She was just going about her work - what on earth has this country become.
Happened at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

He, apparently, was fed up of waiting so long. The POS.

As for what’s happening to this country, it’s failing, that’s what’s happening, terrible governance for over a decade by the Tories, followed now by an incompetent Labour government means it’s only going to get worse.

The poor woman 😢

ThewrathofBethDutton · 13/01/2025 18:29

But this kind of thing happens day in day out.

I’ve been spat at, kicked, scratched, bruised then finally kicked so hard across a room I couldn’t get up.
Called names, threatened while just going about my job as a nurse. This is by both patients and their relatives.

I left the NHS in the end.

But this person (presumably) took the knife to the hospital. And the act of carrying the knife therefore happened before the long wait. This person needs life in prison.

Mittens67 · 13/01/2025 18:40

I am a retired nurse. In my working life I have been sworn at, threatened with rape, spat at, scratched, bitten, shoved, slapped and punched but this is beyond anything.
I am appalled.
I wonder sometimes that anyone wants to nurse anymore. Hard work for insufficient pay and awful hours. Now this. I hope security measures will be increased to stop this ever happening again although I don’t know how exactly that could be achieved when there are patients like this excuse for a man.

They've said it wasn't a knife.

EasternStandard · 13/01/2025 18:48

This is so awful 😞

wizzywig · 13/01/2025 18:54

Horrendous. I was surprised at the attempted murder charge as usually it'd be listed as assault on emergency worker. But finally there is an appropriate charge. I hope the victim is doing OK

What?

Ohthedaffodils · 13/01/2025 19:04

@9tee apparently a pair of scissors was used.

What’s a diversity related crime?

This is shocking! I find it so depressing that people would attack nurses and emergency services staff who work so hard every day to try and help others

Care to elaborate?

comedycentral · 13/01/2025 19:12

So sad. I hope they recover well and get the support they need for the mental trauma too. I have relatives in frontline NHS roles; it's such a worry with people carrying weapons.

But he must have already have the knife with him.
So it can't just be fed up of waiting, unless he went away, got a knife and came back.

silversellers · 13/01/2025 19:15

NHS needs to be zero tolerance to all this. I know nurses who have been threatened, assaulted and racially abused.

Longma · 13/01/2025 19:15

Re-read. So no knife.
So he went and got the scissors from a room somewhere?

It was a pair of scissors, I read.

I do think excessive waiting times is going to exacerbate tempers. When you tell endless very sick people to sit on uncomfortable chairs or the floor and wait for twelve hours, the atmosphere is going to get very unpleasant.

I'm not excusing it, but keeping so many people in a heightened state of emotion penned in together is a recipe for disaster.

Am actually shocked at the naivety of members of the public......this isn't new behaviour at all. As a nurse I've been physically assaulted so many times and had bruises and scratches from patients. Lots of verbal aggression from relatives. Am actually surprised that this person is getting charged as usually nothing happens and the nurse is made to feel as if it's their fault they've been attacked

Hotflushesandchilblains · 13/01/2025 19:20

Its unbelievable that someone could do this to people trying to help them. Similar with paramedics - it is shocking to see how often they are attacked. I really think hospitals should be able to ban people - obviously not to be undertaken lightly, but if you routinely show up and are abusive and aggressive or assaultive, you dont get to go back. And if that eans you dont get treatment - too bad for you.

My sister's shoulder was crushed. The bones were in so many pieces that they couldn't put them back together. Permanently disabled at 54.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 13/01/2025 19:22

@Poppybob - I think there needs to be a blanket reporting policy, without pressure being put on staff. I have been on the other end of the 'oh, do you really want to report it' discussion, not just with higher ups, but also with the police. And told them my policy is to report every single time. Zero tolerance is the only way to go.
