Was Jason Arday just the perfect victim?

1000 replies

KellyK2026 · 15/08/2026 16:01

Surely I can’t be the only one that feels like Jason Arday was a victim, right? Yesterday he was found dead and I feel bad for him. Here’s the reasons why I think he was a victim:

  1. It is absolutely insane to me that Cambridge University would appoint him as a Professor when he was in the early stages of his career. It’s practically unheard of. At any university you typically have to earn your dues (which means working as an academic for many years) OR do something truly special, like a Nobel Prize nomination, to be promoted to Professor. I cannot imagine the amount of pressure he had been under to prove himself and likely had a tremendous amount of imposter syndrome. Cambridge let him down.
  2. I’ve worked in academia for many years, and let me tell you, academics are under a tremendous amount of pressure to publish. This pressure can compromise quality. Arday isn’t the first nor will he be the last to publish questionable papers.
  3. As I’ve worked in academia for years, I’ve experienced academics make racist and sexist remarks first hand. One white academic I worked with got drunk at a work get together and started a rant about how Black people shouldn't be president (this was when Obama was in power), that Obama was a Muslim and interracial relationships were ‘disgusting’. What made this somewhat even worse was that this particular academic wrote about racism in the public sphere, so he profited from writing about Black struggles while harbouring these personal views. There was no repercussions for him, despite presenting himself as something other than what he was.
  4. I’ve also been sexually assaulted at a conference by a male academic. No repercussions for him either and he no doubt pretends to be a feminist in his work.
  5. I don’t think it’s in doubt that Arday had autism. Now I don’t know how it affected him personally, but, again, that must’ve been extremely difficult and perhaps even blurred what is and isn’t acceptable in higher education.
  6. He was also cleared of plagiarism but, again, so many academics have plagiarised ideas and papers, but they haven’t been strung up like Arday has been.
So, long story short, I feel like Cambridge let him down. And I feel like he was targeted because there’s plenty of other examples but they never get called out and nobody cares. It was a witch hunt. But I’d be interested to hear what others have to say on this matter.

I had enough of the OP paaaages back and flounced, to which she gave a devastating “cheerio!”. I’m glad to see others called her out. I particularly like her assertion that we can’t possibly call him a fantasist et al because we don’t know him and it’s a medical diagnosis, yet she’s so happy to call him an autist. (“Because he said he was”… yeah, and he said a lot of other shite too)

MN is the place where posters lose their minds (“you’re STEALING from your employer. It’s THEFT”) if the OP wants to pull a sickie for a reason other than they’re at deaths door, but with JA it’s apparently “ohhh it’s fine to lie on your CV”.

Yeah, some people embellish a bit about the exact scope of their duties over one project at work…not what he did.

I can’t abide this “it was up to Cambridge to fact check him” as if anyone would go along with that if it were their kid saying “yeah, but you knew I’d joyride the family Mondeo, so you should have hidden the keys!”. No. He was a grown ass man. He has responsibility not to be a charlatan and people take him in good faith.

Not all people are the same, but my ex husband had (as he would describe it) Asperger’s, and no way would he have twisted like JA did.

Cambridge should have conducted their due diligence but saw he was black and under the age of 40, so their eyes lit up.

Most of the outlandish claims were his personal feats which Cambridge were not advertising for a cancer surviving marathon runner.

They failed on the basic level, plagiarism claims are serious accusations they used JA race as a field to stop discussions.

As I said previously, JA is not blameless, he too was manipulating the racial bias to finger a journalist to avoid the right to reply to serious claims and it’s probably a fair comment to suggest he suffered from some form of mental disorder.

If Cambridge had carried out due diligence and not lowered or completely disregarded the requirements for the job just because he was black, this ultimately would have been avoided.

Cambridge were engaging in racial discrimination and that’s a far more serious issue given it’s a prestigious institution. You’re always going to find a liar, a cheat and thief in all walks of life, what we don’t expect is one of UK’s most respected universities, operating dishonesty in hiring process because someone’s dark enough for the job.

JA is a charlatan- Cambridge is an academic institution so their behaviour has far reaching consequences and seems indicative of how many UK sectors operate.

Nocommentisacomment · 18/08/2026 20:01

Unfortunately, his case is an example of the deeper problems within academic hiring. In many countries, false claims on a CV would be investigated, qualifications verified, and references properly checked. Yet in the Uk, institutions appear so dependent on reputation and trust that basic verification is overlooked.

