newborn IVF twin girls abandoned at hospital because they're not boys.

shocking

"The husband then asked how soon it would be before his wife was fit enough to fly out again for further IVF in the hope of getting a boy to continue the
family name.".

They should bloody well have their passports taken away to prevent them flying out to have any further treatment. After they've been charged with abandonment that is.

Could do. Is sex determined at the 20 week scan or can you determine it before that? I've forgotten!

mumoftwo37 · 29/05/2008 08:40

My God WTF! I think the parents should be prosecuted- but from what it seems of them those little girls will probably be better off without them as long as they are adopted together.

laura032004 · 29/05/2008 08:40

I didn't think you could get away with that sort of thing. Obviously a bit naive. What is the earliest you can find out the sex by scan (you can do it with an amnio at 12w can't you?)

MrsTittleMouse · 29/05/2008 08:41

You can determine sex before 20 weeks, but it's less reliable.

RubberDuck · 29/05/2008 08:52

Or maybe the IVF clinic told them they had selected for boys. We really don't know enough about this story - it even sounds like the hospital in question didn't know who the parents are given that they're asking if anyone knows anything to contact police.

If you have CVS, you can get a definite indication of sex as early as 12-14 weeks. I'm sure that private CVSs are available. So it rather begs the question of why they didn't take steps to find out the sex earlier.

misdee · 29/05/2008 08:58

those poor babies.

the local hospital here had a policy of not telling you the sex of the baby as there had been times whe baby girls were aborted as they were the wrong sex. i'm not sure if thats still in place as i had my ther two girls at a different hospital.

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 09:04

Upwind , I don't think that would be a problem. The parents will die when he's about 5 and they'll be raised by their first cousin twice removed as the closest living relative or he'll end up carrying the family name in a children's home.

RubberDuck they used to not tell people, but they seem to be doing so more these days. I live in Birmingham where there is a high ethnic population and they are happy to tell. Maybe if they were worried they would say "sorry, I can't get a close enough look"? I had to find out what I was having because boys in TD's family can have a problem that isn't picked up on the scan but can cause problems before birth and may need an op straight away.

LittleBella you can sometimes tell at 14 weeks, but the 20 week scan is the first time they will let you know because it's not reliable. My daughter was born alive before the 20 week scan (I said to the MW "can you let antenatal know I'm here so won't be coming for my 20 week scan" so you can probably guess my feelings on the 24 week debate).

laura032004 I think you could find out any time you could amniotic fluid out because it carries the DNA. There's actually a blood test you can do that shows the sex of the baby from 8 weeks.

mumoftwo37 they won't split them up anymore. Even when a parent who's children have been adopted loses another child the adopters get first refusal as they believe it's very important for children to grow up with their siblings. There would have to be reasons why they didn't keep them together and you wouldn't have that with babies.

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 09:06

The hospital haven't asked people to contact the police.

Do you know who the couple are? Or do you work at the hospital?Call the newsdesk on 0207 782 4100

well hopefully at 59 she won't find it that easy to get pregnant again even with IVF so fingers they don't get a second chance at screwing some poor childs life up.

I too hope they are prosecuted though what for I'm not sure.

MrsTittleMouse · 29/05/2008 09:15

Oh of course, I had forgotten about CVS. Even more weird that she chose to carry them to full term and deliver them (no mean feat at her age).

Oliveoil · 29/05/2008 09:16

so so sad

poor babies

I wonder if the mother is being put under pressure from her husband/family and is quietly sobbing somewhere and wants her children?

Upwind · 29/05/2008 09:19

OO, I guess if there was any indication of that, hospital staff would have intervened.

RubberDuck · 29/05/2008 09:22

TinkerbellesMum: doh - that'll teach me to skim read. So it's the paper trying to dig more dirt. Fair enough.

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 09:24

lol RubberDuck of course!

Comment on The Wright Stuff "I would love to put them in a room with a couple who've been trying for years, lock them in and let them get on with it!"

Love it!

IndigoMoon · 29/05/2008 09:25

that is an uter disgrace and another story about this country which makes me very very sad.

NorthernLurker · 29/05/2008 09:27

If true it's a shocking story but the one thing that is certain is that these little girls will be found a home together where they are so much loved and wanted. Somebody's dream is going to come true and although their biological parents are plainly deeply flawed they will always have each other.

Oliveoil · 29/05/2008 09:28

well hopefully they will be adopted and loved

no point them going to a family that views females as inferior

QuintessentialShadows · 29/05/2008 09:28

I dont know where her pregnancy was followed up, in India or in the UK, but if in the UK they wont reveal the gender of babies to people of asian origin for this very reason.

TinkerbellesMum · 29/05/2008 09:51

Oliveoil I think that a family who is desperate enough to adopt will probably be grateful to have children and will take girls. It comes back to the comment on the MW show this morning

Kewcumber · 29/05/2008 09:56

girls are way, way more popular with adopters.

Kewcumber · 29/05/2008 09:58

and if they are of indian heritage - they may be a problme to place as SS will expect them to go to a family with the same ethnicity and there aren't necessaroy so many non-white adopters out there.

Though I can beleive they;d have too much probablem placing very small babies - they will go into foster care for some time until it's decied that the parents defintely don;t want them, parents will not be able (legally) to relinquich their rights until the girls are 6 weeks old.

IllegallyBrunette · 29/05/2008 09:59

Blimey, I am totally speechless.

QuintessentialShadows · 29/05/2008 10:00

I would want them.
