I can't concentrate on ANYTHING Robert Peston says.

I find the way he speaks far too distracting. It's not that I don't like him, I just don't know what he's saying, ever. Stephanie was so much easier.
Anyone else?

I heart RP now almost as much as Evan Davies and Andrew Marr.

I like my economics experts to have a slightly twisted delivery style.

Tinker · 30/09/2008 00:10

We wouldn't be in this mess if we still had Evan Davies though. He'd be so reassuring and calming: "Hey, it's all gonna be ok".

RP must be loving this. I mean that in a good way. This has to be one of the most exciting times you could wish for if you were an economics journalist.

LOL. Not Mrs P, that would be a step too far even for me. I just get so frustrated when people whinge about telly being so superficial and rubbish, that's because more than half the time thee days people get jobs on camera because they look good and give good delivery not because they actually know what they talk about. Apperance is everything so it doesn't matter on a nameless sorting out kids show that they stuff them with sweets packed with e-numbers to make sure the kids look really horrific befor expert X sorts them out, or that we're fed a diet of pap like Wife Swap and Big Brother. And don't get me going about news and current affairs. I won't bang on but my personal hate figure Emily Maitliss on Newsnight, but please. She may speak five languages but she hasn't got a clue about anything, totally rubbish questions and can't interview for toffee because she's so thick. She looks good though and has a nice voice so that's alright then. She's ruining it for the rest of us becuase lots of people will think she must be one of the best birds out there because she's on Newsnight.

In defence of Evan on R4 I think he's been fantastic. None of the others hav a clue about economics and the markets nad without him no one would be put on the spot in a remotely intelligent way. He actually makes decent points and spears them all as he should. Thank god they gave him a job on Today otherwise we'd all be seriously let down.

And I'm not Ms Evan either, partic since he's that way inclined!

I am more in love than ever with RP right now - I don't see the point in watching a smooth and attractive presenter read an autocue live. It would be quicker to read it myself. With RP, you know he understands what he is explaining to us live on air and you can pick up on nuances that would be missing from someone who was on tv for superficial qualities alone.

I also feel strongly that it is a good thing that the BBC does not just have people who look and sound perfectly polished. That way you get the kind of plastic surrealism of much of US TV. I like to think that ordinary people with a thorough grasp of their subject can get on TV.

Soprana · 30/09/2008 10:02

The thing is, bumbling, that his delivery gets in the way of the message, and is a distraction. He might well be the greatest economics pundit who ever graced the airwaves, but I for one (and I'm not alone - I didn't start this thread after all) find it difficult to follow him because of how he puts his material over. I agree with Sophy that his recorded pieces are much, much better. I heard him again this morning on Today, and really enjoyed his recorded piece and was able to absorb what he was saying because his delivery was smoother. I'm sure all he needs is a bit of training. Bless.

bumbling · 30/09/2008 10:50

Def agree Soprana and it is v irritating, but am also with Upwind that I'd rather someone a bit annoying who knows their stuff is onscreen rather than some dimwit with nice hair and a great way with And finallys. You're right that extra and intensive live training/coaching would help a lot, pity he hasn't got time!

sophy · 30/09/2008 12:13

Actually it's not just that he hasn't got the time.

I have heard that he can be a bit arrogant about stuff like that and when he was offered help by producers at the BBC he turned it down.

Not one to gossip though.

I can't listen to Robert Peston. He starts speaking and I switch off. I'm really pleased to know I'm not the only ome as I was bginning to wonder if I am neurotic.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 19/05/2010 21:14

OH thanks for letting us know that, findon

Although why one would search through the archives for a deceased thread about Robert fecking Peston is beyond me
