Why is no one talking about Project 2025?

TheGreatestAtuin · 09/02/2024 20:13

I have looked for another thread on the topic and was surprised not to find one...

The far right is going fucking bonkers. Particularly in the US. If you haven't read up on Project 2025 I would urge you to do so. It is really quite concerning.

It really feels like the world is on a precipice, and if it tips over the edge, everything is going to go to shit.

Trouble is I'm worried that all of the sane people on the planet are too worried about being "kind" and "woke", or about saying something that might hurt someone else's feelings (let's face it you can't turn around without hurting someone's feelings these days) to actually do something about it.

Is anyone else just looking around at what's going on around the world and thinking WTF?

OP posts:
RoseAndRose · 10/02/2024 13:00

It's probably not being talked about much here on a British site because it's a domestic issue in the USA.

parkrun500club · 10/07/2024 14:56

It is a domestic issue, but it will have an impact here as well. When the US sneezes, we catch a cold and all that, and there will be nutters agitating for the same sorts of rules here. Reform seem like a likely party to pick up some of the themes.

DontThinkJustDo · 10/07/2024 16:20

I'd never heard of it before. That is, quite frankly, terrifying.

CaveMum · 11/07/2024 21:51

They’ve talked about it a bit on The Rest is Politics US podcast and the prospect of Trump and it being enacted is horrifying.

LumiB · 11/07/2024 21:55

Not heard about it so whats it's about

cupcaske123 · 11/07/2024 21:55

I'm with you OP - Trump is going for a dictatorship. The US seems to be sleep walking into it. With the rise of the far right in Europe, things are looking dangerous.

Teacherprebaby · 11/07/2024 22:00

Lots of people are talking about it ....maybe look elsewhere other than Mumsnet for your political news.

It’s basically a right-wing manifesto that has been drawn up over the years by people who are now pretty deep in the Trump campaign. It advocates for basically sacking the US equivalent of the civil service and rehiring them after making them take some kind of patriotism test, and also bringing the executive branch (organisations like the FBI) under Presidential control - ie creating a dictatorship.

Twodozenroses · 11/07/2024 22:03

I didn’t know about it so just read about it. Very handmaids tale

in the article I read it said trump was distancing himself from it. Is that likely?

Don't forget the 'Christian Values'.

google It, but be careful of the slippery slope you may find yourself going down. It’s scary if true

BustingBaoBun · 12/07/2024 11:24

It's absolutely terrifying, an authoritarian power grab. Handmaids tale and worse.

The Project 25 group says women should be mandated to carry "period passports" that track their menstrual cycles and must be kept up to date, and women must present these to police officers during random ID checks to monitor pregnancies.
No IVF
Let alone releasing all those who took part in Jan.6th insurrection
Strip job protection
No seperation of Church and state
Dismantle the administration and the Dept of Justice, defund the FBI, jail anyone who doesn't agree with Trump, replace with those loyal to Trump
Dismantle Department of Education, he would become a authoritarian ruler
Mass deportations, even for those who were born in US

The bit about period passports is not true. That first appeared in a satirical post by a creator who describes their content as "halfway true comedy and satire". It was seized on by some social media users and circulated as true. You will therefore find plenty of references to this alleged policy on the internet. However, it isn't anywhere in Project 2025's 900-page playbook.

Their proposals are scary enough without adding to them. These nutjobs should be kept as far away from government as possible.

BustingBaoBun · 12/07/2024 14:04

That's good to hear, thank you for qualifying.

I just imagine it could be an aim in the future though....

CaveMum · 12/07/2024 14:10

Here’s a clip of Mooch talking about Project 2025. There’s a link to the full interview in the Tweet.

Don't these things have to get through Congress and the house of representatives or is Trump just going to overrule them?

Hahaha. I wouldn't believe Trump if he said the sky was blue.

If, as currently looks possible, the Republicans take the House, the Senate and the White House they can pretty much do whatever the hell they like.

There’s a lot of concern in Democrat circles that if Biden won’t stand aside they will need to shift focus to House and Senate races to try and maintain some balance.

Hasn't it been found that the president is immune from the law? What will stop him doing anything he wants?

CaveMum · 18/07/2024 18:04

@cupcaske123 THAT is the $1million question.

I keep saying it on a lot of threads, so aware I sound like a broken record, but I really recommend listening to TRIP US each week. They can go into a lot more detail than regular news broadcasts and hearing from someone who has worked with Trump is morbidly fascinating.

How does it work when it clashes with the constitution?

suburberphobe · 18/07/2024 18:20

I've just been reading about it on Wikipedia - utterly terrifying!

As a pp said upthread, what with the rise of the far-right in Europe....the mind boggles.

up shit's creek without a paddle

CaveMum · 18/07/2024 18:23

If they have the votes they just vote to amend the Constitution. It’s been done 27 times before, though not since (I think) Clinton and that was a procedural amendment rather than anything big like the 13th amendment which abolished slavery or the 19th which gave women the vote.

I know amendments have to be ratified by the individual states, but if the Republicans manage to control the majority of them they will pass it. I’m not sure if it has to be ratified by all states or just a majority though.

So I found this. Looks like it's not a quick process:

The founders also specified a process by which the Constitution may be amended, and since its ratification, the Constitution has been amended 27 times. In order to prevent arbitrary changes, the process for making amendments is quite onerous. An amendment may be proposed by a two-thirds vote of both Houses of Congress, or, if two-thirds of the States request one, by a convention called for that purpose. The amendment must then be ratified by three-fourths of the State legislatures, or three-fourths of conventions called in each State for ratification. In modern times, amendments have traditionally specified a time frame in which this must be accomplished, usually a period of several years. Additionally, the Constitution specifies that no amendment can deny a State equal representation in the Senate without that State’s consent.