As an ex-academic myself, I find this deeply troubling. A system that relies on assumptions of integrity allows people to exaggerate or misrepresent achievements while genuine, talented researchers struggle for opportunities.

Universities have a duty to protect academic standards, but they more interested in reputation, publicity, and funding than in accountability.

Sadly, academia is increasingly turning professors into influencers. Institutions reward visibility, self-promotion, and media attention over real scholarship. They are effectively selling their academic values for funding and public image, without considering the damage this causes to those who dedicate themselves to honest research.

It is a sad reflection of where universities are heading when appearances matter more than integrity.

It’s been suggested in articles that he used it as an excuse because he couldn’t remember/discuss his PhD due to copying large chunks of it.

I also find it weird but not for the same reasons as you. I mean, did he tell the people before the viva started? If so, did they not wonder where his scars were? Or did he add on this brain tumour story later, like he amended other stories like the testicular cancer?

People who make up things don’t need to. There can be many reasons, most of which have been mentioned here. Why did he lie about the pig head? The unsurvivable car accident? The locked-in syndrome? The sheer amount of bizarre stories is pathological IMO.

I’ve said throughout he clearly had an issue with lying/exaggeration, but we will never know why because we can’t diagnose a dead man and his medical records will never be released. I really wish he was alive and a formal investigation was being carried out because it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I do plan on reading his autobiography though, out of interest.

point me to where I said I ‘own’ the thread or others can’t comment. I’d love to see it. I’m just not wanting to engage with lots of comments that have nothing to do with the JA case (like this one), but many of them have been deleted by MNHQ anyway.

Look, you’re clearly determined to see the good in him, but the amount and content of the lies he told are a massive red flag. I’d take anything you know about him with a pinch of salt. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out he came from a privileged middle class family and actually passed 5 GCSEs at grade C but found the ‘poor me’ story worked for him.

I agree with this. I also think Cambridge has something to answer for in the hiring of Cofnas too. I watched an interview with him yesterday where he said he believes different races have different intellectual abilities?! He’s clearly a racist (and was eventually fired for it) and I’ve no idea how he slipped through the net either. They also have a handful of Professors who are currently being investigated or have been found guilty of sexual harassment of female students. I don’t know what’s up with their hiring process, but clearly something is going wrong and Arday is just the tip of a very large iceberg.

Its in his book but the preview that was released in January said it was testicular cancer, so he either had both or just 1 or neither.
But as his medical records are private we will never know. However when you add his other medical claims, the coma, the locked in syndrome where he remembers the Dr's telling his mum to switch off his life support before he made a miraculous full recovery and his broken leg which he ran 9 marathons on i highly doubt that any of it is true

Don’t forget the epilepsy brought on by the brutal beating he suffered at the hands of racist thugs. By some strange quirk of fate one or two of his assailants ended up being students of his and he even became godfather to one’s child!

The guy was a walking miracle and I feel bad for joking but when you put it altogether it’s hard to believe he actually said all this stuff.

Are people with Autism sophisticated and prolific fantastist and manipualtive liars? I didn't think these were classic traits.

Totally agree.
Was discussing exactly this with my autistic husband yesterday.
Yes, we know that not every autistic person is the same but there are a lot of autistic traits -like not drawing attention to yourself-which conflict very much with Jason Ardays behaviour.
I don’t for one second think he was autistic -I think it was just another of his lies.
And unless I see a report from someone who is qualified to diagnose then I won’t believe it.

Okay, I checked, it was AskingQuestionsAllTheTime whose comments were deleted. You’re both saying the same things over and over, so it’s getting confusing. I haven’t really been keeping up with your conversation as I haven’t found it particularly enlightening. Of course, keep commenting if you wish, but if you’re doing it to get my attention specifically that it is likely that I’m not reading most of the comments you’re making.

I was told on another JA thread that his dear mother was a nurse who worked within the mental health field.

I made a comment about wondering where his nearest and dearest were when he was regurgitating patently untrue information.

Apparently we can ask questions of everyone but JA and his inner circle.

I maintain the ones I feel sorry for is his students who were maligned as exhibiting white privilege and the journalist who did not, at any point, show anything other than a motive to break a story on plagiarism.

scrutinising JA from an academic perspective or personal one - despite the fabrication is like a poisoned chalice.

my anger is mainly reserved for Cambridge and the wider agenda they were subscribing to but make no mistakes, there needs to be personal accountability and reflection for all players involved.

It would be interesting to get his mother’s account on it given her background, but I doubt she would be willing to talk to the media.
