I wonder if the woman breast or bottle fed. That might make a difference as to whether or not she has always been a touch heavier than 'the norm'
Gonna duck now!

MrsTittleMouse · 10/06/2008 11:22

My DD (same age) looks fatter than the little girl in the photo. And she has never eaten chips, crisps, sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks. She has had cake 3 or 4 times in her whole life, and had a small piece of biscuit twice. Her favourite foods are fruit and vegetables, but she put on a lot of weight when she was exlusively breastfed and is still losing it. She's really active, but was a late walker, so hasn't had as much time to run off the weight yet.
Should I expect a phonecall from the DM?

Tortington · 10/06/2008 11:28

i wonder why the mother did this artcle

seems bizarre to brag that your kid eats nothing but chips as we all know this is tantermount to diggin your own grave and carving "bad mum" headstone.

i dont believe the she doesn't like veggies argument - thats bullshit.

i reckon its a more " i can't be fucked choppin and peeling and squishin "

solo · 10/06/2008 11:34

Yep, I think you are probably right Custardo.

Twinkie1 · 10/06/2008 11:40

Ds won't touch veg either but he eats lots of fruit and is normal to skinny for his age I think.

Oh I love it when mums come on here saying don't feed them anything else for a few days and they will eat it or it is the parents fault as they are obviously shite cooks! This is not the case at all - I have a DD who eats everything (except olives) and a DS who is a fussy bugger - he is only 3.5 at the mo but before he goes to school, when he is able to understand and a bit more reasonable we will get to the stage where he is given a little veg at each meal and told that he has to eat it regardless of whether he wants it until we ascertain what he likes and what he doesn't - it's not worth the trauma now when he eats such a limited diet to turn meal times into a battleground!

belgo · 10/06/2008 12:43

MrsTM - I also know a couple of babies like that - officially 'overweight' despite havin a healthy diet and sensible parents. One mother in particular gets very stressed out about it.

sheepgoMEEP · 10/06/2008 15:54

my ds was a very podgy baby at 18 months-big chunky legs fat tummy, ate like a horse and drank a lot of milk too (he was bottlefed)I must admit he didn't have the best of diets, he wasn'ta chip eater but he did eat a lot of jars and tins He was quite fussy.

Now he is a slim tall 8 year olde whon is underweight slightly even though he eats quite well, very healthily loves his fruit and veg.

dd1 was bottlefed too and stayed on the 9th centile or just below throughout her baby and toddlerhood. She ate very healthily from the start of weaning as I learnt that you could give a baby what you hadyourself providing it was nutritious. She hates chips too lol.

Dd2 hefty 9 lb 8er slightly chubby although is not a huge eater and she eats healthy too. She weighs just over 20lb.

so there an 'obese' child not always an obese adult!

figroll · 10/06/2008 17:01

That child isn't obese for goodness sake!! She looks fine to me - my youngest was a fatso when little and she is as skinny as a lath now.

Not too good just to eat chips, but then it isn't good to just eat any one type of food as you need a balanced diet. Probably just more Daily Mail rubbish reporting imho.

fullmoonfiend · 10/06/2008 17:08

I'd love my ds to eat chips...or any kind of potato. or rice. Or pasta

Is just under 4 stone ok for a nearly 8-yr-old?

TheDullWitch · 10/06/2008 17:08

This is quite funny, generate your own Daily Mail headlines.

Divastrop · 10/06/2008 17:13

well its nice to know theres nothing bad happening in the world if stuff like this is getting into the papers

Mercy · 10/06/2008 17:14

"If you gave the child nothing but vegetables for a few days, she'd eat them soon enough."

I don't think so!

Nothing wrong with chips, but a lot wrong with coke imo. Children under 5, and especially under 2, need a high fat diet for brain development.

There is no difference between chips, mashed or roast potatoes (for a child)

2point4kids · 10/06/2008 17:18

Wow, 2st 2lb is obese for an 18 month old???

My DS is 2yrs 8 ,months and is 2st 4lbs. He is tall and so skinny his ribs stick out. He doesnt eat a lot but what he does eat is a healthy varied diet. Of course he has chips and chocolate but he has lots of fruit and veg and meat too.
I weighed him recently to check that he wasnt too skinny. I am at the fact that his weight might actually mean he is fat!!!

I agree that this little girls diet is bad, but she looks a reasonable weight to me from the pics.

ds2 weighed 27 lbs at 1 no one questionned it

dinny · 10/06/2008 17:56

2.2 average weight of a 4 yo? God, my ds is 3 and weighs 3.3!

and he is NO WAY obese

Divastrop · 10/06/2008 18:02

i was thinking that.my ds's weighed 2st at 1 year and nobody said anything.

dd2 is 2.6 and weighs 2st 7 lb and she isnt obese by any stretch of the imagination.

2.2 is the average weight of a 4 year old-when?in the middle ages?or in another counrty?

lovecat · 11/06/2008 23:51

dinny/Divastrop, I'm so glad you posted that! DD is 3.3 and weighs just over 3 stone - there's not a pick of fat on her (apart from her spooge cheeks but DH had them til he was about 7 so I reckon she's inherited them from him!) so I wasn't worried - until I read that headline!

nametaken · 12/06/2008 00:01

I saw this report in the DM the other day and thought it was quite strange as the little girl doesn't actually look obese.

TwoIfBySea · 12/06/2008 13:14

Just chips - is that a vegan diet then?

To be honest, the mother might need a good kick up the rear in her attitude to food but the kid doesn't look like a porker. She is chubby for sure but I've known lots of toddlers who looked like that at that age and who ate a good variety of foods.

My dts were and still are on the slim side despite eating well and I always worried if people would think I wasn't feeding them enough!

bethoo · 12/06/2008 13:15

isnt that the kid from last nights programme Britains biggest babies?

UpSinceCrapOClock · 12/06/2008 13:33

Lol at the 'generate your own DM headlines' website!

PinkPussyCat · 12/06/2008 13:38

Not read the whole thread but

At "all the other kids were fed the same thing and they're all fine!"

Beggars belief

That poor wee girl
