moved the 3% stamp duty threshold up from £250,000 though have they. Whilst I have every sympathy with first time buyers, house prices have rocketed for everyone.

Many families are having to take on massive mortgages and pay over £250,000 for their second home if they want it to be big enough for a family of two kids and near decent schools. (That's in the South East) We're not talking mansions.

And the inheritance tax threshold is being increased by a snippet. It won't make a difference to many people at all. I wish they wouldn't bother rather than giving us these token gestures.

TinyGang · 16/03/2005 14:41

Agree with you beatie - you make good points very relevant to our own situation on both the stamp duty and inheritance front

donnie · 16/03/2005 14:48

awful about the wine though. We'll just have to drink meths instead Gwenick!

TinyGang · 16/03/2005 14:51

Oh, the wine is most definately the worst bit of news!

NomDePlume · 16/03/2005 14:51

They should move the 3% S.D. threshold up, I agree. Of course that has nothing to do with the fact that the 3% SD is capping the value/saleability of my house at the mo, a house which we hope to be putting on the market on 12 weeks time....

alicatsg · 16/03/2005 15:06

so does the child benefit rise cancel out the wine rise I wonder???

Gwenick · 16/03/2005 15:10

that's a good point ali - might just equal things out
