Here

Or do you think it is outrageously dangerous and highly irresponsible?

Even if you risk killing someone?

Caligula · 25/01/2005 23:14

I don't think anyone has the right to make a "choice" which is a) against the law and b) dangerous to other people.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:15

good point - surely talking means you dont have 100% control over the vehicle.... and anyone who says that they dont talk to passengers, or their kids etc while driving lies....

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:16

At least you can do that with two hands on the wheel.....

joash · 25/01/2005 23:16

Depends what you mean by 'talking'. Honestly, I'm pathetic - I have to fully concentrate on what I'm doing. I can reply to people when they ask me something, but can't maintain any sort of conversation. Constantly ribbed by friends and relatives, cause I drive and I may as well be alone in the car.

Tinker · 25/01/2005 23:17

You listen to the radio with 2 hands as well.

anyone that spends 4 hours on a motorway with both hands on the wheel ends up with sore arms... and no-one i have ever been in a car with has ever spent the whole journey with either both hands on the wheel or one hand on gear and one hand on wheel

jessica'smum - not lying. I can't do anything that distracts me. As for the kids - no car seat in my car, so when we go anywhere with the kids, we're in DH's car. I use public transport when around town, etc.

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:18

If you have a cig in one hand and need to urgently use both hands, what would you do?

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:18

you come accross as a very nervous driver....

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:19

i can use both hands even with a fag in my hand in that situation

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:21

im not trying to defend myself here.... i just say that its what i do.... i wouldnt eat an apple while driving - not the easiest of things to eat, but i would say that 90% of the british public who drive do not spend the entire time behind the wheel with both hands on the wheel

joash · 25/01/2005 23:21

Nope - just very careful, married to an ex-copper. Heard of and seen far too many accidents caused by people doing daft things (putting make-up on, turning to speak to passengers, eating, nose-picking, even breast feeding) to not drive carefully. Passed test first time - told extremely confident. Took and passed advanced driving lessons, again told very confident and same with motorway driving lessons. I think all should be compulsory.

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:22

I find it hard to drive and talk, but I can answer one word, can't hold a full conversation. I smoke while drive and Dh helps me eat (passes sweeties into my mouth) But I would eat an apple, but thats because I don't really like them

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:22

that should have been "wouldn't eat an apple"

joash · 25/01/2005 23:24

That's it exactly sparklymieow. Glad it's not just me that can't hold a conversation. I do pass sweeties into DH's mouth, whilst he's driving - but couldn't cope if anyone tried to do that to me.

ScummyMummy · 25/01/2005 23:25

I was thinking that too, jessicasmummy. joash- you sound like my mum- she just couldn't multitask to the tiniest extent in the car. There was emphatically no listening to the radio in our mini cooper van I can tell you. I'm the same as her and will probably have to ban noise etc to drive safely if I ever get round to passing my test. I thought everyone was like that but I now believe that there really are people who are much more confident drivers and can listen to radios, allow their kids to talk, eat apples and the like whilst driving safely.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:25

i am a safe driver - feel more comfortable and safer behind the wheel of my car than i do walking down the street.

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:27

I can see that most people do these things whilst driving but cant see how you can do them and have the same control as if you werent doing them.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:27

with a crying 6month old, dh nattering constantly radio/cd player on - no worries. helps me drive. i actually cant drive with no radio on - complete silence drives me mad.

sparklymieow · 25/01/2005 23:27

Dh thinks I am wierd that I can't hold a conversation while driving. I passes my test 13 months ago now, so still quite new to it really. I do listen to music and sing along to it, but talking.... NOPE! I find it hard when the kids ask me something as I always miss what they have said.

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:28

I listen to the radio but cant hold a proper conversation.

jessicasmummy · 25/01/2005 23:28

in that case, really until it becomes law that no one is allowed to talk, eat, drink, smoke, touch the radio, heating controls, turn lights on etc in a car then i think there is always going to be a differnece of opinions

hercules · 25/01/2005 23:29

I thought it was law already not to do some of those things.....
