Here

Or do you think it is outrageously dangerous and highly irresponsible?

Dh can do it. Listens to radio, speaks to me and kids, eats, etc, etc. Drives me mad when he's borrowed my car to go anywhere alone - I get in after him and have to turn off the radio, shift his rubbish, etc. Yet, he is a very good driver and I feel very confident when he's driving.

I have a friend who not only smokes whilst she is driving, roll's her own cigarettes (whilst she is driving). She knows full well why I won't go anywhere with her when she is driving.

You arent allowed to drink or eat whilst driving and I dont think smoking either.

joash · 25/01/2005 23:31

Actually jessicasmummy if you have an accident whilst doing any of those things (talk, eat, drink, smoke, touch the radio, heating controls, turn lights on etc) you could be seen as driving with undue care and attention.

I had a friend who was like that. You really couldn't speak to her whilst she was driving. I usually answer my daughter monosyllabically but that's because I'm trying to listen to the radio . However, for those that need to concentrate, are you actively thinking about every driving manouevre etc.? I drive on autopilot and can often travel for hourlong journeys without being aware of any of it.

but surely these things shouldnt be in a car then? drink holders, ash trays etc. surely it is a marketing problem and a manufacturing problem... why have heating controls, radio's lights etc if the driver cannot change them because if there was an accident, it would be a bookable offence?

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:33

no I can drive without thinking about it. Just can't talk.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:34

im the same tinker.... i travel 200 miles every few weeks or so, and before i know it 4 hours has passed and im there!

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:34

You dont have to use them whilst driving. You vould pull over.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:34

tried pulling over on 100 miles worth of motorway?

marthamoo, excellent post, no-one else has said it so i will.
fwiw i don't eat drive while eating apples (or anything else - not allowed in our car) or use a mobile (don't have one) or smoke (don't do it)
Radio can be tuned from the steering wheel in our car. But yes, i have changed a CD while driving, who hasn't? I think as MM says, the value of this case (but is it worth £10k?) is to remind us that that is not such a great idea, and perhaps we should do those things when stopped at traffic lights etc.

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:35

You can be booked without causing an accident.

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:35

I have driven for 2 1/2 hours soon after I passed my test, on the M25, which was scary, and I couldn't talk at all!!

Branster · 25/01/2005 23:36

well, no I wouldn't eat an apple whilst driving because first of all I wouldn't eat an apple in public (takes the lipstick off ) and secondly I am incapable of doing anything else whilst driving. I am the most pathetic driver you can find and am surprised i can manage to change gears whilst driving! I once managed to open the window whilst the car was moving and was most pleased with myself for that. I can have a chat with a passager but I wouldn't be able to use a mobile whilst driving. I truely do admire all the other drivers who seem to be able to safely do all these extra activities without even having to think about them. I wish I could do that. Since I know I cannot, I don't even try. One of my personal failures.
And like joash, I don't use a radio, it's actually broken and even if it was working i don't think I'd be using it.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:37

i drove 195 miles a week after i passed my test, m25 and m3 - had my music going the whole time. I hadnt quite mastered the art of smoking and driving then tho - so stopped for a fag halfway but did drink from a sports cap bottle

Whilst you were driving on the motorway? Really?

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:39

yes hercules.....

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:41

I have mastered motorway driving now, but what you have to remember is I was a very nervous learner, didn't want to drive at all, but had to for my kids. I passed first time, and am confident now, but I still can't talk much while driving, but I can't Mumnet and talk either

MistressMary · 25/01/2005 23:46

As I said in an earlier post you got to be careful of other drivers no matter how good or not we are.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:47
