Can humans sink any lower? (Extreme animal cruelty)

I read a BBC News article yesterday about the prosecution of a man in the US charged with helping lead a network of hundreds of people commissioning videos of baby monkeys being tortured. Link: BBC News (graphic)

They got bored of the "normal" torture videos on YouTube so set up a private network on the dark web. There, they crowdfunded to pay men in Indonesia to film more extreme violence, voting for what they wanted to happen next. Two women in the UK have also been charged. One of the British women set up some of the most extreme videos, involving monkeys being tortured to death.

When I read about the murderer "Scarlet" Blake putting a cat in a blender, I wondered how an individual could be so senselessly cruel. I am horrified that there were hundreds of people actively getting together and crowdfunding to inflict the same violence on other innocent creatures. How can people sink so low?

Ringleader of global monkey torture network, 'The Torture King', is charged

Michael Macartney, 50, confessed to the BBC his role in an extreme monkey torture network.

I know the British woman you mention. I’ve known her, professionally since she was a child. I always thought that she was ND but I was wrong, she’s a psychopathic baby monkey murderer.
I really feel for her parent and grandparent who are really nice people. They must be devastated.

KripKrapKrisp · 04/04/2024 21:09

everyone involved should be tortured to death.

BlowDryRat · 04/04/2024 21:10

@Angrymum22 that's awful. I hope people leave her family alone.

Words fail me. Those poor beautiful creatures.

So do I. I think she has caused them a lot of stress in the past before she was involved in this.

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 21:13

It beggars belief doesn't it? Just awful

OldTinHat · 04/04/2024 21:14

@Angrymum2 just sending you [💐]

Unless you are vegan then you are contributing to the same sorts of things. Male chicks get gassed or crushed to death (similar to being put in a blender) in the egg industry as they have no 'use'. Dairy cows have their babies ripped from them and cry over it for days, the male calves are killed for veal. Lambs have their throats slit. Pigs cry out as they die in gas chambers. None of it is ok, sorry to be brutal.

This made me sick to my stomach when I saw it yesterday . The depravity knows no bounds and personally I'd execute anyone capable of such horror

StylishM · 04/04/2024 21:17

@bakewellbride you're an angry, militant vegan and it's getting very tiresome reading your rhetoric on every post loosely related to animals.

I don't disagree. I'm not a psychologist but IIRC animal cruelty is a strong indicator of someone who will also commit violence or kill other people.

@StylishM hello, no I'm not - I'm just pointing out that it's bizarre that baby moneys = not ok yet baby chicks and numerous other baby animals = absolutely fine. I just can't understand it.

Also monkeys, rabbits and other animals are routinely tortured to test beauty products that many, many people buy without a minute's thought. Again that's ok apparently. It just doesn't make any sense!

She's also a last word freak. No point engaging really.

It is true though. You don't like what they say because it's true

Daffodilsarentfluffy · 04/04/2024 21:52

Just managed to read the whole article. Mini survived a year of abuse miraculously and is in a rescue awaiting her return to the wild. A ray of hope.. And hopefully the guards will turn a blind eye to the bastards jailed for their hideous crimes....

thankyouforthedayz · 04/04/2024 22:15

@bakewellbride do you really think there is moral equivalence between a human choosing to torture a monkey for sick gratification and omnivorous humans producing animals for food? If so you have absolutely no moral compass and you should be ashamed of yourself. I won't be returning g to this thread so you don't need to reply.

What @bakewellbride says is the truth though. What we view as food other countries do not and vice versa. Sentient beings etc

Glanced over the article, sickening just like the BBC international dog fighting case.

I won’t be back to the thread either so strop if you wish. This stuff gives me nightmares

Speakinginsign · 04/04/2024 23:49

Yup. I’m not surprised. My recent work has unravelled some really sickening things done to primates. Seriously, this is the tip of the iceberg. I thought they were only being done in the 60s & 70s but they are still shockingly common.

I saw a film called Project Nim (it’s on Amazon Prime) about a chimpanzee, Nim Chimpsky, who was taught sign language. I am a psychologist & learnt about this on my degree, years ago. After watching Project Nim, I was moved to do something. I contacted one of the friends of Nim, a man called Robert Ingersoll.

In 6 months we wrote a book undercover about some of the horrific things that were and are done to primates. We wrote about a wonderful woman from Cheshire named Shirley McGreal who saw crates of monkeys at Bangkok airport, ready for transportation. She single-handedly changed animal laws.

I am constantly sent stupid images “because you work with monkeys”. Pretty sure many originated from these groups. Any clip with a monkey or chimpanzee in cutesy clothing, performing tricks and “entertaining” online is a part of this abuse.

I hope my - and others’ - reporting of these images to Facebook & Instagram has led to this investigation. Telegram is also a source of passing on this filth.

Hoping this is the start of a more general ban of primate porn.

We have written a second book: “Trauma in Sentient Beings” about this same issue. Thank you for this post.

Speakinginsign · 04/04/2024 23:52

Our first book is called “Primatology, Ethics & Trauma” and about many issues aligned to this. I don’t want to derail the thread but would be happy to answer questions.

FiveFoxes · 06/04/2024 12:09

@Speakinginsign I learnt about all these primate studies when I studied Psychology. I also recently read “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves” by Karen Joy Fowler, which reminded me about them all and their suffering. We KNOW primates have feelings. Thank you for your work. I am going to Google your books now.

Bumbleebeetree · 15/04/2024 10:31

It makes me feel sick to my stomach and ashamed to be a human being. I've never read anything so horrible in my life. I wonder if there's anything we can do on an individual level to help stop this happening? And what's the best charity to donate to who campaign against these horrible people?

Pantaloons99 · 15/04/2024 11:00

It makes me feel so sick and actually disturbed that people like this exist out there. I can only think that psychopathy makes it possible for them to do with ease.

I'm not a vegan. I don't think you can exactly compare this to veganism but the militant vegan does make a point that I imagine most of us just don't want to face or accept.

Bumbleebeetree · 15/04/2024 12:11

I'm also vegan for the animals but can see the reason people are so disturbed by this is because it's so needlessly cruel and calculated. The food and medical industry (however horribly cruel) does serve some purpose to aiding human health.

On a side note, Compassion in World Farming are a brilliant charity committed to helping improve the lives of farm animals. Worth looking into if you're a meat eater who likes animals. I don't work for them, but am a long time supporter. The website doesn't have horrible pictures on it if you decide to check them out.

anothernamitynamenamechange · 16/04/2024 22:04

I'm vegetarian but there's a massive difference between the killing of animals for food and this. Its not even the type of animal involved. There is a difference between e.g. killing mice in traps or with poison because you can't have them in your house, and going to a pet shop and purchasing a mouse to then torture to death/kill.

And, that said, there is something particularly disturbing about deliberately targeting baby monkeys. They are so so similar to human babies in lots of ways and I worry that was the point. And all the gloating about how scared it was/how trusting etc. Evil.
