I think the second scan should be at 18 weeks and abortion should only be available up to 20 weeks in extreme circumstances. No excuse for 24 weeks imho.

Not sure if you've seen it, but very comprehensive discussion of this topic here

Twinkie1 · 21/05/2008 16:04

Yep am disgusted that it has not been changed.

OverMyDeadBody · 21/05/2008 16:07

Really? You're disgusted? What about a woman's right to have a choice?

NotABanana · 21/05/2008 16:09

Thanks LMD.

Why do you feel let down? How is it any of your business?

NotABanana · 21/05/2008 16:09

Choice - fine just why do you need so long to make your mind up?

A very small percentage (I think less than 2%) of abortions are carried out at 24 weeks or more, mostly because of foetal abnormalities or because of the mother's health. The vast majority of abortions are done under 12 weeks.

beaniesteve · 21/05/2008 16:12

In answer to why you might need that long... some abnormalities/health problems do not show up until after the 20 week scan.

OverMyDeadBody · 21/05/2008 16:13

Some people don't find out they are pregnant till quite far gone NAB, they should still have the choice surely?

Just don't see why anyone would feel let down or disgusted for other people's decisions about their private lives.

ephrinedaily · 21/05/2008 16:14

Some people don't find out until late, others have health issues - I really don't know and I hope to god I'm never in the position of having to make that choice. Doesn't mean its any of my or your business to stop other people from making that choice. Still don't understand why you feel personally 'let down'. Let it lie amd stop trying to make people feel bad.

artichokes · 21/05/2008 16:14

You cannot have the second scan at 18 weeks - the baby is not developed enough for all abnormalities to show.

OverMyDeadBody · 21/05/2008 16:15

beanie I don't think abortions on health/abnormality grounds where affected by this. The other thread explains it better.

Piffle · 21/05/2008 16:21

what business is it of mine to be disgusted
I can only control my own limits on abortion within my body and life.
I would never dream of inflicting my views on another womans body.
Not that my views are noted as being for or against an upper limit...
they are exactly that
my own views

Oliviasmum74 · 21/05/2008 16:23

I think that everyone should have the right to choose

artichokes · 21/05/2008 16:30

I do not feel at all let down. I do not want MPs deciding what women can do with their bodies. They only people qualified to make that decision are the woman concerned and her medical team. The law should be flexible so the best decision can be made in each individual circumstance.

yurt1 · 21/05/2008 16:31

I just wish they'd sort out the 'ok to terminate for disability at 40 weeks' law. That one does make me feel violently ill.

meemar · 21/05/2008 16:33

The reason most MPs voted against a reduction was because scientific evidence surrounding viability has not changed since 1990 when the limit was reduced from 28 weeks.

I think on that basis it was a sensible outcome.

harleyd · 21/05/2008 16:36

why the hell would you feel let down?
its none of your goddamn business what any other woman does
you can decide whats right for you, not whats right for anyone else
and who the hell gives you the right to judge anyone on their decision to have a termination at whatever stage

Vivace · 21/05/2008 16:37

I think if campaigner were at all serious about reducing later abortions, they would support free, fast access to abortion without the need for a second signature up to 12 or 15 weeks. At the moment women who find out late are often really messed about, delaying everything. They don't because they oppose all abortion and would like that choice completely taken away from women.

kaz33 · 21/05/2008 16:39

I am actually proud that our parliament debated the issue without falling to the anti abortion league and saw it as what it was - an attack on abortion and a womans right to choose.

Twinkie1 · 21/05/2008 16:40

IMO you are killing a baby - I am a Catholic and the right to life starts at conception for me.

Tortington · 21/05/2008 16:41

interested in a genuine discussion rather than fishwifing.

think that there should be free and greater access earlier and that the limit should be lowered.

Vivace · 21/05/2008 16:42

I am pro-choice and pro leaving things as they are, but I think of course people have a right to discuss what they strongly see as a moral issue concerning two people, one of them a baby, even if it doesn't directly affect them.

NotABanana · 21/05/2008 17:15

I have just posted my thoughts and appreciate the answers. I didn't realise it isn't until 20 weeks that some abnomalities show up.

OP posts:
NotABanana · 21/05/2008 17:16

I felt let down as I felt that most people would want the limit lowered. I am also not trying to make people feel bad so resent that accusation. I am entitled to post my thoughts as much as anyone.
