Save the economy my arse. Your irresponsible spend when you could have been saving got us here. You aren't going to save us... let alone "again".

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7401846.stm

He just looks more and more out of touch with reality.

Oh and abolishing the 10p fiasco is being funded by.... loans. Don't you learn? Too many people are borrowing money they can't pay back. So what do you do? Borrow money you can't back. Oh, but I am forgetting, my money is your money so you'll just raise my taxes because of course I'm so fricken rich I can't afford to buy a house in a neighborhood with an acceptable school.

He's an arse.

The sooner we get rid of him the better.

witchandchips · 15/05/2008 12:34

much as i dislike him, he is not to blame for the credit crisis OR the recent rise in inflation

AtheneNoctua · 15/05/2008 12:37

He didn't cause the credit cruch, but he had the opportunity to put some money away when times were good and didn't. If he had we would be in a better place today. And now he is taking loans to fund his short term political game with the 10p spin around.

sawyerisyummy · 15/05/2008 12:39

they are deranged, why on earth they are so arrogant to think they can effect the economic cycle - bloody nanny state. sooner Labour are gone the better

Upwind · 15/05/2008 12:40

I wish he would just admit his mistakes and outline how he intends to move forwards. I would at least then respect is integrity. The housing market problems in the UK are partly a result of his policies as chancellor, as well as international factors.

---
"He rejected as "defeatist" a suggestion there was little he could do to influence rising oil prices and other global trends.
"I actually believe that there is a great deal you can do. Good economic decisions can help people through difficult times," he told reporters. "

He also said: "I am probably best placed to deal with these issues because of what I know about dealing with other countries on oil and other issues and we are going to keep going."
-----

But his economic decisions involved emptying our coffers during the good times!

What does he know about dealing with other countries on oil? - McCain, Greenspan and others now admit the Iraq war was about access to oil so maybe Gordon is planning more military adventures to secure access to strategic resources?

sawyerisyummy · 15/05/2008 12:41

yes, the Tory gov left the coffers in good shape, Labour under Blair benefitted and spent, spent spent on crap, ESP QUANGOS, and now they are paying the price for their horrifying lack of foresight and economic naivety

wasabipeanut · 15/05/2008 12:41

It is possible that borrowing at the moment is actually quite a good idea - one of teh ways to boost aggregate demand is via govt. spending and borrowing.

Its either genius or insanity - not quite sure which.

Agree he's an arse though - and whilst he didn't cause the economy to go tits, he certainly didn't help. Taking the credit for benign global economic conditions and claiming to have single handedly abolished the economic cycle was cheeky, so he can't complain when the cycle hits a downturn.

sawyerisyummy · 15/05/2008 12:43

it is so incredible that he is trying to alter the economic cycle to save his own skin

I mean, surely a Labour gov would welcome a fall in house prices fgs?

I give Brown 2 months more in the job

MinkyBorage · 15/05/2008 12:53

He is so unsure of himself, and even more obsessed by his own popularity than Blair. Every decision he makes is in a panic, his judgement is terrible.

expatinscotland · 15/05/2008 12:56

the credit crunch is partially a result of his party's policies, which allowed the housing market to bubble.

if he weren't so arrogant, you'd actually feel sorry for his being thick as two planks put together.

i've met Big Issue sellers with far more sense in their little fingers than he's got in his entire body.

claricebeansmum · 15/05/2008 12:59

He is reactionary not proactive. A complete nightmare. Things did not need to get this bad this quickly. the 10p fiasco and subsequent solution are a farce.

Callisto · 15/05/2008 13:09

He lost my respect when he sold the majority of Britain's gold reserves at the bottom of the market - against all financial advice. He was a lousy chancellor and I'm amazed that he managed to fool everyone for so long. Even more amazing that everyone thought a lousy chancellor would become a good PM.

AtheneNoctua · 15/05/2008 13:13

So, when is the latest Gordon can call the next election?

OP posts:
Upwind · 15/05/2008 13:13

Does anyone think that he thinks he is an economic genius? He seems to repeatedly suggest that and it frightens me. I would rather have a devious hypocrite in power than a delusional fanatic.

wasabipeanut · 15/05/2008 13:23

Callisto I'm glad you mentioned the gold reserves thing - I thought I was the only person that ever seemed to think this was a bad idea. I can't believe he got away with it for so long and was hailed as a bloody genius.

expatinscotland · 15/05/2008 13:24

Got those naturalisation papers submitted, Athene?

Do it!!!

If you haven't already.

amner · 15/05/2008 13:25

Did you see his nails on the ten o clock news last night ?

Horrible... all bitten to the quick.

noddyholder · 15/05/2008 13:27

well he said there would be no more boom and bust and that is exactly what we are getting.Everyone thought he was great though while we were all riding the credit express! All the growth was built on debt he must have known it had to end We are in for a few years of belt tightening

wasabipeanut · 15/05/2008 13:28

I almost feel sorry for him - to be consumed with the desire to do this job and then realise that he just isn't up to it.

It's tragic really - all that rage and anger and ambition and then he gets what he wants and the wheels fall off. Blair knew what he was doing when he quit.

Quattrocento · 15/05/2008 13:30

Gordon Brown has massively increased in the public sector with highly questionable benefits to us as the general public. He has not made prudent provision for our future in the boom years - he was quick to take credit for those - seems to me that he deserves the stick in the bad years.

LazyLinePainterJane · 15/05/2008 13:32

Does seem to me that anyone with a burning desire to be PM really shouldn't be allowed to do so.

Callisto · 15/05/2008 13:37

The public sector is horrendously bloated and I understood this to be deliberate Labour policy. After all if you're employed, even indirectly, by the Labour govt you're more likely keep voting them in however badly they perform.

winebeforepearls · 15/05/2008 13:42

LazyLine, Socrates and Plato thought the same!

Difficult and painful now to cut the public sector, but it has to be done.

AtheneNoctua · 15/05/2008 13:42

No, expat. I haven't done it. They scared me with talk of a non dom tax. That and the £600 something fee. Do you think Cameron would pay my fee if I promised to vote for him?
