Anyone terrified of WW3

Hi,

I know there has been lots of chat around this and I have to avoid the news because it sends my anxiety over the edge, does anyone have a overwhelming feat that nuclear war is about to kick off 🫣

OP posts:

I used to worry too much about news stuff, but I switched to only reading the Financial Times and now I am more relaxed. They only give a very beige version of the news and it makes me feel informed without being panicked all the time.

It's subscription only, but it's way cheaper than buying the guardian and ending up in therapy for anxiety disorder.

Also I grew up next to the nuclear deterrent in Scotland in the 80s and my Mum always said there was no point worrying about nuclear war, because if it happened we'd be vapourised before we knew it was happening, so best just relax and get on with it. LOL.

I have enough to worry about without borrowing trouble over things out of my control, so no I don't even think about it.

Honestly avoiding the news and therefore making yourself more ignorant won’t do anything to help your anxiety. People are always more scared of things they don’t understand. (I say this as someone who struggles with anxiety, so I do understand- but really feel the burying your head in the sand approach is wrong)

And you think you'll get the real answer from the news? 😂

No. And if it does, we’ll all be dead so it won’t matter.

Yep, we won't know anything about it...

OP the world seemed to be on the brink of WW3 in the 60s with the Cuban Missile Crisis and then on into the 70s/80s because of the Cold War. I think there is so much rolling news today that people are more aware of regional conflicts and how those potentially could escalate.

I have reached the age where I have realised that I have absolutely no control over whether or not there will be WW3 and I just need to get on with life and make the most of it.

I know that maybe sounds a little glib but I really don't think you're doing yourself any good. There will always be conflict and the best thing you can do is try to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't become all consuming.

No

Always remember news is rarely fact but opinion

Look at the Middle East.

Israel is running rampant and Tehran has lost its bottle - they will not engage Tel Aviv directly because they know it would be existential for them.

Putin will not resort to the use of even tactical nukes because Washington would decimate his armed forces by conventional means, and Beijing would excommunicate him.

No, we won't. The biggest killer will be the radiation and infection resulting from burns. Food and water will be contaminated too so there will be starvation and massive civil unrest. Most people will die from the after effects rather than the explosion.

Having lived through the Cold War, living and still living near to a place that would be a target…I’ve adopted my late father’s response - Get in the car and drive to the gates as better to die quickly than suffer the nuclear winter to follow!

Seriously though, I don’t think if it ever happens, it’ll be war of bullets and tanks. More likely cyber attacks, water, electricity smart meters etc. look at the chaos this summer when card/online payments/flights were disrupted for a day.

I used to always be terrified of war and nuclear war, I'd analyse the news and Mumsnet reading very topic on it. My anxiety was so high. I decided to delete all my news apps and not read about anything to do with it. Might be ignorant but it has really helped with my mental health.

I'm not worried, I can't wait to see what happens in November, it's going to be hilarious if trump gets back in 🤣😁😬😱🤪

No, it wouldn’t.
There isn’t one funny thing about Donald Trump.

UK has been affected by wars in every decade that I can remember from the 80s to now. We've had CND in 80s, NI troubles in 70s and 80s, war with Argentina in Falklands in 80s, Gulf war in 90s, 911 in 2001 and then more recent terrorist activity. I don't think that there is any greater risk today.

I think the difference now is that because of social media and the ease of reporting from around the world we get to hear about everything from everywhere which makes things seems worse I think. We can only hope and pray
