i think it might depen on the shop and where you live

where i live we have a hgh influx of french, spanish and german visitors - peple who live around here and who have a spare room get rewarded handsomely forrenting that rom out to a company who brings the foreign high school students to sunny worthing.

this means at certain times of the yar there is a high % of teenagers.

and it is highly amusing to see how - no matter what country hey come from - they had around at the bus stop, or at the co-op.

it certinly is mass demonisation of a certain age group

when ther are 8 or 9 teenagers that are bigger than yo rowding the enterence to a shop you want to go in, they make fun, ridicule, spit at, swear at, bully into buying beer or fags - then i think that to allow the rest of thepopulation including teenagers who arn't arrogent shitbags to use the shop without fear of reprisals then the classical music thing is a good idea.

i do not agree with the mosquito thing, its terrible

im getting a little bored of "theres nothing for them to do", its not for society to find them something, they should be using their initiative and finding something to do themselves.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2008 14:37

hifi, very easy to say but not for those with no money and/or little imagination.

I don't have a problem with young people hanging around in public places, but I do with certain attitudes.
I don't think insulting, swearing and behaving aggresively should be seen as part of being a teenager. It is perfectly possible to hang around with friends outside a shop, be between 11 and 20 and not behave like a brute.
I know because I used to do it, both in the UK when over here as exchange student, and back in Spain, where drinking and gathering happens outdoors all year round (see "botellón" culture). Interestingly, some councils in Spain have started banning public drinking in town and have set up special areas in the outskirts where hundreds of young people go to drink and socialise. Not sure how well thatwould work here though.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2008 14:44

It's a bit perverse that there are countless council run activities for preschoolers, but from then on they are expected to entertain themselves.

Wisteria · 12/02/2008 14:45

inlovewithsweeney - great name btw - we used to do that in the late 80's early 90's they were called illegal raves

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2008 14:47

lol Wisteria

I still do

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 12/02/2008 14:48

Hmmm, young children need lots of attention and entertainment since they cannot read or write, 2 skills which are basic to do anything else. I would expect a teenager to be interested in kicking a ball sometimes, visit the local library occasionally, or even go to school during the day. The evenings though, that is a different matter. They seem too enjoy too much pockeet money for alcohol methinks.

Wisteria · 12/02/2008 14:50

devil - you still go to illegal raves????? I didn't think they were still happening.....

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2008 14:52

Admittedly not so often post babies but yes!

And they are better than ever (according to my older friends).

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/02/2008 14:54

oops.

Wisteria, it seems an appropraiate time to ask, is Columbus the Dub Explorer still in your possesion?

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 12/02/2008 14:54

wisteria, but these are "legal", basically, the councils have realised that no matter how many facilities there are (we're talking here cities of several tens of thousands of people with lots of things to do and to go to), young people still want to just hang around. So they thought, OK, let's do it in a controlled (by us) manner.
I think it got out of control, because in my time it was a spontaneous thing, you just went to one of the plazas, sit on a bench with your friends, in the next bench there would be another group, etc etc. Now people "organise" things via mobile phones, and thousands of young people who would otherwise have gone somewhere else, just turn up in the same spot!!

Wisteria · 12/02/2008 14:54

no - wasn't he lovely?

I think he lives in Guildford somewhere now...well I hope he does!

Tortington · 12/02/2008 14:55

there is a fundemental fuck up with regards to youth services - thegovernment agenda through youth services means that just simply playing pool or table tennis is firmly a thing of the 80's

so what kid wants to go t the yoofie when its the same authoritarian shit they get at school to focus them for the adult work of further education or work

there needs to be a funemental shift.

places supervised for safety - with basic things to do

my dh was a community worker and we have both ran youth clubs in our time. he had dance mats and magazine corner and a tuck shop full of really horrible things .......sweets - yeah - nowt healty - kids loved it.

they played pool and we did arts and craft activiies

and this was becuase the yoofie catered for children from 7-16

youth services only cater for children over the age of 13

that means if you are 10 - bored shitless and want a packet of fags - best go to co-op and terrorise

I had to....was a bad time in my life and things were very tight; single working Mum before the days of tax credits , a ford escort was just more practical for work......

I do regret it though....and would buy him back like a shot - he was restored by my own fair hands (with a little help from my friends).

UnquietDad · 12/02/2008 15:02

Imagining barbarian's device like the sinister speaker thing which comes out of the ground in "Teletubbies"!

barbarianoftheuniverse · 12/02/2008 15:11

No, no UQD very small and slim and expensive. Something you can just wear on the back of your wrist and flash at people.

PenelopePitstops · 12/02/2008 15:13

hifi......bored teens are finding thigs to do, hang around outside shops, because they have little else to do

near me at home (I'm 19) when I was in year 9 a group of people set about trying to get a skate park funded and built in our local (smallish 6000 people) town. It took them until I was in year 11 to secure funding, and then yer 12 before building began. I had no interest in a skate park so did not get involved, but now it is one of the busiest places in the town as its something for one group of teenagers to do. Its relatively safe and in the dark a lot of teenagers hang around there under ramps etc in the dry.

What did society do with teengers in the 60s 60 and 80s?
