Good.

We have had this in Germany as long as I have been here (15 years).

I have one of these and one of these

The second one clips onto the trolley.

i agree with this policybut was aghast at xmas that 3 different stores refused to let me use my own bags. it was apparently company policy to make al purchases leave the shop in their branded bag. i left 2 of them without buying anything despite complaining to managers, who wouldnt back down. the other shop only let me have my own way because of the size of the queues and it would have caused too much hassle to refund me!! a good policy to have free advertising as we walk around with their brands / logos!

RosaIsRed · 28/02/2008 23:52

M&S introduced this policy last month where I live. They gave out free bags for life for the first couple of weeks. DH and I have made a solem commitment tonight to take our own bags to the supermarket from now on - I usually do when I am shopping, but DH never does.

Buda · 29/02/2008 08:43

It doesn't take long to get into the mindset of taking bags. I hate having to buy bags now. I make sure I always have bags in my car as does DH.

Here in Budapest most supermarkets charge for bags but trying to buy veg etc without ending up with tons of bags is difficult. I usually weigh things like bananas and cucumbers and just stick the stickers straight on - but in some supermarkets they have somebody weighing and they usually try to put my stuff in a bag - drives me mad.

edam · 29/02/2008 08:48

Pisses me off. Because I a. recycle my plastic bags and b. walk to the shops. So I need carrier bags. It's all very well having bags for life if you are driving, but they are crap for walking home. If they are full, they are too heavy, half empty and the shopping moves around all over the place. And no, I don't always have spare bags in my handbag - my shopping is spontaneous, I often pick things up as I'm passing.

I'm doing no damage to the environment at all compared to people who drive but the system is going to be changed to make life more difficult for me. Moan moan moan...

ruty · 29/02/2008 08:54

good point edam, but building supermarkets in the middle of ring roads with car parks a mile mile long kind of makes it hard to walk to them generally.
Don't know why they can't make plastic bags biodegradable, I'm sure one of the big supermarkets does it, is it Sainsbury's?

needmorecoffee · 29/02/2008 08:56

I use cloth bags and a shopping trolley

edam · 29/02/2008 08:57

Yeah, I think Sainsburys' bags are biodegradable. My local one has a carrier bag recycling point so I take any I don't need back when I'm passing.

I know people can't all walk, but I resent the policy changing without any consideration for those of us who do. Especially as I'm paying a lot extra in terms of house prices to live within walking distance of the shops and station!

ruty · 29/02/2008 08:59

see, there's a lot to be said for those little old ladies' pull along trollies, usually displayed in delightful brown tartan. Bring them back that's what i say!

Buda · 29/02/2008 09:02

You can get some really cool trolleys now ruty! I think we should buy edam one!

ruty · 29/02/2008 09:03

LOL. Have Prada got in on the act yet?

Buda · 29/02/2008 09:05

These are all cool www.reisenthel-shop.de/oxid.php/sid/8e57316d7aebae30fd955fe60959f471/cl/alist/cnid/6b146ef79796b5a49 .35658871.

Buda · 29/02/2008 09:06

Someone on here bought an M&S one recently. It wasn't brown tartan - I think it was purple. Maybe LewisFan?

ruty · 29/02/2008 09:20

like the lime green one. You can count on the germans. Do people under 60 use them though?

ShrinkingViolet · 29/02/2008 09:27

love that they're called Trolls though

prettybird · 29/02/2008 11:46

Before her accident, my mum had started keeping her old string bag in her handbag at all times. As a child of the 60s, I can remember when string bags were normal. In fact, I can remember in the 70s and 80s that there were supermarkets (William Low in particular) which used to give you the option of brown paper bags. That is what I used for pereference - and I even re-used them as liners for my kitchen bin.

Why don't supermrakets start supplying paper bags as an option?

IorekByrnison · 29/02/2008 12:03

It's time for a string bag revival. Where can we get them?

chocolatespiders · 29/02/2008 12:10

string bag company used to do great colours

ruty · 29/02/2008 12:20

Unless they are well made paper bags with handles they tend to break easily though. I suspect they are more expensive to manufacture. String bags sound good [if worryingly vest like]

IorekByrnison · 29/02/2008 12:26

Thanks chocolatespiders - have just ordered one.
