NHS staff cuts

Well, this is going to go down well with NHS staff. In an already understaffed NHS they decide to go ahead with loads of job cuts. Ok, maybe just management but, seriously! Those left will pick up extra work. As someone who has worked in the NHS for almost 30 years, I am fed up of the constant cost cutting, yet they still expect a high quality service. Many of us are already doing the jobs of more than one person (and taking on the extra stresses). Many departments are understaffed.

My manager told us yesterday that we’d saved ‘x’ amount of money, as a department, over the last year. So, our budget for next year has been cut - to less than what we’d spent (even though we’d managed to save money). We can’t recruit any extra staff so desperately needed. Staff go off sick because they end up doing too much. Quality deteriorates as people rush.

But yet, our country seems to have plenty of money available for other things…

I am seriously fed up of working in the NHS.

our trust is offering mars for band 8 only.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2025 06:18

There far too many managers l, so if their jobs are cut, then thats good I think!! They need more hands on staff on the wards.

Yes, but what happens to the work they did? They pass it down to everyone else.

@HamptonCourtPrincessAs I said, there’s far too many managers… do we really need yet another report about something or other??

Actually there’s less managers than any other healthcare model in Europe and we’re all on our knees then constantly told by the public we’re not needed. Doctors and nurses are great but can’t run depts, plan new service roll outs and keep track of all the targets, understand where we’re not meeting them and develop plans etc. we work with doctors and nurses to do these things, of course, but ime they’re not interested in leading this stuff because they want to get on with being a nurse or doctor.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2025 06:24

@TeenLifeMum are you worried about redundancy?

If the department had saved money, in any other world that would be seen as a good thing…but not the NHS which seems to exist like the BBC in a world where unlimited ‘funding’ is demanded.
Logically, if a department has saved money then of course the budget is reduced because they didn’t need the extra. The managers should be congratulated of not following the usual public sector ploy of spending up to the budget regardless of whether is needed.
Would be even better to see bonuses awarded for cutting spending.
We need more people with a ‘saving’ rather than ‘spending’ mentality.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 12/11/2025 06:27

Our trust has already done mars for all staff, but refused for some lower bands & certain departments. Staff that leaves isn't replaced if we can't recruit within the trust (bonkers!) So yes, next step is redundancy. This has been going on since the beginning of the year. I am surprised this hasn't been picked up earlier, but then I think it's a head in the sand situation when it comes to the state of the NHS.

As someone who works in the NHS, I agree. My little department has 5 managers. 5!

You have probably never been a manager in a public sector organisation. Who do you think ensures all if the background stuff is done and that it's all recorded as it needs to be to meet legislation ... cleaning, facilities, laundry, payroll, HR, records, IT, training, finance. Its false economy having doctors and nurses doing this stuff.

Yes, but it’s affecting the service we can provide for the next financial year. Our suppliers, for example, are putting up their prices in line with inflation. Our budget has been cut rather than increased in line with inflation. Our manager seriously looked worried.

Tbh my NHS truat can do with less managers but the cuts in nurses and doctors are ridiculous. NHS is broken. And I don't run faster anymore. 150% work load is enough, thank you.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2025 06:32

@ByQuaintAzureWasp Sure, but as @WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther Just said, her ward has 5 managers 😂😂 5?! That’s what I was referring to. Surely 5 is more than needed? I wasn’t saying managers weren’t needed, i said there’s too many of them.

and yes, I have been a manager previously

I agree. I think a lot of people don’t see what NHS managers do. They are probably one of the higher stressed groups in the NHS due to sheer workload and pressure.

Our trust is looking at staff. We can’t recruit into posts. So if someone leaves the work gets split amongst fewer staff.

I come under the manager title and I am included in the review. But my role is about education and making sure future staff are equipped to do their job. Planning, bidding for grants and ensuring we have a whole programme of things staff can access.

I actually bring in income that pays for my team, courses we buy in and much more. But we have been told the team may cease to exist and so will the income they will miss.

ironically they keep saying retention is good in nhs. That’s causes there are no jobs to go to.

I’m not even clinical! I’m in an admin role.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2025 06:24

@TeenLifeMum are you worried about redundancy?

I’m b7 so I don’t think I’m at risk and we restructured and had to interview for our jobs in 2023 so I’m hoping I’m safe…. also a fairly specialist role, but who knows. I just get frustrated with the narrative about managers. All those very quick changes that happened in hospitals through Covid did so because of managers. I honestly work with 90% amazing managers. This year I’ve been heavily involved in the cancer self referrals, meaning you don’t need your gp if you have symptoms. That was a very small part of my crazy busy job, but just an example. Would you prefer doctors were doing that?

Who will do the management roles? Clinical staff will be expected to cover it on top of their clinical work.

Gingernessy · 12/11/2025 06:37

HamptonCourtPrincess · 12/11/2025 06:19

Yes, but what happens to the work they did? They pass it down to everyone else.

Aren't we always told NHS managers don't do any work.
When did they become so productive?
All an exercise for the government telling us it can't be free anymore and we need to pay a levy.

Constant pointless meetings?

Emails that waffle on for paragraphs about corporate shit that matters to no-one?

Maybe they'll streamline working practices as a result. If not, make your voice heard and make it happen!

It sounds like an improvement to me.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2025 06:39

@BlushingmI doubt that…. There’s not even enough time to do the clinical work.

EleanorReally · 12/11/2025 06:41

management also give work to others in order to collect data for some reason or another
they just love spread sheets
