Blimey, his poor mother, losing both her sons to ruddy motorbikes.

Yup. I know people love their bikes, but when someone's brother has already been killed, you'd think they'd give up.

of course it's sad.

but reality is that if you partake in these activities then you do so in the knowledge that there's a good chance you're going to die doing so.

Given his brother was killed and he already had had one serious accident he was probably well aware that the next time he wouldn't be so lucky. Nothing wrong with saying that imo.

MrsBoo · 16/05/2008 10:13

The Dunlop brothers are like sporting legends here. They are/were held in the same high esteeem as George Best.
I really cant believe it.

cadelaide · 16/05/2008 10:13

That's the thing with motor racing though isn't it, there's always a strong possibility of death?

DPs into F1, and every time a driver dies in an "incident" (mustn't call it a crash, oh no) my immediate reaction is "bloody fool"

Always sad though, no matter what. Ultimately I have respect for their ability and fearlessness.

My brother lives there and is at this this week.

wannaBe · 16/05/2008 10:17

it can be sad and a waste of life at the same time.

These sports are addictive, it's the adrenallin rush of the race but also the danger. When you become a racing driver you know there's a better than average chance you're going to die. Only a fool would think otherwise, and given his brother had died and he had been seriously injured he knew what he was up against, but he went ahead and did it anyway.

I imagine he died doing what he loved best, but it's still a shame for the family he has left behind.

ShinyPinkShoes · 16/05/2008 10:17

I hate them

And yes after losing your brother in a crash, it's fair to assume you'd not want to risk your own life that way too.

DH refers to bikers as 'organ donors in transit'

Marina · 16/05/2008 11:32

a world of tragedy in that pragmatic little sentence Highlander
My mum's favourite cousin (she had a shocking childhood and he was pretty much everything to her) was killed at the TT in his 20s . Before that mum was quite a keen circuit-goer but she still hates bikes with a passion 50 years on

pooka · 16/05/2008 11:40

DH had a fast bike when we first got together. Like ridiculously fast. I used to ride pillion. Felt invincible and daring.

He sold it when we bought a place. Then bought one just before dd was born. Never really had the time to go on it, and I refused to after dd was born. He came off at slow speed (so was fine, bike a bit scraped on fairing) and sold it asap. Not worth it.

Is terribly sad for the family.
