Who on earth could think www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3126602/TK-Maxx-sold-jackets-with-knifes-attached.html this was a good idea

It's not just about being stabbed to death though is it? That's a worst case scenario of course. Having a knife (any sort of knife)held to your face whilst you get robbed isn't pleasant. And the less knives carried around, for whatever reason, the better IMO.

unknownrebelbang · 03/10/2008 17:41

I'm with Saggars on this one.

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 18:12

c) if a 36 yo man brought one I assume it was an adults coat not a child's.

My brother was 6' before he started secondary school. A lot of teenagers are in adults clothes.

I know you can buy knives, including Swiss Army Knives, but they're not being sold for the intention of being concealed about a person.

ImnotMamaGbutsheLovesMe · 03/10/2008 18:51

They are still on sale in some stores and TK Maxx have lost the plot.

Nighbynight · 03/10/2008 19:04

I think this is just a culture clash, and teh jacket was imported from europe.
here in southern germany, you can buy folding knives for 3 euros in teh supermarket, they are no big deal.

there isnt the knife crime that you find in teh uk.

Lilyloo · 03/10/2008 19:14

i think the point is if you went into an army , outdoor store you would expect something of this nature i guess but not in a department store!
Also disagree that it's an overreaction any knife could do damage to someone surely ?

OP posts:
Nighbynight · 03/10/2008 19:21

thats what I am saying though, in bavaria it is no big deal.

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 19:22

Lilyloo not built into a coat. That's the problem, this knife is designed to be concealed within someones coat. If it's sold at Ozzies (for example) the idea is it's a piece of camping equipment and that's what they're selling it for. A knife block sold in Tesco is sold to be used as kitchen knives. Neither shop is selling them for the express purpose of being concealed inside someones coat.

onager · 03/10/2008 20:22

Then again you could do a lot of damage with the buckle of the satchel I used to take to school.

Unless we can get rid of all sharp objects for all ages (ban kitchen knives and scissors and close butchers shops) then I can't see any point in stopping a penknife. Maybe they could be renamed Mini-Tool-Sets because that's kind of what they are.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/10/2008 20:32

I wouldn't be particularly afraid if someone threatened me with their satchel.

Lilyloo · 03/10/2008 20:35

onager have to agree with saggar not sure a satchel comparable.

OP posts:
onager · 03/10/2008 20:38

Well I was kidding really, but also saying that lots of things are sharp that we carry around. I know a knife looks more threatening, but I've had my penknife out and it doesn't look scary enough with all it's little tools . I'd use a steak knife if it were me

Lilyloo · 03/10/2008 20:40

But surely this isn't about what's the scariest/causes most damage knife
It's about a knife becoming a fashion accessory no ?

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 20:44

Clive Mark's aren't selling satchels as weapons. This coat is being sold with a concealed weapon.

MmeLindt · 03/10/2008 21:15

Actually, I agree with Nighty on this one, it is a bit of a culture clash. Here on the continent the knife crime rate is extremely low and the thought of putting a penknife into a jacket is more of a "oh, that might come in handy if I need to take stones out of horses hooves or open a bottle of wine" kind of way. It would never occur to a designer or clothes retailer here that this would be seen as a deliberate attempt to conceal a weapon.

If anyone sees one of the jackets in TK Maxx, buy it and sell it on ebay, Did you see how much the one I linked to is going for?

mabanana · 03/10/2008 21:24

A swiss army penknife is NOT a weapon. The 'blade' is only 2in long! And it's not 'concealed' in the coat, it's handily in the pocket of a Swiss-designed outdoor coat in case the buyer needs a little pair of scissors to snip off a label, a small nail file in case of a snagged nail, a mini-screwdriver to change a battery or a tiny blade to cut the string on a parcel or do something outdoorsy, for which you would be wearing your coat.
I think we have all gone completely mad.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 21:27

Have you people ever seen or owned a swiss army penknife?? I used to have the sweetest little pink one like one of these terrifying specimens raising money for breast cancer

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 21:57

Ya, cause you couldn't kill someone with only two inches

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 21:57

or injure

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 21:59

I don't have a problem with swiss army knives and it's not why there is a problem with this coat, I've already stated that. I understand the culture difference but we're not living in Europe where it's just a swiss army knife, we're in The UK and it will be used as a weapon.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 22:28

But there are millions of Swiss Army penknives out there! YOu can buy them perfectly legally and safely in shops or by mail.
You could probably kill someone with a bleedin' corkscrew and I bet they sell those in TKmaxx without anyone getting completely hysterical (and of course a mini one is handily incorporated in the penknife).
If someone wants to buy a swiss army knife and put it in their pocket this is easy to do, not expensive and not illegal. I fail to see why you can buy a jacket with pockets and a little penknife and nobody shrieks with horror, but someone sells a jacket with pockets and a free penknife there's all this nonsense.

TinkerBellesMum · 03/10/2008 22:41

But they're not sewn into a coat!

mabanana · 03/10/2008 22:46

Why is a free perfectly legal penknife given away with an adult coat, different to people selling coats and perfectly legal penknives?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 03/10/2008 22:48

We are in farking Europe, and do you believe knife crime doesn't exist in the rest of Europe Tinkerbellesmum?

FAQ · 04/10/2008 08:44

so as Swiss Army Knife is not a weapon

here
used as a suicide weapon
here
apparently an accident
another
alleged weapon
and another
and another

I'm sure there are plenty more but I only had 5 minutes.......
