I have a feeling something big is very imminent.

Same.

Our local school has closed tomorrow because of a cyber security attack. They can't even email parents and are relying on word of mouth.

Local FB page has a lot to say about it.

Could that be to do with this?

So if the leccy goes off, my freezer goes off. I can't cook my stored potatoes or rice. My bread maker doesn't work without leccy, so what am I supposed to stock up on?

Cans of soup and baked beans, microwave sachets of rice, tins of fruit, sardines, boxes of fruit juice, biscuits, chocolate, nuts, tins of corned beef, dairylea, peanut butter, jam, crackers, crisps, cereal bars, spaghetti hoops, jars of olives, pet food, Christmas cake, dried fruit, popcorn, long life milk, tins of custard,. A million things that are calorie dense, can be eaten cold and keep for ages.

I have ignored all this, but maybe I should buy a few things this weekend.

A portable gas camping stove

About time, we had a proper war.

What a fucking foolish thing to say.

In the UK?

Yes probably, there’s been a big issue with some systems this week.
the optician had to write everything down by hand during my visit today as their usual digital system was down

If you’ve got some sliced bread in the freezer .. that would be useful but stocking up on potatoes and flour isn’t going to work too well.

canned potatoes, canned veg, long life milk etc. microwave rice can be eaten cold

most freezers will keep things frozen for a few days if you don’t constantly open the freezer door.

I think it's good that we're getting this advice out there. I don't think people should neccessarily panic though - from what I understand, some other European countries are way ahead of us in terms of advising the public on being prepared and resilient in case of emergency, whereas we've maybe been a bit complacent (I certainly have - I didn't even think about a torch or wind-up radio until this advice came out).

Politicians need to understand that nobody believes a word of their fearmongering lies any more, and that trying to weaponise fear as a method of controlling the population will not work a second time.

Folol me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I find comments like this very strange. Absolutely no faith in government and yet complete faith in the government to keep things running the way we're accustomed to.

I'm sure your wide open eyes will keep you and your family warm and fed in the event of a prolonged power cut.

Ifailed · 23/10/2026 11:02

It's a timely reminder. It doesn't have to be a man-made event to disrupt things, just look at the the effect of the Icelandic volcano cloud a few years ago, prolonged bad weather (ask anyone one lives in Northern Scotland, or remotely elsewhere), water problems (we had no water for 3 days a year ago) disease etc.

It makes sense to have a few days of food, water, heating, batteries, candles in stock, most of it can be used and replaced so it doesn't go to waste.

Where've you been - keep a supply of food and essential medicines in.

I work in cyber security, its not if, its when.

Exactly. Russia alone has been ramping up it's efforts for quite some time.

Yes we're catching up with many Euopean countries indeed government has based a lot of their advice on France and Netherlands. To me it seems eminently sensible to have some basic preparations for longer power outages, IT system - esp card payment - outages etc

HerbertPootle · 23/10/2026 11:19

We have gas BBQ in garden, would use that! I think it’s lots of things that we need to prepare for, not just cyber attack. Dsis is climate scientist working with government, super El Niño predicted to cause more severe flooding / storms in UK this winter.

Imagine so confidently asserting this kind of opinion, when the very fact you think this is fear mongering means you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I recommend doing half an hour's reading on the impact of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and supply chains, there's plenty of real life examples that have happened over the last several years, you might learn something.

Bikenutz · 22/10/2026 22:30

Yes - that was my first thought on reading this. Surely the logical thing is to carry cash. And get in the habit of using food shops with short supply chains.

Which shops are they then?

dontcookwontcook · 23/10/2026 11:32

I don’t really pay attention to this stuff. When they start funding defense at a higher rate, I will pay attention

tho most people have a couple of days worth of food even if they don’t think they do.

Hyroplate · 23/10/2026 11:33

It just makes sense to be able to manage for a few days without power or shops. The fact that this seems so new to so many just proves it's needed.

I've always kept enough in so that it's no disaster if circumstances mean I can't get to the shop for a while (weather, illness, finances, time). I still have the box of candles my Great Aunt gave me for "if the lights go out" when I got married.

There are reasons we need to think about it now, but we should have been doing it anyway. Most other European countries have.

"They" are funding defense at a higher rate.

hewasflirtingwithbeverleymacca · 23/10/2026 11:39

I haven’t read all of the posts and articles on this so forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but will gas be effected? I ask this as someone has mentioned the electric going off but then people are saying to buy soup. Well if you’ve got electric does that mean you’re scuppered but ok to cook if you’ve got a gas ring? I’d imagine myself that gas would be affected. Also I took a screenshot of the recommended stockpile from Wes Streeting and a bit confused about bottled water. They said it can be used for cooking but then advises buying food that doesn’t require cooking(?)

Are ”they”?

wasnt it burnham who said

"…everything to support our national security, but it can't come at the expense of social security”
sounds like welfare will be paid over extra money for defense

but I’ll wait for the budget next week
im not convinced personally
