Reading quite a few threads lately where mums-to-be are denied the resources of the NHS to have the birth they wish for (water, home, etc) I'm flabbergasted to read this:

Of course not, but she still deserved the care to have her babies, surely.

That's a nasty, sneering piece of 'journalism' from a vile paper.

I'm not obese or a smoker or a heavy drinker. However I like most others may require treatment at some stage in my life. It's a National Health Service, set up to serve the nation. It's certainly not perfect but neither are most people. We all make life choices. Smokers, drinkers and the obese are the obvious targets for the media.

What a horrible article and some horrible posts to go with it. The woman didn't have fertility treatment, she conceived three naturally. She deserves no more vilification than any overweight woman who conceives any child and in my opinion that is none. That level of obesity is very rarely due to simple greed or laziness it is often due to hormonal imbalances or severe psychological problems. Give the woman a break and be pleased that we have a healthcare system that saved those babies.

How very Daily Mail. Sheesh.

Kerrymum I really disagree with you. I was told that I was putting myself at risk when I found out that I was pregnant, and some medical professionals were very negative about what may or may not have happened to my baby. At the end of the day, I had a healthy child and all is fine. Overweight people have just as much right to have a family as everyone else.

You could argue that anyone who gets pregnant is completely irresponsible, looking at the state of the planet. Or looking at the 1/3rd of pregnancies that are unplanned (oh, you irresponsible woman, weren't you taking folic acid/avoiding tea and coffee/etc. etc. etc.)

Human beings, like all animals, have a very strong drive to reproduce. And we come in lots of different shapes and sizes.

she was 40 stone BEFORE having 3 babies

Congratulations to that mum. What lovely babies. Of course the NHS should have helped them through their birth.

Horrible article. "World's fattest woman"

Why should overweight women not have children? Yes, there is more of a risk but it is not like a smoker who can just stop smoking when they discover they are pregnant.

She looks like a very happy woman. I hope that she gets the help she obviously needs to lose some weight.

Hey, just got back. No, I didn't mean to slate the lady at all. Glad her babies are healthy and she is trying to pull herself together for her kids. Hope she will live a long life for the sake of them.

My point is: there are so many women giving birth every day yet they or their babies are neglected in some form by people of the medical profession along the way. In this case they managed to pull everyone together and customize equipment, etc. Why does she deserve 'more' treatment than any other mum-to-be?

I guess I just wanted to say how inhumane the system cn be and the lottery of who deserves more care than others. How can they pull 68 people out of the hat whereas some areas in the UK have zero support for patients?

Herbie, how Am very sorry to hear this and so sad for you. I don't really know what to say. I hope there are ways for you to get better!

I'm impressed that not only she conceived naturally but that she had triplets on the grounds that obesity can have a serious negative affect on fertility.
FWIW I'm glad that we the system we have worked for her and her babies, but the OP is right to highlight the lack of adequate choice for other mothers.
I also think she doesn't look like she weighs 40 stone, but do hope that having her babies will give her the incentive to lose some weight. It sounds like it has, anyway.

So Leanne lives with her Mum Jane. Because Leanne is not very mobile and has difficulty navigating stairs, presumably Mum Jane will do a great deal (most?) of the childcare? And that is my main question - now that the babies are here, who is going to take care of them? It would tax even a fit/energetic person....

ThingOne · 17/08/2008 14:46

I wonder how much extra was due to her weight as well, apart from strengthening the operating table.

And if you actually read the article, through the sneering nastiness, is says her weight problems stem from a medical problem. Sounds like she got into a nasty spiral of poor self esteem as she was overweight which got out of control. She needs help to lose weight not sneering. Hope she got some dosh from the paper.

Report
wotulookinat · 17/08/2008 15:18

I doubt very much that she is 40 stone.

And I guess a lot of medical staff are needed for a CS for triplets anyway.
