I havent saw the news, but i did see that they were show it on a screen and i just thought OMG, riots..surely the people in charge realised this? NOT that its thier fault but a bit of foresight

CombustibleLemon · 15/05/2008 22:55

Ladymariner, was citing the various excuses given over the past 24hrs. Of course it was the fault of those pathetic 'fans'.

ladymariner · 15/05/2008 22:57

Oh sorry, C, I'm being thick, thought you were serious
SORRY!!!!!

CombustibleLemon · 15/05/2008 22:59

I think that the arrangements for the big screens were made before they knew Rangers would be involved. They probably should have cancelled them once they got through to the final, though I am in no way blaming the council for this. I doubt that UEFA would have allowed them to change the arrangements anyway.

CombustibleLemon · 15/05/2008 23:01

It's ok Ladymariner, I should've put a for clarity.

Pan · 15/05/2008 23:07

woud be really curious as to how Rangers can quite carelessly blame anyone else whe nthe film footage shows men in Rangers attire runing round the place causing mayhem? Is this a feature of the fear of the SFA? i.e. we aren't accountable in Scotland so we won't be anywhere else.

CombustibleLemon · 15/05/2008 23:10

Denial, not just a river in Egypt apparently.

Pan · 15/05/2008 23:41

cc- take your point, BUT Manchester City Centre is really quite compact. It's a brisk stroll of about 15 mins or so from one end of the 'centre' to the other.
In order to 'cater' for 150,000 visitors for one night then it would have to entirely close down. No traffic, no commuters, no shopping (!), no nothing but making a thoroughfare for 'visitors' milling around.
It CAN accommodate thousands of people - we did the Commonwealth Games, European Cup final, we have a Gay Mardi Gra every year with a really carnival atmosphere with massive attendances. No city could have anticipated having 150,000 folks descend, many of them utterly legless and openly aggressive, and then have a major incident with one of the prime sites.

I still do find it hard to believe that they opened bars for business at 10am. Greedy fuckwit behaviour, but no excuse for what happened.

pinkyminky · 15/05/2008 23:41

I think it's a real shame. There have been some really great big screen events here in Manchester, without this kind of behaviour.
Why is it that when these things happen they are never 'real football fans'? When else does this happen other than at football matches?

Pan · 15/05/2008 23:45

Exactement pinky - now me and two buddies can't go the Albert Square on Wednesday to see the game in our home town. It's go to a pub or stay at home. So shit.

pinkyminky · 15/05/2008 23:55

It does feel like we are being punished for someone else's crimes.

Quattrocento · 16/05/2008 00:30

They were drinking at 9. I know because I had the misfortune to land in Mcr yesterday. I'm sure it's a lovely city normally, but for someone who had never even heard of the UEFA cup much less that it was being played there, it was a bit of a culture shock. Imagine walking into a city full of dodgy-looking blokes blue clutching flags.... was a nightmare

pinkyminky · 16/05/2008 00:42

It's pretty good city, yes. Thedy were noothing to do with Manchester- we merely hosted this debacle!

pinkyminky · 16/05/2008 00:43

oh gawd my typing- i need sleep!
