BPA and Phthalates in baby bottles

2boysnamedR · 18/05/2008 23:17

I was wondering how many other mums are worried enought to change their baby bottles if they contain BPA / Phthalates? I have a science degree and I know they are in nearly everything so you can't avoid them totally - like any risk in life. Has anyone changed their bottles and if so to what brand? I think MAM are BPA free and some Nuby are as well. Mind you I have already been using my current BPA loaded brand since ds1 was born. My science head says not too worry as nothing is totally safe but my mummy head says I should reduce the risk

There is a lot of research to say that phthalates are NOT good for babies and that babies shouldn't be exposed to phthalate/BPA containing bottles. There are some green alternatives, but they are expensive.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 19/05/2008 08:44

what does your dad actually do for the plastics company, hedgewitch?

tbh, asking a plastics company or phillips avent about bpa/phthalates is like asking a formula company if there is inherent risks in using their products.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/05/2008 10:34

What about all the rattles/teethers that they chew on, this topic has been overdone on here and nothing can really be said.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/05/2008 10:35

AND DON'T LET THIS DESCEND INTO A BOTTLE/BREAST ARGUEMENT IT IS NOT RELEVANT

cupsoftea · 19/05/2008 10:36

what about plastic toys as well?

cupsoftea, WWF say "There is a temporary EU ban on using phthalates in toys intended to be sucked by children under three, but other toys continue to contain such chemicals."

BrummieOnTheRun · 19/05/2008 11:08

2 boys, just keep an eye on the teats and bottles. if they are scratched or cracked, throw them away.

Prada - unfortunately no one can turn this into a breast vs bottle debate as breastmilk samples have been widely found to be contaminated too.

talilac · 19/05/2008 11:15

I went for the Green Baby glass ones for similar reasons to the OP. Too late for DD1 but DD2 is now having expressed from bottles and I didnt want to have to worry about it..

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/05/2008 11:26

talilac so what about when they want to crawl off with a bottle and drink from it as and when? you have to supervise closely incase it breaks?

Rod, back, precious, spring to mind.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/05/2008 11:28

I have ordered some of these, they also do glass bottles.

talilac · 19/05/2008 11:30

Hey DWP, we've done the dropping it from height onto concrete thing and they didnt shatter, so no not particularly precious. Got them on a Mnetter recommendation, apparently they lasted really well.

Have to admit also I never really let DD1 wander around with her bottle. She only had bottles as part of the pre nap / bed routine (ie cuddled up) and had a beaker then a cup for the rest of the day.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/05/2008 11:52

In which case you seem like a Mumzilla and we must have nothing in common.

2boysnamedR · 19/05/2008 12:26

Thanks all. I am using Avent at the moment. I don't think I am going to overly panic but I will replace with a BPA free brand when they need replacing which will be soon for some of them. My mate has ordered the born free so will await her review! But I can't tell from the website if they are Phthalate free as well? Still it would be easyer to buy a high street brand like MAM as they are easy to get hold of / buy teats for. I am not going to worry too much as it seems all the trainer cups contain it too. You can't completly avoid them.

I still can't figure out what he actually does for the company, hedgewitch. I take it he works for a plastics company which supplies avent with plastics. There are lots of different jobs descriptions in a plastic company though. Sorry for being a pedant. Just that i have a mate who works for a major chemical company supplying raw materials to product manufacturers and can talk quite intelligently about 'stuff' till kingdom come, he is actually employed a salesman. It isn't really important to me or the discussion if you want to answer tbh, but when someone says something along the lines of X is a such and such so X should know, then I believe that we should know exactly what X does for a living to determine whether I would consider taking their word for it.

I don't disagree that avent bottles conform to all the safety standards of major western countries.

It just does not mean to me that the plastics they are using is the safest they can be using.

at being described by DWP as a Mumzilla. Are you bored and trying to start an argument? Why on earth should other peoples choices regarding their DC bother you? Surely you are just like me - you read the evidence, and then make up your own mind about what to do.

In this case, I'm on the fence as to whether there is a risk. So I decided that rather than worry about it, I'd buy non plastic bottles. I don't think I would have replaced bottles but I needed new ones.

There is a good list of what contains what here: safemama.com/2007/11/22/bpa-free-bottle-and-sippy-cup-cheat-sheet/

kiskideesameanoldmother · 19/05/2008 14:45

coming from DWP, being called a Mumzilla is a compliment. she frequently drops by different threads to make odious remarks.

I was not implying he was as salesman HW, which is why I asked for clarification...As i said, he could be anyone.

Still, if his customers are not asking questions about the hormonal components of his products, he may not be fully up to date of the current research which are drawing doubts about its safety.

but, since you trust his opinion more because of who he says he is, more power to you.

From where I and other mums are sitting, some may prefer to look at the guidelines set by the gov'ts of Canada and Japan have implemented and ask the question, 'why is our gov't and the EU not seemingly as interested in this material?' My cynical fear is that since our gov't drags its feet on so many things with infant nutrition that this is another one.

The funny thing is, that Polypropylene is as ubiquitous and cheap as polycarbonate for making goods. PP has fallen out of fashion for making bottles eventhough it is as durable and it doesn't have hormone disrupters. It is all about marketing at one point in time, i suspect that PC has become the common for baby's bottles. As PC looks like glass but PP doesn't.

TheDevilWearsPenneys · 19/05/2008 14:59

Oh for gods sake, can you not take a joke? If not you are in need mumzillas.

No need for the attack on me though kiswhatnotbullshitzee.

Had you seen any of my threads and actually known about me on mumsnet recently you'd know I wouldn't ever 'attack' anyone for no reason.

TheDevilWearsPenneys · 19/05/2008 15:00

'in need' should have read 'indeed'. But, poetic license, and it seems poetic.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 19/05/2008 15:15

DWP, are you now experiencing a humour failure?

or is that a bee in your bonnet?

err, yes, i have seen other people say the same kind of thing to as talia has, more than once, wrt your, um, humourous remarks. i read loads but not necessarily post.

TheDevilWearsPenneys · 19/05/2008 15:19

Ahem, bitch, I thought my last post on here was rather funny.

Point me to somewhere where I have offended someone and not grovelled at their knees apologising if I 'genuinely ' upset them and I'll answer for it.

No need to slander.
