They've bloody gone and done it again!!!!

Article in support of strippers:

FFS

This leads on from my previous thread here where a man wrote in defence of his use of prostitutes.

There has been no converse/balancing view presented in either case.

I admit I didn't get it together to complain last time but this is taking the piss now. They did not publish a single letter giving an opposing point of view to what "sapphire" wrote. And this paper is read by thousands of schoolchildren every day.

So I have turned into "digusted of tunbridge wells" and complained to the paper, the PCC, and copied to Polly Toynbee (as recommended by tonton - thank you) and The Fawcett Society.

The gist of my complaint was that "Basically thelondonpaper has now run two pieces in it's "columnist" section in support of the sex industry, with no balacing views published at all. The reason that this concerns me is that this is a free paper read by thousands of schoolchildren every day, and the idea that they are having a message fed to them by this paper that the sex industry is a wholly positive thing is disturbing."

Come and tell me I've done the right thing. Feel free to complain too if you want!

I am very interested to see what (if any) responses I get to my emails...

Is the "article" not a wind up? Do care homes really invite strippers in to entertain residents? . pmsl at I "inspired one man to speak more words that evening than he had in several years".

Also wonder how firmly established a 21yo's career in financial journaslism would be and why she found it so exploitative.

solidgoldbrass · 12/11/2008 18:15

Well I resent some silly mare telling me and various friends that we are 'suffering from false consciousness' ie lying, deluded or mentally ill - which is how most sex workers are usually described by the anti-sex strand of feminism.

scaredoflove · 12/11/2008 18:24

I am more concerned that my daughters and sons are constantlt exposed to size 0, stick insects on a daily basis, with no talent as the norm than them knowing that stripclubs exist and some people are happy working in them

lalalonglegs · 12/11/2008 18:27

I don't think most feminism is anti-sex but it is anti-sexual exploitation and treating women as solely objects for men's sexual gratification - it's hard to argue that stripping falls outside that.

scaredoflove · 12/11/2008 18:32

What about the chippendales or similar?

We are allowed to be against more than one thing at a time but I personally think thinness/famous for nothing is more damaging to our girls and boys than stripclubs, which is what was being discussed by the OP

lalalonglegs · 12/11/2008 18:40

Do you really equate the Chippendales with lap-dancing? {hmm}

scaredoflove · 12/11/2008 18:45

I do actually, people getting their kit off to music for the enjoyment of others

Sometimes the shows and clubs are glitzy, some are grimey, some tame, some more hardcore - male or female stripshows, I don't see the difference

lalalonglegs · 12/11/2008 19:23

So you don't see any difference between a troupe of men performing high camp routines in front of a group of women for their entertainment and individual women being picked out and directed by men to dance for their sexual gratification? I think both forms of "enjoyment" are essentially undignified for the performers by the way but at least the men don't have to spend the evening chatting up, ahem, clients and faking some sort of attraction to them.

scaredoflove · 12/11/2008 19:28

some male shows do just the same

and I am entitled to my opinion, as you are yours, no need to be so patronising

I don't see how challenging you is patronising you but if you don't want to be patronised, try arguing your point. I must confess, however, I was confusing you with the person who posted saying that she resented being told lap-dancing was anti-feminist.

solidgoldbrass · 12/11/2008 22:29

Sheila Jeffries (author of the book in the above link) is and has been for most of her professional life apocalyptically anti-sex. She wouldn't know a balanced argument or a fact if it bit her on the clitoris.

I have no problem with her books being published. I have at least one of them (Anticlimax). It's fucking hilarious.
I am not offering to bite her or anyone else on the clitoris. Do you not do metaphors?

hellymelly · 12/11/2008 22:52

Well I'm with you chukkypig.Article was rather funny in fact,Lordy how does a stripper entertain blind clients, does she keep up a running commentary ?"I'm taking my bra off now boys, can you hear the ping?"
I don't get how the sex industry has become so acceptable to women, but then I am old enough to revere Andrea Dworkin.

solidgoldbrass · 12/11/2008 23:11

Dittany 'wouldn't know a fact if it bit her on the clitoris' is not threatening. It's not even in the same category of rudeness as 'all she needs is a good shag'. Which is not something I would say about Sheila Jeffries who has argued very eloquently about not needing any such thing. A nice cup of get-over-yourself is what I would prescribe for her.

scaredoflove · 12/11/2008 23:17

I'm sitting on my hands

Really want to comment on the biting but don't want to be accused of being personal

SGB I like your metaphor

Dittany: I might just as easily suggest that the Pope wouldn;t know a metaphor if it bit him on his bell-end. Or his scrotum. In fact I frequently do suggest things like that, and if I am more gender specific than 'ringpiece' or 'nose' it just depends what kind of mood I am in. I am most definitely an equal-opportunity insult-hurler.

Dittany, I am sure I have suggested at least kicking one poster's friend's cock off by now, let alone administering a few chilli sauce enemas. And nailing bollocks to the ceiling. 'Kick her in the fanjo' is a not-that-uncommon MN suggestion (which is not, of course, made in the spirit of a genuine incitement to assault).
But in future I will respectfully suggest that Sheila Jeffries wouldn't know a rational argument if it pinched her dinner money and shat on her head.
