Andy Burnham is standing!

This is the first time in ages I've felt excited and hopeful about our politics. Will he be blocked by Starmer's allies?

I’m devastated this is happening. Reform will win both the mayoralty and the by- election. The Labour Party will tear itself to bits cheerfully helped by most of the MSM and social media and all at a time when there might, just might have been some hope for Labour. I’m bitterly disappointed in AB - I would have expected better from him - more fool me.

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 24/01/2026 17:25

Surely it depends who is standing to be Mayor ? I wouldn't be surprised if an independent candidate wins in Gorton.

hattie43 · 24/01/2026 17:30

It’s going to be a Labour bloodbath .

EasternStandard · 24/01/2026 17:33

He’s got some main backers in his party, Rayner, Powell, Khan, unions but it still has to go through NEC. It’ll be hard to block it, it’ll likely go ahead.

He’s ’asking Permission’ to stand.

corlan · 24/01/2026 17:35

Could someone explain how this is a good thing for Labour? Surely infighting and Labour moving further left makes it much more likely we will get a Reform government next?

Justmadesourkraut · 24/01/2026 17:35

It could be good if he's lined up to take over as leader in a peaceful handover and lead into the next election, but he's not going to magically make everything ok by taking over as leader anytime soon. We live in a messy world and there are no quick fixes. He will, as others have said, leave a huge hole behind him in Manchester for reform to fill . . .

JambonetFromage · 24/01/2026 17:37

Oh god I fear this could go horribly wrong. I’m not necessarily averse to a Burnham leadership but the path to getting h there looks messy at best and a total disaster for the Party at worst.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/01/2026 17:38

I’m not sure a city would elect a Reform mayor. The coyotes tend to vote Labour. Also it is a vote of education level and Manchester is packed with universities.

Buy metropolitan areas tend to swing left. Even now.

Ive read that the Hreens could win that by election.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 24/01/2026 17:50

I have always liked Andy Burnham, and I've been very disappointed in Keir Starmer, but I really don't think a divisive I leadership election is what the country needs right now. That's what the Tories kept doing, and it didn't solve any of their problems.

The issues that this country is facing right now are far, far bigger than questions about which Labour politician is in the top job. We need to learn how to navigate our way through the strange new world in which we find ourselves. We need to build back public services after 14 years of Tory austerity. We urgently need to invest in our defence in light of growing international threats and the fact that we can no longer count the US as an ally. We need to tackle the mental health crisis and support people who could work to be able to do so. We need to invest in education to ensure that we properly equip future generations for a world that is going to be totally transformed by AI in just a few years. We need to tackle disinformation on social media and restore people's faith in the democratic process. We need to promote better cohesion and integration in our diverse communities. We need to rebuild our relationship with Europe and other potential allies after the disaster that was Brexit. We need to somehow get the economy growing again. And we need to quash the growing threat from the far right.

What we definitely don't need is a load of backbiting and petty infighting within the Labour Party while Rome burns. They need to pull together, with all talents focused on the national effort and not their own ambition. The speculation about Starmer's job has to stop. If Burnham, Streeting, Raynor or anyone else believe that they could do a better job, then they need to step up and help him succeed. If they think he lacks vision, then they should share their own vision and bring him on board with it. If they think he lacks strategy, they should help him draw up a game plan. If they think he is incompetent, then they should roll up their sleeves and help to make things happen. If they think he is a poor communicator, then they should get out there and tell a better story on his behalf.

Starmer isn't ever going to set the world on fire, but he is a fundamentally decent man and I do believe that he is doing his best. Stabbing him in the back will achieve nothing in my view, and will only backfire on Burnham in the longer term.

If Burnham wants to be an MP again, then I absolutely think they should let him stand. It shouldn't be about game playing, it should be about who is the best candidate for the job. But if he does return to Westminster, I hope that he will do so with loyalty, integrity and patience. Starmer won't be leader forever. He can have another shot at the top job when a vacancy becomes available. I hope that he doesn't jump the gun too soon.

Let’s hope…

But regardless of the outcome in the elections, this will tear Labour apart

I hope not. Mancunians as well as being traditionally mainly left wing are keen on Burnham. They see he’s done a good job as Mayor. They’ll be sad to see him go as Mayor but I think they’ll get behind him in an election even if they’re not keen on Labour.

HighStreetOtter · 24/01/2026 18:02

Maybe he’s planning to be a backbencher until the next election, Starmer gets defeated and steps down. Burnham takes over as leader of the opposition party and maybe leads Labour to victory at the general election after the next one? 🤷‍♀️. Dunno, it’s a long time to be waiting. Or maybe he’s not that bothered about being prime minister and just wants to get back to national level politics?

Clearinguptheclutter · 24/01/2026 18:03

I think it’s good news, though not sure who could feasibly replace him as such as good mayor

he deserves a front bench role in Westminster, if it happens it doesn’t necessarily have to be a threat to starmer though of course it will be seen as one

while I think he’d be a fantastic PM I suspect he is too “northern” to be elected.

Maybe. But that would be much easier to believe if he hadn't been quite so open about his leadership ambitions.

letsallchant · 24/01/2026 18:04

Absolutely what @Bourdic and @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack said. Can't see a good outcome from this, the risks are high, and a number of the problems the UK faces just have no good, fast solution no matter who is in the top job.

I also had read somewhere that the rules said Burnham would have to stand down as Mayor before he could even broach the possibility of standing, but I am guessing that was inaccurate.

No, he’s sought permission to stand. Different things. I think he’s mad. He could easily end up without a job. Manchester mayor could be Reform.
He’s an excellent mayor but he wasn’t a great Cabinet minister. He’s also stood to be leader twice and lost twice.

He’s stood for leader twice before. Of course he wants the top job

Gooseyloopey · 24/01/2026 18:09

I’d be furious if I were his wife. From successful mayor on an excellent wage to uncertainty

Maybe she out earns him anyway and says go for it.
