Who on earth could think www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3126602/TK-Maxx-sold-jackets-with-knifes-attached.html this was a good idea

I saw that on Yahoo too.

Soapbox · 03/10/2008 13:44

I know I shouldn't laugh but really shouldn't the tele journalists be better trained!

'Last year a TK Maxx shop assistant was stabbed to death 11 times at a store in Thurmaston, Leicestershire. '

Luckier than a cat with nine lives, wouldn't you say

AnAngelWithin · 03/10/2008 13:44

omg thats awful!

Megglevache · 03/10/2008 13:46

They didn't show the woman being interviewed in Farnborough this morning who asked "Can I do potatoes with it?" Then saying "ahem no no it's really bad isn't it"

FAQ · 03/10/2008 13:46

oh god soapy - I shouldn't laugh either as it's awful that he was killed - but even I (a total non-pedant) see the grammatical error there

What buyer thought those jackets were a good idea.......and more to the point what manufacturer?!?!?!?

TheArmadillo · 03/10/2008 13:48

I think the article is being a bit misleading.

a) the jacket (of swiss make) contained a swiss army knife - these are not illegal - probably not so in switzerland where I assume TK Maxx got them from.

b) it was a penknife - of which many are sold everyday, and many people carry them (I do as does dp)

c) if a 36 yo man brought one I assume it was an adults coat not a child's.

d) selling a penknife is not promoting knife crime - glamourising that knife and saying 'here go stab someone' is, but not the mere act of selling a well know brand of penknife of which millions are sold every year.

While knife crime is a worry, and while TKMaxx should have realised the knife was in there and sold them with a 18 rating and a warning - slightly misguided, but not horrendous.

Steak knives, bread knives, paring knives, - all far easier to get hold of, most people have them lying around in their homes etc but I don't see people getting worked up about them.

onager · 03/10/2008 13:52

Agree with TheArmadillo and they have withdrawn them now anyway.
Don't scouts have to have a penknife like that? with an attachement to get stones from horses hooves etc

Lilyloo · 03/10/2008 13:53

TBH i think it's the fact that it's built into a jacket that's the issue!
I personally do think it's horrendous and very different to easy access of knives in general.

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 03/10/2008 13:56

why?

how does one type of knife differ from another in it's potential danger?

If you are going to have a problem with one knife then why not it all?

How many catalogue things come with a free set of steak knives.

Knives are in every home. Big ones, serated ones, ones you could just grab on your way out the house, ones you could stab someone with in your own house.

Knives are easily accesible by every member of society. Why get worked up by a penknife?

I agree with Armadillo. It is a penknife, not a machete and you can buy them on every street corner here in Switzerland.

I know the jacket, it is a real high tech gadget one, I think it has iPod earphones built in and lots of other techy nonsense.

They should have clearly labelled it but it is not as bad as some are making out.

Lilyloo · 03/10/2008 14:01

I am not saying it's worse than any type of knife but the fact it is built into / hidden in a jacket is the danger. Obv much easier concealed than a steak knife etc.

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 03/10/2008 14:08

so's pencil sharpner blade or a razor blade or any of the million other household objects that are far easier to get hold of and far more likely to have lying about the house.

MmeLindt · 03/10/2008 14:11

This is the jacket on ebay

You can see the knife on the photos, it is not very big. Does have a corkscrew though, so handy to have.

What is the law then in UK? Are you allowed to carry a penknife in your handbag?

Not sure where it would stand legally tbh agree there are lot's of things you can conceal and use as weapons but i think this way it's being used as a fashion accessory which is sending the wrong message imo!

I shouldn't joke, but did anyone wonder what happened those 11 times?

I think the employee was really a vampire - on the 10th time ""no you see... I TOLD you... you can't KILL me with knives... you need a wooden stake... damn, you have one... ARGH".

Okay, I have a really sick sense of humour and I'll go now...

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/10/2008 14:30

I get your point about knifes being readily available but tend to agree with lilyloo. It's an unecessary attachment and means that someone who doesn't usually have a knife on their person now may well do.

It's an offence to carry a knife in public without good reason although it's not illegal to carry a Swiss Army knife as long as the blade is shorter than 3 inches. But if you use it in a threatening manner then it is illegal IYSWIM.

onager · 03/10/2008 14:31

That kind not very useful as a weapon because you have to open it first.

In any case they are not going to reduce knife attacks by reducing the availability of knives. It doesn't work like that.

That really depends on the circumstances though onager. If you spot a young man walking home alone and you fancy his mobile you have plenty of time to open up your newly aquired Swiss Army knife before you approach him, hold it to his face and scare the shit out of him.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker, Yeah, you're quite right of course.

Still at least it's not something you can use in anger without thinking. I just opened mine to see and I turned it around three times working out which bit was the blade and which the little scissors attachment.

The knife part is fairly sharp though I suspect if you stabbed someone with it that it would close on your fingers. I use a decorating knife frequently to cut paper and it's much sharper than this is.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 16:10

I think this is an hysterical story. (overreaction not funny) - this is a Swiss jacket with a Swiss army penknife in it. They are only penknives! Kids used to carry them. My dh always has one on his person. Someone would have to be very thin and small before you could stab them to death with a swiss army penknife.

FAQ · 03/10/2008 16:20

mabanana - there have been incidents in the news of people being fatally stabbed with a swiss army knife. Also of serious injury too.

Obviously not as common as other types of blades used in stabbings - but they have been used.
