Short of a MAJOR voting scandal, you are making lots of people in this small island across the pond* very happy

  • and fewer people in your huge neighbour to the north (as my Canadian in laws and husband's extended family will testify!)

Amazing speech! am listening with tears rolling down my cheeks.

Well done!

mabanana · 05/11/2008 08:34

look at the map - the old joke that America is clever at each end and much much thicker in the middle is proved yet again! While moronic inbreds turn out for warmonger McCain, the East and West coasts did the world proud!
That poor man now has such a terrible job, after Bush and his cronies have trashed the world economy and send all those kids to war. I hope he can achieve what we hope he can.

brimfull · 05/11/2008 08:35

a very emotional day

congrats america!!!

needmorecoffee · 05/11/2008 08:40

no more Bush and Cheneye whoooooooooooohooooooooooo
Poor man is now lumbered with the largest national debt in history for which the repugs will be blaming him for.

Elffriend · 05/11/2008 08:44

worth a good sob

and I'm usually a cynic about politics and politicians..

Elffriend · 05/11/2008 08:48

"Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Welcome back from the Axis of Evil USA!

shabster · 05/11/2008 08:57

Thanks for the link Elf....oh my word I was just 7 years old when my dad made me watch that on a tiny black and white tv we had. My dad was a union leader, ex miner and Labour supporter through and through. He still is passionate in his beliefs at 76 years of age. He adored MLKing. I thought I was much older.

Will show that to my 11 yr old when he comes home from High School tonight.

theSuburbanDryad · 05/11/2008 08:58

And...OH MY GOD!! When was expat's baby born??

notyummy · 05/11/2008 09:00

Just posted on the other thread; am also over emotional and keep getting teary. His victory speech was amazing and I am so delighted he won. Seeing Jesse Jackson in floods was tears was profoundly moving.

I am not American; I am not black, but I am delighted and excited.

Elffriend · 05/11/2008 09:00

Yes, I miseed that - congratulations ExPat!!

Waltzywotzy · 05/11/2008 09:01

A memorable day in our lifetimes

pagwatch · 05/11/2008 09:09

as a woman on the radio said last night...
I am so happy that my 6 year old will grow up thinking that America having a black President is absolutely no big deal.

what a fab start to the day. Couldn't quite believe it tbh

kingprawntikka · 05/11/2008 09:10

Fantastic result, stayed up til 4 am to be sure , didn't quite believe it would happen.

DaddyJ · 05/11/2008 09:13

Yes we (well, they..) fucking can!
Or the Muslim version: Barack Mubarak!!

I have always had a lot of respect for John McCain and the way he accepted defeat
showed again what a statesman and a gentleman he is.

After 8 years of W, though, it really is time for change.

I am happy and full of hope but Prez Obama has got his work cut out,
that's for sure. Fingers crossed.

cyteen · 05/11/2008 09:18

So happy There were a few tears shed in our house this morning - what an amazing moment in history, and how shocking that it took so long to arrive.

I thought McCain was quite gracious too, unlike his supporters who started booing when it became evident he was announcing his concession.

Go Barack!

I enjoyed seeing the tears of defeat in Sarah Palin's eyes too! I hope this drives a stake through her heart and we never haer from her again. I worry that may be too optimistic, however.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/11/2008 09:37

yay !!!!!!!!!!!!

StretchMarkCatherineWheelQueen · 05/11/2008 09:38

Yaaaaaaaaaay!!!

lavenderbongo · 05/11/2008 09:49

I am glad I am not the only one who shed a few tears this morning.
This has restored my faith in human nature - well done America!

I have been trying to explain to my 4 year old why the world has changed today and why mummy and daddy where glued to the tv this morning. I am not convinced she understood.

I am feeling a bit sorry for McCain - i think he probably entered politics for the right idealistic reasons but has been used and manipulated and never really stood a chance once he chose Sarah Palin. He looked like a statesman last night - but not a patch on Obama whose acceptance speech made tears come to my eyes. Brilliant.

An historic day.

differentGuyD · 05/11/2008 09:54

hip hip hooray!
At last, bloody sensible voting!
After 8 years of Dubya not only is there a lot to change but almost as much to repair.

I wonder if McCain realises how much he damaged his chances by choosing SP as his running mate?

CatIsSleepy · 05/11/2008 10:06

can I just say

utterly utterly wonderful

am not ashamed to say i blubbed when I heard the result on the radio this morning

well done America!
a real victory for intelligence
and a bit of hope for the world at last

he's got a tough job to do, good luck to him
