Heard this on R4 just now and it makes me so angry. Who thinks that gang-rape is adultery fgs? It sums up Africa to me right now - the ignorance and superstition of men with aids raping babies in SA, the vile things done to women and children in the Congo, why is Africa so lost? How can the mysogynist fuckheads that are Islamic extremist hold such power over these people?

It is a theatre / arts education / community organisation that is a registered charity by virtue of our education and young pople's work

Not one of the front line 'relief' charities.

mamadiva · 05/11/2008 12:08

That sounds really good though its the little community orgs that pave the way for the bigger ones

Anyway am going to link this story to friends and family as I think it is shocking it has so little coverage when it should be such a big story!

Kind of makes you realise I know the presidential thing is a big deal but surely these issues should be publicised alongside it as Id be interested to hear what Barack Obama's stance would be on these things and if their is anything that we could do as a united nation.

MilaMae · 05/11/2008 14:10

OMG how totally and utterly awful, I just can't believe it, I just feel so angry and sickened. Normally I hate horrible threads and avoid them but for some reason I feel it was important for me to read this one. Can't explain why so don't jump on me.

Will hug dd extra tight tonight

pigleto · 05/11/2008 14:24

I worry that this is one of those stories like the babies being thrown out of incubators in kuwait. It is just so emotive and hard to verify. I wish I trusted the media more.

Talia22 · 05/11/2008 14:32

pigleto, if anything I think these types of cases are under reported. I've certainly read similar reports before, with mobile phone evidence. We don't really want to believe it because it's so vile.

souroldtrout · 05/11/2008 14:33

Do you really think that pigleto? It's being reported on Al Jazeera as well as every major news channel. It sounds horribly likely to be true.

I so agree that you should have posted this Callisto ... and mostly I lurk and don't post ...

southeastastralfireworks · 05/11/2008 14:38

here is the thread i posted last year in case anyone is interested.

pigleto · 05/11/2008 14:38

I am just sceptical about horror stories about muslims. But it does seem that when it comes to Somalia no horror is too dreadful to be true.

myredcardigan · 05/11/2008 14:50

Poor, poor girl.
I'm just as enraged by the lack of reporting on this than I am by this horrific act itself.

I wonder what would happen if we all emailed the BBC to complain over their lack of coverage when so much air time was given over to the RB/JR nonsense. I may just email them!

Suedonim · 05/11/2008 15:30

I heard about this a few days ago, through local sources (I live in Nigeria) and was almost sick. It's awful it's taken so long to filter through to the world's press. I don't give a jot about about religion or otherwise, I just cannot believe that people don't see others for the human beings they are.

ForeverOptimistic, I don't think you're rambling at all. Maybe we need some sort of Campaigns section on MN, where we could find details of petitions. That thread last week about the fur trade in China was god-awful too, and worth raising awareness of. I guess MN Towers would need to police such a section so we didn't get cranks taking advantage, though.

Talia22 · 05/11/2008 21:34

That was the case I was referring to southeast. It gave me sleepness nights at the time.

southeastastralfireworks · 05/11/2008 22:14

talia, me too. was sick that it was being filmed and posted everywhere.

how much longer will we be posting these stories i wonder.

southeastern, and the poor girl was stripped from the waist down before the mob started hurling their rocks at her.

stewie, yes I heard about that too. It sounds as though certain types are targeting these charities to exploit vulnerable people. Not sure what, if anything, has been done about it.

Callisto · 06/11/2008 08:24

StewieGriffin - I can't defend our troops about Bosnia and Serbia because I don't remember the full story, but there are no British troops in the Congo. The army consists mainly of Indian troops I believe and certainly no British troops have been involved in the child abuse scandal recently. I think you should produce some evidence before accusing British troops of atrocities - lots of MNers are army themselves.

Talia22 · 06/11/2008 09:28

Callisto, yes I had heard about this in relation to charity aid work rather than troops.

Callisto · 06/11/2008 09:37

But there is a big difference between NGO workers and peacekeeping troops surely? And I thought that the workers were not British who were involved?

FairLadyRantALot · 06/11/2008 10:18

What a truely shocking story, OP....poor girl and poor family! Things like this should not be happening!

Suburban....my dh was in the army for 24 years and I resent people saying, oh but no one will go there and there because there is no oil....believe me, my dh was in many places, Sierra Leone being one of them....!Maybe people should get their facts straight...

Spidermama....attitudes like yours are shocking....oh, lets not look and it will go away, or something like that....it doesn't work that way!Or, oh spare me, I can't deal with this....well, sadly this sort of thing is reality, close up and personal, for many people....bet they wish they could just "opt out"!

Lovesdogsandcats · 06/11/2008 12:05

thais right spidermama close your mind to what is happening.

This is utterly horrific.
I cannot believe there are human beings capable of doing and watching something so absolutely inhuman.

Really upset

Didn't mean to upset you - just asking for clarification. Your first statement wasn't terribly clear about who was guilty of what. I am aware that the 'peacekeepers' as well as NGO workers in the Congo and elsewhere have been accused of child abuse etc, however I find it helpful to provide the evidence myself to back up allegations that I make rather than expecting other people to do it for me.

'Commanding officers from Britain, US, and Canada were caught in the rape/ death camps in Serbia and Bosnia'

Are you sure about this? And what exactly do you mean--that they were raping and killing?

It doesn't seem to be well-documented at all because I've been to both websites and googled and found absolutely nothing to suggest that British commanding officers were involved in rape in camps in Serbia (where British troops weren't operating) and Bosnia.

Surely such serious allegations would have had some media coverage?

Not doubting you, just a little puzzled.

Bride1 · 06/11/2008 19:11

And I'm entirely ready to put my hands up and say I was wrong if I have just not googled or checked the websites carefully enough.
