just heard this on the news in the car. the aa are demanding an explanation.

i know we could (nearly) all cut down on how much we use our cars and use public transport more often but surely a rise like this is going to bump up bus fares.

not to mention how much more food prices will rises because transport costs will have risen. between this and the latest gas/elec price rises we will be living on beans on toast by christmas.

AMAZINWOMAN · 15/05/2008 17:56

Public transport will also rise in price too, if fuel prices increase. taking a family out using public transport is SOO expensive. In London, it is free, so why not in all of the country?

If politicians are serious about using public transport, then they should make is cheaper.

MetalMummy · 15/05/2008 20:38

Dh was speechless yesterday when he went to fill up and diesel had gone up 4p a litre in 2days, it's now 123.9p a litre round here. Unleaded is still 110.9p a litre.
If it carries on we won't be able to run the car, but he needs it to get to work because there is no public transport at the time he goes to work.

Wallace · 15/05/2008 20:44

Think it will be sooner than that It is going up so fast. Not a week goes by with out the prices going up.At the moment:

petrol - 114.9
diesel - 126.9

or at least it was last time I filled up...

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/05/2008 20:56

Its worrying. I'm just considering accepting taking a job 30miles away but the thought of rising petrol costs is one of my "cons" on my list of pros and cons re the job.

I'm just glad I have a small 1ltr car.

I was shocked yesterday - filled up at a shell station on the southbound A1 near biggleswade (?) - diesel was £1.30 per litre - I am sure recelty it was £1.00. DH said yeah, cride oil was £100 dollars a barrel @ Xmas, now £127 dollars a barrel, so 30% increase makes sense.
But in any case, we ain't seen nuthin' yet - peak oli is done son we had better just get usd to it cut down as the only alternative is to grow biofules and increase world starvation

TigerFeet · 16/05/2008 12:29

if unleaded will get to £1.50 what will happen to diesel prices? It's rapidly reaching the point where it's no longer cheaper to run a diesel car.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2008 12:31

have paid £1.30 for a litre of diesel around here - whilst Grangemouth was on strike.

trouble is, any bus that runs around in this region is usually diesel.

schneebly · 16/05/2008 12:32

lpg conversion here I come!

KayHarker · 16/05/2008 12:45

pmsl @ MrsGuyOfGisbourne's cheerful optimism

'the only alternative is to grow biofules and increase world starvation'

I tell you, if some sorry-arse politician would actually campaign on some real, helpful public transport measures, they'd get my vote for sure. It's absolutely number one on my list of issues. Until that is sorted, the rest of it is just going to get worse. Dh can't use public transport to get to work because it's so shonky that it would take him hours to get to work, and anyway, at the time he would need to set off, there are no buses anyway. We bought a second car - a teensy, weensy one that doesn't drink like the Volvo, for him to use for work, but he would be happy to use PT if it was possible.

oooo

TigerFeet · 16/05/2008 12:52

God I wish I could ditch my car

I have had two (count 'em) break down on me in the last week

And the farking things cost a fortune to run

Impossible out here in the sticks though

expatinscotland · 16/05/2008 12:52

DH just had to put new tires on his car.

About £400.

TigerFeet · 16/05/2008 12:57

The first explosion last week is going to cost us £1K +

we are going to get the car fixed and then sell it

thankfully dh got a new car recently and we hadn't sold the "spare" one yet so I am using it, but it too has now broken down

I am at work and if the garage can't fix it today I am up shit creek

Then my Mum says "ooh you are so lucky to have a car" and I say "actually you are lucky to live in a town with a decent bus service so you can get anywhere you need to without having to spend thousands on keeping a car on the road"

Oh it makes me seethe [rant]

tortoiseSHELL · 16/05/2008 12:58

The petrol and food prices are REALLY scary I think. The petrol price is just out of control - spiralling. As is the price of food.

We are really struggling, and we have a good income - I can't imagine how people on lower incomes survive.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2008 12:59

Yes, DH needs his car to get to and from work.

He really does.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 16/05/2008 13:04

The man who owns the transport company we use told me yesterday that Diesel is expected to be widely £1.30 per litre within the week.

On Saturday I went into the railway station to enquire about a day return ticket to London (2 ads, 1 ch) for the Sunday. The train to London takes 1 hr 25mins.

It was £146.

Callisto · 16/05/2008 13:09

And yet you can fly to Europe for £20. Train travel is ridiculously expensive.

DaDaDa · 16/05/2008 13:18

Electric cars will be the answer, once their range increases. Or they would be if the motor maunfacturers weren't in cahoots with the oil industry.

mumoftwo37 · 16/05/2008 13:26

I think they are taking the piss really. The oil has gone up but then so has the dollar - it is 1.94 dollars to the pound at the mo but in Jan 04 it was less than 1.6 and petrol prices were nowhere near what they are now. The government should reduce the tax on the fuel.
It isn't just cars though I heard on the news gas and elec are going to be 40% more expensive in Dec than they were in Jan.
I don't know what the answer is but something is going to have to give somewhere.

Enid · 16/05/2008 13:29

food prices are really concerning me

and we have a good income

TigerFeet · 16/05/2008 13:38

Both DH and I work in the food industry for companies that supply the major retailers and the running costs for companies such as ours are skyrocketing.

The price of fuel impacts on so many basic things doesn't it?

expatinscotland · 16/05/2008 13:39

not worried so much about food prices as am now almost fully vegetarian.

it's the price of fuel to heat water and the home that concerns me.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 16/05/2008 13:43

So petrol continues to rise for the nations workforce etc whilst the aviation industry still gets huge fuel subsidies? Clearly it's much more important that a few families can use the same amount of fuel on a £50 jolly to Malaga than I use all year for work, school, shopping & faaarmmming. Fuckers.

And road tax is increasing too.

So we want this lovely little electric car. I think there is a family saloon in production too (hope it has 6 seats).

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 16/05/2008 16:51

My food shopping this week was £82 for my main shop - up at least a tenner on the basics. For ages now I've reckoned this main shop to total between £60-£70. It's all gone a bit mad, and thanks to certain 'tax reforms' my salary actually went down last month, so not only does everything cost a fortune now, I'm taking home less money than I was 4 years ago. Yes, a pay increase has been a long time (not) coming.
