Baby boy drowned in the bath.

www.bbc.com/news/articles/c99xgv0mz9no

I have to say I'm surprised there aren't more deaths. I bet it's easy to get distracted if you're on your phone.

Poor baby and I also feel for the family and the mum.

Most people aren’t sitting there on their phone while their baby is in the bath.
It’s not easy to be distracted by it at all.

Plumpkittenmother · 18/12/2024 23:14

Erm no I don't think it's remotely normal to get distracted by your phone when your baby, toddler or even young child is in the bath.

Sadly though it looks like it happens. Very sad state of affairs when people are literally stuck to their phones.

HollopingHooligans · 18/12/2024 23:15

Nope, can honestly say I've never been so distracted by a shitty cooking game on my phone that I've left a baby alone in the bath for 26 minutes.

It's hardly something that could just happen to anyone FFS. This family were on SS radar long before this happened.

Why the attention-grabbing title with multiple exclamation marks? Sounds like you're enjoying the drama of this awful story.

Article says the mother was smoking cannabis at the time.

No not at all. I didn't want anyone to be upset by the title.

What weirdo would think that?

You feel sorry for the mum?? She left her 8 month old completely unsupervised for 26 minutes while she played a game on her phone in an entirely different room. Very clear neglect, she’s a fucking disgrace and should never have charge of a child again. I hope she’s haunted until her last breath.

mlc0 · 18/12/2024 23:20

She should be sterilised!

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2024 23:20

I don’t see that OP felt sorry for the mum at all?

Oreyt · 18/12/2024 23:21

Wow I'm not the one who's done it. I just think she's wasn't in a good mental state.

I said I feel for her. I do. She will never get over it. Doesn't mean she isn't at fault.

Maybe it was the cannabis she had been smoking that day!

The child was known to social services and on the child protection register.

mumoftwo1981 · 18/12/2024 23:26

26 minutes is a really long time to leave such a young baby in the bath alone. Set a timer for 26 mins and then see if you still have sympathy.

Oreyt · 18/12/2024 23:29

If I had just put the article on without mentioning the mum people would accuse me of "enjoying the drama of this awful story." As above.

You can't win.

I think it's good to raise awareness that you shouldn't be on your phone while bathing a child. Yes most know this. Clearly not all do.

I didn't say I have sympathy for her at all.

Who leaves the bathroom for any reason when their baby/toddler is in the bath?? This woman had been on a parenting course and told not to leave the baby alone and to bring what was needed before bathing. So it's not a tragic mistake or a lack of awareness or ability to work out what's safe and what's not.

The simple fact is that she did not put her baby's safety before her own wants. The drug taking, the lack of organisation and then the prolonged disinterest and being in a different room.

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/12/2024 23:30

I know it's not the bath but last weekend I saw a toddler, perhaps 18mths old toddling towards edge of the dockside near my home. There are just two old strips of cast iron rails less than an inch diameter between child and then perhaps a foot of stone then the dock and 8ft drop into very cold, dirty water. Child was gurgling and toddling closer and closer to the rail. Dad with pushchair was on his phone looking up, I shouted to the child "hey sweetie come this way, daddy is over here" but she didn't hear me, she continued, I rushed over and grabbed her, at this point dad pushed me out of the way and said "I've got her" and glared at me. I just did a hard stare and said "great, I'm glad you noticed in time" and continued on my way. Ffs, seconds later and she'd have been in, in 2or 3 degrees temp water 8ft below the dockside and no way to get her out.

He gave me looks to kill, but he had his daughter in his arms and he knew that I knew how close that had been.
There's no excuse for a phone whilst bathing a baby and none either for on a dockside. Water and babies and phones just don't mix.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 18/12/2024 23:32

@Oreyt disgraceful! i never even answered the phone or the door if mine were in the bath!

Well no of course you wouldn't even leave the bath side.

It's not just being on your phone whilst in the same room as the baby. She left the room for almost half an hour. That's madness. She also knew that the bath seat wasn't fixed properly due to the shape of the bath. She also had smoked cannabis. She also failed to bring everything she needed (a towel!) and left the room initially to get one. The phone thing is just what she was doing when she was out of the bathroom, stupid but not the main issue here which is deciding to leave him unsupervised in an unsuitable seat. He could have drowned even if she'd been out of the room for 5 minutes getting a towel.

Raise awareness? Confused
Anyone with the capacity to understand already knows.
Anyone else shouldn’t be left in charge of a hamster, let alone a child.

you may want to have it removed.

I'm afraid I don't believe that at all. I've seen people pushing buggies into traffic while reading their phones.

I know. I don't understand why I've come across as I have done but I've gone wrong somewhere.

This is nothing to do with an ordinary parent getting distracted by a phone. Sadly some people who have children are unfit parents. This woman was already known to social services.

SilenceInside · 18/12/2024 23:50

I think it's probably the suggestion that it's easy to get distracted for half an hour whilst your small baby is alone in a bathroom. It really isn't. That's why this woman now has a criminal conviction. It's not normal parenting and an easy to make mistake when you're tired.
