I never start threads (I am the kiss of death to them) but I'm just too intrigued...has NO-ONE posted on this story then?! Just interested in what you all think.

OP posts:
MargaretMountford · 21/04/2008 13:21

he can't have made himself very sick after eating [unkind emoticon]
also he claims his wife helped him get over it but I think bulimia and other eating disorders really require expert psychiatric help. I waas in hospital with a teenager who had anorexia and it was quite devastating for him.

MargaretMountford · 21/04/2008 13:21

male teenager...

frogs · 21/04/2008 13:22

The thought of John Prescott in any situation is pushing it, tbh. The thought of JP vomiting is more than my delicate constitution will stand.

TheDullWitch · 21/04/2008 13:24

Why on earth did he put it in his autobiog?
Honestly he was at centre of gvt for 10 yrs, didn t anything more important happen.
Now all I can imagine is him stuffing pies and chips then barfing them in the HoC bogs.
Was repulsive enough thought him bonking his seccy.

harpsichordcarrier · 21/04/2008 13:24

I think it was extremely brave of him to go public about something so private.
good for him, I admire him.

BetteNoire · 21/04/2008 13:26

A sad tale.
Poor man.

I was at my parents house last night, and was very at Sky News, as the slant on the item was that JP actually threw a punch at that demonstrator because he threw an egg (eg food) at him.
FFS!

TheDullWitch · 21/04/2008 13:28

oh for goodness sake... why admire him for bringing up (arf) something so repulsive and personal.

Are we supposed to feel more sympathetic now, let him off the hook about certain political decisions.

Can t celebs/politicians show a bit of dignity.
What next? a run down of Gordon Brown's bowel movements?

BrassicMonkey · 21/04/2008 13:29

Agree Harpsi.

A thread was started last night with lots of unkind comments on it, btw...

LittleBella · 21/04/2008 13:31

Well I think he's been very brave in talking about something as personal and painful as an eating disorder.

With his appearance and reputation, he knows he is going to get the piss ripped out of him by the media and by the public. We all know about Prescott and Pies. The savage derision of much of the response has been depressingly predictable. It never occurred to anyone to take the piss out of Princess Diana for being bulimic did it, because she was thin and pretty, but a fat old gimmer like John Prescott is fair game for the most cruel, unkind mockery about a really vile illness. It's like if you're not beautiful and passive, your feelings are a joke and your sufferings a source of entertainment. Horrible.

harpsichordcarrier · 21/04/2008 13:33

unkind comments?
what, because he is a bit fat?
glad I didn't see it tbh.
I am no Prescott apologist but he is just a human being fgs.

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 13:35

I am not a fan of JP but if it helps just 1 person get help and get better then it is worth seeing him on the news again.

TheDullWitch · 21/04/2008 13:36

But why write abouut it?
To get sympathy? Because everyone will say, apres Diana, that anyone who has experienced addiction/disorder/cruel mummy is let off the hook for their actions and is "brave".

Braver than folks who deal with their problems quietly and privately.

Skimty · 21/04/2008 13:37

I felt sorry for him. I think it's good that he's come forward. Bulimia doesn't help you lose weight so comments like that are bit silly IMO.

BUT did have to laugh at commment in Guardian:
Although, Prescott tried to hide the illness from his wife, Pauline, she realised what was going on.'The signs in the toilet gave it away, and all the missing food.'
So he didn't even clean the toilet properly afterwards uggghhh!!

The reference to last night's thread was for Elffriend Harpsi.

God knows what Gordon Brown's bowel movements have got to do with JP revealing that he has an eating disorder.

BetteNoire · 21/04/2008 13:38

I think it is useful for people to see that eating disorders can affect anyone, irrespective of gender, age, status, career and clothing size.

And that the secrecy involved means that it is difficult to help the sufferers.

LittleBella · 21/04/2008 13:39

DullWitch, why not write about it?

Should Princess Diana not have spoken out about her experience of it? Should she have dealt with it "in private"?

BetteNoire · 21/04/2008 13:40

I don't think anyone is suggesting that suffering from an eating disorder means you should be let off the hook for your actions though.

JossStick · 21/04/2008 13:40

Stress and pressure can affect people in different ways. My bessie mate's hand and fingers go all numb when she's particularly stressed out.

This sort of thing is going to get more common as people work longer hours and stress about money.

muffle · 21/04/2008 13:41

I think he would get a lot more sympathy if he hadn't had that affair tbh, plus various other details coming to light about him having too many perks or whatever it was a few years before. It just seems like yet more prescott-related TMI. In isolation, of course it's sad.

I know it's a serious problem etc. etc. and not really to be laughed at - but couldn't quite stifle a quick giggle at someone saying Prezza must be the most unsuccessful bulimic given he didn't manage to lose weight.

orangina · 21/04/2008 13:49

I'm with TheDullWitch. We're all talking about him barfing, rather than what a shite politician he is/was....
(with sympathy)
Mission accomplished.

oiFoiF · 21/04/2008 13:53

sharon osbourne didnt lose weight either though did she when she was bulimic>

i think irs good that he has spoke out too. Very difficult for a man, especiaslly a northern one to be so honest aboyut it

2shoes · 21/04/2008 15:43

tbh I don't know what is worse. his sad attempt at being human or the 2 threads on mn.
