In southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, 79 people have died from an unknown flu-like illness. The number of infections has exceeded 300. Local doctors are appealing for help. WHO experts arrived at the scene.I hope not gonna be another pandemic

I wondered about this last night when it was on the bottom of the screen on BBC World news. Suspiciously quiet…

The same was with covid. It was started in Wuhan December 2019 but the media was keeping quiet for while. Hope is not gonna spread with migration

Some sources saying over 140 dead. Remember not all cases will be reported due to lack of access to medical care/official records of deaths and ill health.

People should also remember that there is no evidence that the virus is "unknown" as opposed to "unidentified". This area is extremely poor and has almost no healthcare provision. There may be lots of explanations, so perhaps not rubbing our hands with glee about another pandemic yet?

Ooh good. I'll stock up on nerf gun pellets to paste the neighbours with if they dare to step into their garden for 30 mins.

Wellfuckmesideways · 05/12/2024 17:06

Any chance you can link to other? I had a quick search and couldn't see anything

Zimunya · 05/12/2024 17:09

WHO experts arrived at the scene.

This is the most worrying aspect. The same WHO experts who advised that all women of child bearing age should refrain from alcohol, and failed to make the link between the COVID virus and the poorly secured laboratory in Wuhan until more than a year later, when they made a half assed visit to the laboratory, long after most of the evidence was destroyed?

Do I need to start buying toilet roll and educational material yet?

Stop feeding the conspiracy theories, what's suspicious about it?

BeeCucumber · 05/12/2024 17:13

I've got plenty of hand sanitizer and masks from the last pandemic, so I'm good to go.

AlteredStater · 05/12/2024 17:15

Found this from Sky news, but remember people there don't have as much access to treatment and that can make mortality rates seem much higher.

Just the loo roll. And pasta.

Always very interested in news like this as a friends dissatation was on the Spanish flu when I did my biology degree. Then I kicked myself that my dissatatation was on sewage spills.

Nothings come onto my radar but I didn't even know about France so....

Supersimkin7 · 05/12/2024 17:23

Health scares are way more frequent than pandemics, even in
the age of mass travel.

Cornettoninja · 05/12/2024 17:30

I used to follow a website years ago that has a world map updated with current weather events, conflicts, earthquakes and disease outbreaks.

Sadly the DRC is a hotspot for outbreaks of disease and has been for ages. The media just feeds into what their readers find interesting and given how recently the latest pandemic was, it’s easy click bait.

Yes and the same WHO who reclassified pandemic so it now means anything they want it to.

I just accidental bought a huge bag of pasta so I’m sorted.

Didn’t know what about France?

Havalona · 05/12/2024 17:59

Well at least I know where DRC is. I confess to never having heard of Wuhan before the pandemic.

The same WHO who sent a crack team of international experts to Wuhan to discover the origins of Covid.

That team included Dr Peter Daszak, who's company EcoHealth Alliance was funding gain of function research on bat coronaviruses in the Wuhan Lab. Funny that.

In its March 2021 report, the team concluded that it was “extremely unlikely” that the virus had accidentally escaped from a laboratory.

and since then..

The World Health Organization (WHO) has quietly shelved the second phase of its much-anticipated scientific investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, citing ongoing challenges over attempts to conduct crucial studies in China, Nature has learned.

WHO abandons plans for crucial second phase of COVID-origins investigation

It's the biggest scandal the world has never heard of.

Sensitive studies in China were intended to pinpoint the source of the pandemic virus.

"Around 376 people have been infected and the disease appears to be airborne, he added. Females are slightly more affected than males, and the majority of cases (52%) are under the age of 5. The second biggest group of patients is people aged over 25 (almost 30%).
