Heard this on R4 just now and it makes me so angry. Who thinks that gang-rape is adultery fgs? It sums up Africa to me right now - the ignorance and superstition of men with aids raping babies in SA, the vile things done to women and children in the Congo, why is Africa so lost? How can the mysogynist fuckheads that are Islamic extremist hold such power over these people?

icant bring myself to read it

2shoeshissbangwhoosh · 04/11/2008 08:21

omg that is so sick
poor child

theSuburbanDryad · 04/11/2008 08:21

You do realise that Britain and American will never go over there with a military force though, don't you? Because there's no oil there...

stitch · 04/11/2008 08:24

people like that deserve a special subsection of hell to burn in forever and ever.
i cant bring myself to read that. but i am glad she has died. i'm certain that it is preferable to the life she wouldhave had to look forward to.

Callisto · 04/11/2008 08:30

The UK and US are over-extended as it is and even if they wern't then the Congo would be the priority. But education is the key to this - it is in the extremeists interests the world over to keep 'their' people in ignorance and fear.

I had to turn R4 off when they were reporting it as I didn't want DD to listen to it.

jesus i am sick of reading these stories. what can we do??

Callisto · 04/11/2008 08:36

I wish I knew - give money to Amnesty, lobby our MP's?

i hoope the spectators go that same section of hell
but, it is heartening toknow that some people tried to save her. and her father was trying to get justice for her for the rape. poor man. he must be broken.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 04/11/2008 08:41

Appalling story - but I'm not sure of the link you're trying to make with Sharia Law/Islamic Extremists in African Islamic Countries (and other Islamic countries around the world - including our own) and what is happening in the Congo, SA and other parts of Africa

Callisto · 04/11/2008 08:55

I didn't intend to make a link between SA and Congo and Islamic extremists so apologies if it read that way. I know that there are many more evils in the world than just Islamic extremists, but they are the reason this child was stoned to death in Somalia, and this goes on in other countries that are poor and with a population that is uneducated. If that is any clearer...

This makes me so bloody angry. It's just outrageous. You know that biblical quotation about crimes crying out to heaven for vengeance...? Well, that's what I think this stoning is.

WayneAteASlob · 04/11/2008 09:10

That is fucking disgusting (don't normally swear on here but will make an exception this time)

The even sadder thing is that I don't think this is necessarily an isolated event....

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 04/11/2008 09:17

Yes I see a little clearer what you mean.

However, just 2yrs ago in the UK 1 in 10 British Asians believed that "honour killings" could be justified and currently "officialy" there are about 12 honour killings in the UK each year (although it's believed to be much higher figurer than that) and there approx 500 cases each year relating to forced marriage (rape, assault, forced inprisonment etc) as well.

So sadly this is not just a "poor" countries issue. It's happening right on our own doorstep.

And Sharia Law (although thankfully not seen to the extremes in the article in the OP) is very much alive and well in the UK and has been since 1982!!! here

Spidermama · 04/11/2008 09:20

This shouldn't be on a thread title. I was feeling low enough today and I really wish this hadn't been so forcibly brought to my attention.

I hope this won't be bumping all day. There's nothing any of us can do so why spread the pain?

Talia22 · 04/11/2008 09:27

We are doing something simply by discussing it here.

This story was squeezed into literally the last page, bottom corner of the Sunday Times this week. I considered starting a thread about it, but decided not to as I get so worked up about it.

The Sharia court angle is very important. We might not be able to stop what is happening abroad but we should fight tooth and nail to protect our Asian sisters here against the male "justice" carried out on their behalf.

TBH, my heart sank when I saw Gordon Brown in Saudi recently shaking hands with various members of the ruling elite in return for financial aid. What price will we pay for this in the future?

LouMacca · 04/11/2008 09:28

This has made me feel sick. What a sick world we live in. Certainly puts my problems into perspective. Poor child

Talia22 · 04/11/2008 09:28

Totally disagree with you Spidermama.

stitch · 04/11/2008 09:28

guy, i am a british asian, and not a single person of my acquaintnace, whether here in england, or in pakistan, thinkgs honour killings are anything other than murder.
and i' sure i know more than 8 people.
i dot know where those statistics come from

southeastalien · 04/11/2008 09:29

you can hide it

i remember the other girl's case a while back, she had a web page dedicated to stopping this. i will try to find it later.

don't think we can just ignore it

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 04/11/2008 09:39

stitch the stat comes from this article.

Admittedly a small number that were interviewed but never the less 50 did say that.

in 2001 there were 2.3 million British Asians - and I would be very impressed if you knew a 10th of them .

People with extreme views exist in all races and religions, so please don't think that I'm somehow trying to attack Asians in the UK (or anywhere else for that matter).

There have been some horrific crimes in the news recently by people with radical views all of their own

stitch · 04/11/2008 09:47

that article just makes me soo mad.
a persons ohnour is NOT tied up in theri property or their women, or any of that medieval crap. sorry, i shouldnt diss the medievals like that.
i am jsut soo angry about this. (not you guy)

Notquitegrownup · 04/11/2008 09:48

Horrific, horrific story.

Has anyone else read "My enlightenment" by Ayaan Ali Hirshi? I found this book fascinating and surprisingly easy to read. Although the author becomes an activist against Islamic extremism particularly in its attitude to women, I also found the early chapters in which she tries to live within Islamic society equally fascinating.

By the way, SuburbanD America did try to take military aid to Somalia, in the 1980s, with somewhat unfortunate results. (Don't often find myself standing up for the Americans!)

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 04/11/2008 09:51

actually - I must correct part of my last post (as I sat cuddling DS3 I realised I'd made a statistical error) - the 1 in 10 figure was among younger Asians (interestingly the article I found - which I can no longer find to link to ) said it was from all faiths and so wasn't specifically younger Muslims.

  • So 1/10th of 2.3 million British Asians isn't actually the figure that it suggests feel that honour crimes as justifable - it would be a much smaller number.
stitch · 04/11/2008 09:53

guy, that is something i find scary too. it is the yonger ones who are far far more extremist. whatever the religion. not the older ones.
