just heard this on the news in the car. the aa are demanding an explanation.

i know we could (nearly) all cut down on how much we use our cars and use public transport more often but surely a rise like this is going to bump up bus fares.

not to mention how much more food prices will rises because transport costs will have risen. between this and the latest gas/elec price rises we will be living on beans on toast by christmas.

My Dad is a lorry driver (owner driver) and it's actually cheaper for him to get the ferry to Belgium and fill the lorry over there than it is to put Diesel in over here!! Total Madness!!!!

expatinscotland · 16/05/2008 17:01

another nail in the coffin for those of us hanging on in rural areas.

well, sorry, but we won't be driven out, come hell or high water.

this is our home and so somehow, we'll manage. others did before us and things were far, far worse.

but i for one certainly won't be voting Labour.

I want a bike with one of those trailer things on the back, but don't have the money to do a lump sum to buy it, even though it would save me the money in the long run.

There is no way DD could cycle to school by herself, and it is the only way I could do it with the two of them

Flame · 16/05/2008 17:08

(as in on her own bike - she is still with stabilisers and will be for years at this rate!)

spugs · 16/05/2008 17:34

weve got one of those flame its great, dd1 who is 7 rides her bike to school fairly often dh goes on his with her. the problem with the trailer is that they cant go on it till there one or i would use it when i have all 3 kids by myself. i use the car when dh is at work as it would take 1 hr to get to school and dd2s legs would not hold out. if i could use the trailer we could all go using that. getting squashed by a car does worry me a bit as well though

kerryk · 16/05/2008 18:13

Just paid 1.29 a litre for diesel, a rise of 20 p since my last fill up. This is expensive cos it is a small local garage.I know it could be up to 20p cheaper at the big petrol stations but they are 20 miles away. Walking and biking everywhere possible but public transport is hopeless.
Riven - aren't there any grants for your bike thingy? There used to be a book in libraries listing all sorts of trusts that you could apply to for stuff like that. Can't remember what it was called though.

"DH said yeah, cride oil was £100 dollars a barrel @ Xmas, now £127 dollars a barrel, so 30% increase makes sense."

Noooo, it makes no sense at all - the cost of oil makes up less than 25% (IIRC) of the cost of a litre, the rest is VAT and duty and any-other-tax-you-can-think-of plus huuuuuge profits for the oil companies , so a 27% increase in oil should only mean a 7% increase on a litre, maximum. And the price has now stopped rising. The bastards are profiteering (for a change )

mommajools · 16/05/2008 22:49

kerryk - unleaded in France was around 1.5 euros last month.

WendyWeber · 16/05/2008 22:56

diesel was available at 1.25 in France last month (had to shop around) - a good bit chepaer than here even at current exchange rates.

AMAZINWOMAN · 17/05/2008 07:37

Part of the reason petrol prices are so high, is the AWFUL tax on it. I think it is somewhere between 50 and 70%

The goverment could easily reduce tax on it, and look for revenue from other ways. but they won't

cremolafoam · 17/05/2008 07:55

we have 110.09 here in supermarkets, but i saw an independent garage in a rural area yesterday at 137.00.
nearly crashed the car when i saw that.

Theonly way is to get your 5p off voucher from the supermarket.essential journeys only in this house.

pretty dire all round.

Lilliput · 17/05/2008 08:06

it's worth having a look at petrolprices.com there is a huge difference in prices.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 17/05/2008 09:49

amazin - at the end of last year when petrol was a measley 95p per litre, almost 64p of it was tax.

I don't have the current figures so I don't know whether we've had an equal hike in oil and tax or if it's the oil companies alone pushing the price up. Both, I suspect.

WendyWeber · 17/05/2008 10:32

When the price of oil goes up, the tax on it goes up too (QED)

WendyWeber · 17/05/2008 10:36

read it and weep

(aa website - monthly petrol prices since 2000)

Poohbah · 17/05/2008 16:52

Diesel is 1.29 per litre at my local station!!! It's gone up 3p since last week!!!

There is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT where I live so actually I'm f**D!

solo · 17/05/2008 17:03

Seems to go up daily...

BouncingTurtle · 17/05/2008 17:07

Yep, agree doesn't seem to be an end to the price rises.
That's why when I go back to work after m/l I'll be looking for another job closer to home - I have a 60 mile round trip to work every day to my current job.

Gobbledigook · 17/05/2008 17:12

Looks like I'll be walking the school run more often! Especially as my car is not really a nippy about town car and is very thirsty.

Just coincides with ds3 starting school so that it's actually possible - with the locations of school and nursery at the minute there is no way I can walk and get to both on time - come September and the boys are all going to one place I can actually do it.

Miggsie · 17/05/2008 17:15

...well I am not able to drive so finally I am "lucky" as opposed to all these years when it's been "you poor thing having to buy a house near public transport" etc.

Mind you DH drives to work...he might suddenly find himself in touch with his legs again (only 8 miles).
DD school is walking distance because I can't drive...I suppose having a crippling joint problem would one day have a silver lining, ha ha...but my dad and brother live in bugaboo nowhere land so dad has bought a hybrid, he is very pleased with it.

Terrible for people on low incomes. It is shocking how dependent we are on oil...which we don't have any of so we have to rely on other coutries to sell it to us.
