chocciecake · 05/05/2024 09:40

I'm pleased he was re-elected, I like him and his policies. Can anyone explain the arguments against him ?

Look at his voting record

chocciecake · 05/05/2024 09:47

How can I find that please ?

Is his voting record the reason people don't like him ? Do the general population look at these things?

Jesus wept

why else do you think people wouldn’t like an MP?

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 09:50

Because he knew was going on in Oldham and Greater Manchester with the grooming gangs and ignored it for votes. Too little too late.

Is it really that difficult to google ‘Andy Burnham voting record’?

Yes, did you think he was rude in shops, or people didn’t like his haircut or something, OP?

newnamethanks · 05/05/2024 09:53

Voting record? I thought it was because of his eyebrows.

Rude - I'm trying to educate myself here and this condescending attitude is what puts people off asking questions to learn. I'm talking about the man in the street who reads the sun/mirror/daily mail, do these people follow how MPs vote? And also I was assuming the opinion was formed on his performance as GM mayor rather than as an MP , am I wrong to assume this ?

I agree OP, I very much doubt everyone who hates him on MN has read his voting record either. I also don't see how it differs much from any other MP (votes in favour of whichever way the political wind is blowing and to protect his own self financial interests).

Thanks, this is helpful

Cheers , I'm looking for help in understanding the issues and happy to find information that changes my stance if that's the case

I'll definitely check out his voting record

I'm sure many/most MPs have odd voting records if you search them all.

I was always astounded that Ann Widdecombe voted in favour of the hunting ban.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2024 10:10

Where have you heard that people don't like 'the King of the North' , elected Mayor?

This question seems a tad disingenuous. If I liked someone, I'm not convinced I'd start a thread asking why others didn't...

prsphne · 05/05/2024 10:12

Voting record is how you should judge an (ex) MP, but it has to be done through the lens of a three line whip where MP’s don’t really have free rein to vote as they please.

But I’m not one who’s sure of all the hate. He’s relatively working class and went to a very bog standard state school in a pretty poor part of the country. At least he is relatively representative of the general population of the country, unlike most MPs who are groomed for politics from being children.

BoohooWoohoo · 05/05/2024 10:13

I’m not from Manchester but there’s some obvious possibilities like people preferring another candidate or people not liking the political party that he’s a member of.

newnamethanks · 05/05/2024 10:18

Anne Widdecombe who was happy to have female prisoners in labour handcuffed to their hospital bed in case they picked up their placenta and legged it? That Ann Widdecombe? I wouldn't be surprised if she voted in favour of biting the heads off kittens.

prsphne · 05/05/2024 10:19

Having now looked at his voting record (I’ve never been in a constituency where he is a candidate before so never had cause to look), it all looks very vanilla/very Labour? Even as someone who is right of centre in my politics, I’m struggled to take issue with his voting record or did I miss something?

Well yes, he did win by a large majority. I have heard criticisms from a few people around me but they haven't been able to back it up with arguments. Anyway time to get informed...😀 Probably was a bit lazy to not Google but hey

I quite liked him, till I heard him speak at a medical conference when he was Shadow SOS for Health, in a debate with Jeremy Hunt. It was embarrassing - he was totally winging it, clearly had no idea what he was talking about, even though he had actually been SOS for Health in the last Labour administration.

I'm not a fan (to put it mildly) of Jeremy Hunt, but he wiped the floor with Burnham, without even trying - it wasn't a confrontational set up but Hunt just had command of his brief and came across as a grown-up.

ReelingRoundtheFountain · 05/05/2024 12:50

I personally voted for him because he's better than the alternatives, though I personally find his transport policies tiresome.

We had cones put down in lockdown on one of the major routes to Old Trafford football ground and the town centre, allegedly originally to support people cycling to work and not having to use public transport. Now 4.5 years later the bloody things are still there, the council has spent hundreds of thousands renting them; however they were removed within a month from the section of the road that runs through wealthier areas. No one cycles that route because there is a canal towpath about 50 yards from said road that also goes straight into town and is obviously a much nicer and safer ride. We had "consultations" which were suppressed for ages as they didn't support the cones. Cones are still there, causing pollution as everyone sits far longer in traffic with engines idling.

I imagine that kind of thing cost a few voters.

Desperada68 · 05/05/2024 12:58

As someone who thought very highly of him before moving to the area and now has a much more realistic view, the state of the NHS (close on £190 million quid in debt at the START of the financial year and still rising - great advert for an integrated care system that is) and the MayBee bus network. The idea of the latter was great. But if you're not in central Manchester it leaves rather a lot to be desired. Plus the app is like something out of the early 1990s.

And don't even get me started on education, social care and Leigh. And I SUPPORT Labour, generally.

Yes, it has to be said that London's TFL app (which isn't even that good), kicks Manchester's arse.

I can't see anything much to query in his voting record? Unless you're referring to votes around the war on Irag? In those votes, he voted along party lines.
