just read this article with Jessie Wallace who had her baby 2 months ago and she makes the comment "And I'm not breast feeding as I think it's anti-social," ...that's really going to promote breastfeeding isn't it!!

OP posts:

Sadly, Hercules, celebrities are influential in ways you'd never imagine. The sales of Bugaboo frog pushchairs went through the roof after Gwyneth was seen with hers, likewise all other baby products. That's why Avent send out their stuff to all celeb new mothers, and why they get product placement in mag features...

hercules · 09/01/2005 18:14

Yes, you are right Aloha. I guess it just amazes me that anyone would be influenced by stars.

aloha · 09/01/2005 18:15

SDragon, but if she meant 'it isn't very good for your social life' I think that's OK, as it's her opinion and probably true. I'm pretty sure she had no idea that it had another meaning, which is infinitely more insulting.

SDragon · 09/01/2005 18:16

Oh, I agree but what I was tying to say that it's not what most people will understand from her statement.

aloha · 09/01/2005 18:18

Yes, but you can't do anything about illiteracy, can you?

SDragon · 09/01/2005 18:19

According to those ads with the gremlins in you can

aloha · 09/01/2005 18:20

Yes, but would you get a job on EE if you were superbly literate and could express yourself with fluency and intelligence???

hercules · 09/01/2005 18:21

You'd certainnly get paid more for working on ee.

hercules · 09/01/2005 18:21

certainly

SDragon · 09/01/2005 18:21

Absolutely. I'm certain that your description matches 99.9% of the cast.

hercules · 09/01/2005 18:23

Look, haven't we had enough trouble with libellous statements on mn recently.

Oops, sorry, it's only a problem if it's not true.

I always found that if I breastfed my ds anywhere but at a mother and baby group everyone would leave the room or desperately try to look away. So I can see how you might think it a little anti social. However I alway thought "sod em its my boob and if I don't mind why should they" its not as though they have never seen a boob before is it?

I dont think my son helped as he wasn't a fan of doing it subtly and liked to get the whole thing out then stop and take a long look around the room

beansprout · 09/01/2005 18:41

LOL Triceratops - mine is the same. Sort of "well, thanks for this, stay there though, as I am just going to do this"... and he surveys his domain while I sit there hoping no-one is looking . I know I should be more brazen but it hasn't happened yet.

zebra · 09/01/2005 21:32

thanks, JulieF, for being the only one who got what I was saying.

I could feel upset by JW's (attributed) remark because it effectively implies that people who breastfeed in public are "gross"... but, the remark undermines itself... I think it says more about the woman who said it and the relative importance of her child in her life, than it does about breast or bottle, really.

I suspect what she really said/meant was "I don't breastfeed in public because it's anti-social"... which would be a rather sad thing to say, too, like she was saying that breastfeeding was something to be ashamed of and hid away. But again, that would show her ignorance, not a reality.

Personally can't believe that any actress would be "too shy" to breastfeed. I must have some misconception about what actors do for a living, then!!

Didn't Uma Thurman shock some American chat show host by trying to breastfeed her baby on air? What about the poster by Jerry Hall breastfeeding one of her babies? Some celebs have been quite open & confident about it.

Caligula · 09/01/2005 21:36

But La Wallace isn't an actor, she's a celeb!

Judy Dench is an actor [Margot Leadbetter emotion - please can we have one of those, I seem to need it so often ]

zebra · 09/01/2005 21:40

Oh, right, don't have a clue who she is, to be honest. But you aren't trying to say that celebs in general are usually shy retiring, private types too, are you??

highlander · 10/01/2005 04:50

to be fair, anyone who sees me and DS trying to feed when he's surrounded by other, more interesting, entertainment would probably find it a bit anti-social
Aside from the plentiful right breast (jets guaranteed) he tries to perform Exorcist stylee head manoeveres to check on whats going on, whilst still grimly hanging onto my nipple and suck. If anyone dares approach, he detaches to smile beautifully whilst blowing milky bubbles in their face. We never did get the dictionary out and look up 'discrete'

TwoIfBySea · 10/01/2005 20:52

She is entitled to her opinion, although I don't put much weight on what minor or major celebs say anyway.

It would have been less stupid for her to have simply said she didn't want to breast-feed because she didn't want to. Nothing wrong with that and she wouldn't have then insulted those who can/do bf.

eidsvold · 13/01/2005 22:53

do most reasonable sane people really care what La Wallace says?!!?!?!

pixiefish · 13/01/2005 23:26

highlander- . My dd tried to turn 180 degrees tonight- very quickly and before I could stop her ^with6 my nipple still in her mouth. That's what I get for feeding her lying down.

highlander · 14/01/2005 01:44

pixiefish - have you ever seen those pictures of dogs that have had many litters? Nipples trailing on the floor - I'm sure that's what I'll look like when DS is finished with me
