his mother is a better person than I am

.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2008 16:10

I actually opened the thread because, having not lived in the UK for 5 months now, I didn't have a clue of what the thread was about. I'm shocked by the number of teenagers killed in on yr in London.

Twinkie1 · 12/05/2008 16:12

Piffle - these people have never been taught that they have any value so don't realise what they take away from someone else or their family when they murder them!

It was our local school that he went to before we moved - where DD would have gone, just thank god we are away from there - it wasn't getting to be a nice place to live!

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 16:13

i thougth it was, yes, obviously. was it necessary to have this trouble-stirring subject line? or does the OP not want people to hypothesise as to why no-one on MN has posted about this family's tragedy. it'll be class war, it's almost always class war...

DefinitelyNotMARINAWheeler · 12/05/2008 16:19

Aitch has a point with regards to online discussion about press coverage of Jimmy Mizen's murder
I'm afraid people out there are all too ready to speculate about class, race, gang culture, immigration and political correctness as factors influencing the police handling of the murder, and the press coverage also
It seems that there is no tragedy that, for example, BNP members will not seek to use for furtherance of their own ends
Our local paper's bulletin boards make for deeply unedifying reading at the moment.

DefinitelyNotMARINAWheeler · 12/05/2008 16:20

So maybe some posters here didn't want to start a thread on Mn for fearing how it might evolve...
It is possible to be extremely sad and upset about any number of things in the news without starting, or posting on, a thread on MN IME

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 16:23

absolutely, marina, that was what i was trying to say. i deeply resent the implication that because i didn't come on here and talk about a senseless murder that i somehow am deficient in moral character.

SixSpotBurnet · 12/05/2008 16:29

I must admit I didn't get the implication that the OP was "stirring" or had some hidden agenda...

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 16:30

why do you think there has been no mention of JM on here, then?

SixSpotBurnet · 12/05/2008 16:33

If I had to enunciate a reason, probably because the murders/disappearances of very young children in the UK seem to generate more threads/posts than do the murders etc of older children/teenagers. But I didn't really think about it, I just posted.

Piffle · 12/05/2008 16:35

Aitch I did a similar thread about Burma. Not accusing folk of being morally reprehensible but wondering why it had not generated a post.
somethings are so tragic t
it is hard to know where to start.

DefinitelyNotMARINAWheeler · 12/05/2008 16:40

SixSpot, tbh I don't think there was any such agenda meant by the OP either, but having seen this thread today after unwisely clicking on the "Comments" link in my local newspaper website, made me painfully aware that there are some very angry and unpleasant arguments raging in cyberspace, principally about the suspect, and the police handling of the enquiry, rather than the Mizen family of course.

Saturn74 · 12/05/2008 16:44

There was also scant comment re the situation in Zimbabwe.
I agree with Piffle.
What can one say, really - it's all so tragic and worrying.

Mercy · 12/05/2008 16:44

Piffle, I know what you mean. And agree with sixpot too.

For some he's just another statistic , it's so far removed from their own lives it's almost impossible to relate to.

My brother lives in south London and sometimes works with children and young adults. He's increasingly concerned and frustrated by some of things he sees and hears (including children as young as 5 or so)

NappiesGalore · 12/05/2008 16:49

-agree its tragic
-agree the mother is amazing
-agree speculation on 'how can these things be happening' is bound to end up bigoted and nasty
-agree with aitch that thread title is a bit contentious. it just makes me think 'um, dunno.' which is not worth posting, so i wouldnt post it.

noddyholder · 12/05/2008 16:53

I listened to her this am on raqdio 5 and she was so dignified and sounded an amazing mother I was in tears at a news story for teh 1st time in years. There is an awful feeling in this country atm that if your teen goes out the door you may not see tham again.Something has to be done but what?I agree 2shoes older kids not on the same radar for some reason

2shoes · 12/05/2008 16:59

AitchTwoCiao what are you on about.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/05/2008 17:06

I think what the op thought was after so many messages about (whisper... MM) why not some giving opinion on this tragic young life that has been lost? I stress, I think.

Piffle · 12/05/2008 17:11

the situation in Myanmar/Burma had me up in the night with rage against nature and the junta and the fecking unfairness of life sometimes. Now China 8500 dead in earthquake I don't quite know what to do to help.
I went to uni to study languages. Spanish Japanese and Russian to add to French to work for UN humanitarian services.
I got pregnant with ds1 (unplanned but so wanted)and found the only other job that competed. Now I feel the drive to do something.
Life sucks for some people hugely.
I hope what jimmys mother has said touches and changes some lives somewhere.
She sure touched my heart with her dignity and calm.

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 17:15

what do you think i'm on about, 2shoes? everyone else seems to have understood...

2shoes · 12/05/2008 17:16

well you seem to just want to pick a row.
the op made a valid point.

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 17:17

which point?

SixSpotBurnet · 12/05/2008 17:31

Marina, I had not thought of that but I am afraid I can imagine, given the not very pleasant recent history of that neck of the woods and in particular some of the very unpleasant young men associated with that area .

Mercy · 12/05/2008 17:33

I only found out a few days ago that Damilola Taylor's mum died as a result of heart attack. So, so awful for the family.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/05/2008 17:48

Mercy was that recent? I've tried googling but can't see anything.
