He was in Merthyr Tydfil.

Has he been charged do you know?

MynameisML · 31/07/2024 18:30

The extent of crime never surprises me, I probably watch too much true crime to know how many evil people there are or how much crime pays. What I don’t understand is child SA. Why on earth would that be appealing to anyone? It’s a different kind of pathology. The worst criminals apparently feel the same - as we know paedophiles are not safe in prison.

I can’t imagine H.E.serving a prison sentence for this reason. On the other hand, they might make an example of him (in which case the guy who sent it should get the same). He will be under isolation in prison for his own safety.
More than likely, he’ll get a suspended sentence and we will never hear of him again, similar to how we heard nothing since last year.

mrsmiawallace3 · 31/07/2024 18:38

Sloppiness? Or deliberate obfuscation.

crumblingschools · 31/07/2024 18:39

@BloodyHellKenAgain he got a 12 month suspended sentence 😡

InsomniacIda · 31/07/2024 18:40

How must Huw’s family be feeling? He has children and a wife. If I were them I would never speak to him again.

Edited

Well he’s separated from his wife now, his adult children will make their own minds up, I doubt we will ever know.

Is reporting to the police enough to actually stop you being prosecuted for receiving photos though?

TBH it seems unfair to me that you can be prosecuted for this even if you explicitly tell the person not to send illegal photos to you.

It’s not unfair at all it needs reporting because the child needs to be traced & taken care of. The person sharing needs to be investigated & the original source found & prosecuted.

Yep. As others have pointed out, it’s probably the whole scenario put together in his case: he continued communicating, didn’t block, etc.

On the other hand, he didn’t keep the photos and didn’t forward or send any.

One would hope that if he had responded differently, there’d be a different outcome. This doesn’t seem clear though.

A nice big police presence to protect the perv while entering the court 🥸

I wonder if the man who sent him the images has been tried if he’s in the UK?
There’s been lots of men who don’t go for prison for owning child abuse images but fucking hell it’s all so grim.

Sorry if this has been replied to.

The man was convicted and given a 12 month suspended sentence. The prosecution of Huw Edwards came about through the investigation into this man.

He was viewing pictures of 7 year olds. SEVEN Those are tiny little children who have been abused.

I’m not confident that there’s necessarily always such a thing as tracing the children involved. The police have a database of known images stored so that they don’t have to trawl through every image (it’s done automatically). The children could be from anywhere in the world. Crime is big business. That’s just the impression I get, but could be wrong.

They try. There’s a database thing where you can view partial images to help identify things like logos , brands, posters, and so help track down where the abuse is happening.

They ask questions like , ‘have you ever seen pyjamas like these?’, and so on.

The BBC has become a total embarrassment. It creates these seemingly ring-fenced VIP types who get paid ludicrous salaries - yet there can be no judgment in the process because people like Huw keep slipping through their net.

It's not hard to find someone who'd want to be a BBC presenter - people do shit dogsbody internships at the BBC for no pay just to get a foot on the first rung of the ladder. Why are they paying mediocre men (even leaving aside the criminality aspect) nearly half a million quid to read the news?

HappyKatieA · 31/07/2024 19:17

As a Safeguarding Lead, I get sent various images of faces / clothing, along with images of missing children.
It's heartbreaking when they come through as we know why they're being sent.
They absolutely do try to find the children.

MynameisML · 31/07/2024 19:27

Yes. Of course they try to find the children. I would hope for no less.

BadlyArrangedToasties · 31/07/2024 19:35

When you download an image you "make" a copy. More and more of the same image exist, loads of copies on different computers etc. So in that sense he has made images. Neither here nor there what the verb should be there - is horrendous and unspeakable no matter what

MynameisML · 31/07/2024 19:40

@BadlyArrangedToasties I agree, but he didn't download anything. Everything was found on Whatsapp. Is that the same thing?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 31/07/2024 17:41

Is anyone referring to him as an unfortunate recipient? I thought the conversation had just moved on to a more general one around the full scope of the law, which it seems would include "unfortunate recipients". I don't think the vast majority of people on the thread (certainly not "all these women") are including Edwards in that description

It’s an interesting and valid debate but many on here will not read posts properly or won’t understand what’s being discussed. Comprehension levels on here can be low sometimes

no-one is excusing what he’s done. It’s perfectly valid to firstly talk about clarity of what he’s done and the law more widely.

PrincessofWells · 31/07/2024 19:43

Lampslights · 31/07/2024 17:34

This I can’t believe what I’m reading. The man is a peadophile. He has thankfully been caught and will go to jail.

He will not get a custodial sentence, without a doubt.

Icantpaint · 31/07/2024 19:44

MynameisML · 31/07/2024 17:57

Ah Mumsnet, the place where if you offer a very slightly nuanced view. you get shamed using straw man arguments. This is how polarisation happens online; eg, if you don’t completely agree with me, you must be opposing me. Aka the only point of discussion is not to discuss, just to vent. Fair enough on venting, but that’s what it is.

Spot on
