NHS staff cuts

Well, this is going to go down well with NHS staff. In an already understaffed NHS they decide to go ahead with loads of job cuts. Ok, maybe just management but, seriously! Those left will pick up extra work. As someone who has worked in the NHS for almost 30 years, I am fed up of the constant cost cutting, yet they still expect a high quality service. Many of us are already doing the jobs of more than one person (and taking on the extra stresses). Many departments are understaffed.

My manager told us yesterday that we’d saved ‘x’ amount of money, as a department, over the last year. So, our budget for next year has been cut - to less than what we’d spent (even though we’d managed to save money). We can’t recruit any extra staff so desperately needed. Staff go off sick because they end up doing too much. Quality deteriorates as people rush.

But yet, our country seems to have plenty of money available for other things…

I am seriously fed up of working in the NHS.

There are no band 8 senior nurses.

And you can’t just allocate whatever number of bands you want to a shift so let’s stop with this nonsense please.

Also would refute the claim above about a manger who WFH doing nothing on a six figure salary - there are no managers in the NHS at this salary !

@ByQuaintAzureWasp Sure, but as @WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther Just said, her ward has 5 managers 😂😂 5?! That’s what I was referring to. Surely 5 is more than needed? I wasn’t saying managers weren’t needed, i said there’s too many of them.

and yes, I have been a manager previously

Edited

Depends how big the department is, if it is a department of 5 then clearly 5 managers is too many, who do they manage. If it is a department of 500 then 5 managers is probably pretty good.

Partially true, but without the admin staff they’d soon run out of patients to treat!

Without HR they'd soon run out of nurses, doctors, physios, cleaners etc etc etc as who would do the recruiting, the DBS checking etc.

I’m curious as to how you think this will work?

are consultants now going to have to answer all calls from patients themselves? Arrange all their own clinics and appointments? Even while operating?

Its amazing how little people understand.

Yes there are. You only have to Google 'NHS managers on over £100,000 to find multiple articles on this. And some of them are at the worst performing trusts

Yes, but what happens to the work they did? They pass it down to everyone else.

It's no surprise that the busiest place in my small hospital is the staff room. Many highly paid managers spend 15 minutes an hour making tea and chatting and another 10 minutes an hour in the toilet pissing it back out again and doom scrolling on the phone.

Far too top heavy.

The NHS would function more efficiently if it had the stones to cut the management down to the bare minimum and recruit more frontline staff. Get rid of the spreadsheet cranks that have not even the most tenuous link to healthcare and it will noticeably improve.

Okay, who’s going to book patients in for surgery?

arrange their pre-assessments?

arrange their clinic appointments?

book them into the ward? Ensure their notes get to the theatre on time?

The managers that are the box-tickers, the performance-assessors, the ones obsessed with thinking up new convoluted processes to make things more efficient but in reality waste so much more time, the ones that insist on lengthy meetings about pretty much nothing.... I could go on. They're the managers. The ones that book things are the booking team.

Well us “spreadsheet cranks” are the ones doing the booking and the ones making all These things happen.

Okay. I'm not taking back what I said. I work in software. My line manager is a spreadsheet crank and they're about as competent with computers as an Amish elder. And no, I'm not saying you personally are incompetent at what you do. Too many managers is a very well known issue in the NHS.

HostaCentral · 12/11/2025 13:00

This is for "NHS England", not for individual trusts. It is part of the restructuring, which was brought in by Lansbury years ago. It is effectively taking out a level of oversight, with that being pushed both up to government level, and down to local level.

TheignT · 12/11/2025 13:00

If you're doing all that timing of many managers do you ever get any actual work done?

whatawalley · 12/11/2025 13:02

The NHS needs to make cuts and find efficiencies. It's on its knees.

Except that the actual figures show that the NHS is in fact under managed.

It is mismanaged.

Londonmummy66 · 12/11/2025 14:13

Well last weeks tribunal demonstrated that there are at least 4 too many managers in the HR department at Darlington so maybe that would be a good place to start looking.

I could see an online booking system being used for appointments, like my dentist uses. Maybe they will just reduce secretaries rather than get rid as like others have said there’s much more to their role.

Wonder if they would be made to pay a deposit that they don't get back if they no show!

I wonder how much unsociable hour pay costs the NHS and should it still stand. I know when shops started opening on Sundays I got double pay but that doesn't happen anymore it seems to be just another day.

It's a nice perk for NHS staff working night shifts and weekends in the NHS but probably a costly one.

AI probably, as much as I hate the fact thousands of people are being laid off in a very difficult job market.

Notmymarmosets · 12/11/2025 23:24

One of our band 8s who has been offered redundancy is a former highly skilled PAM who is now a team of one who overseas the whole of the degree apprenticeships over whole of the Trust. If she accepts redundancy, they might as well close each and every program, as no other bugger is going to assimilate this enormous amount of work.
