I'm probably going to cause a lot of controversy here, thats not my intention it's with genuine interest do you support these strikes?

I 100% support the strikes especially having worked in social care and for the NHS and seeing the issues with my own eyes.

*Why is it clown territory? In real terms NHS workers have taken a pay cut for years.

We should be livid with the Tories and rioting in the streets*

Yawn. DH is NHS and on about £115k - hardly starvation rations. It’s clown territory because everyone knows - including you I suspect - that no bugger will come out of this with a 20% pay rise. But hopefully the army drivers who are already paid about 30% LESS than the paramedics will stop too many old ladies dying because you lot fancy an extended Christmas break.

You riot if you like. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What a twatty post.

I'm fine with 115k coming in - which is so obviously not what 99% of the NHS is on but because I'm fine, you lot need to stop moaning. What a bitch.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 08/12/2022 15:10

I feel that the ‘rioting ‘ and the anti Tory rhetoric rather hinder the discussion of the very real problem under discussion .( and it’s so boring, because the posters have absolutely no real fiscal solution which some other political party could instantly adopt).

I also think the people doing those jobs have had a chance to step off the treadmill - during multiple imposed covid isolations, when they might have been well - and realised how much it impacts their health and wellbeing. Now, agency and non-healthcare jobs pay more than they're getting, with less stress and better conditions, and they know they have other options, and they know what it feels like to be off the treadmill.

We should be worried about the quality of healthcare staff we'll have in a few years time if pay and conditions don't improve.

very true, that's bound to play into it isnt it!

Reading comprehension not a strong point? The PP said “NHS staff have had real terms pay cuts” and I pointed out that not be all “NHS staff” are on the bones of their arse. There might be a case for raising in some areas, but 20% is laughable, counterproductive and suggests your union reps are not serving you well.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 08/12/2022 18:28

Fuck YES. 100%.
This is for NHS staff now and for future NHS staff.
No matter the outcome, there has been bravery shown here beyond the bravery shown during covid.
What it takes for someone to vote for strike action is huge.
HUGE.
So yes, 100%.

Is your DH in management or hands on in the NHS?

Extended Christmas break smh

dementedma · 08/12/2022 21:01

I feel sorry for our Armed Forces personnel who, having accepted a 3% pay rise, have had Christmas leave cancelled so that they can cover for strikers who earn more than they do!

OliverBabish · 08/12/2022 21:09

That 115k post is vile. Absolutely disgusting. “Sod you Jack, I’m in the boat”

but you know what they say! It’s the ones who earn the least that do the most. That’s 100% the case where I work.

I’m a nurse and I absolutely support the strikes (I will not be striking because I am not in the Union - I cannot afford it)

Icedlatteplease · 08/12/2022 21:22

No I don't support the strike. I don't believe it should be allowed for ambulance or nursing staff.

It's the vulnerable people who will die because they have no family to step up to the breech I feel sorry for.

Thats why I wondered if her DH was in management ;)

I get why you feel like that, really, it's my knee jerk reaction too...in a way
however if you work a very stressful & traumatising job, yet the pay & conditions are bad plus you have no power to improve them, what will you do?
Leave, that's what
Lots of people already are, do you think taking away the last bit of power they had will make them want to stay?
What are we to do as a country? Fewer and fewer of us are prepared to run the gauntlet of these essential roles and we arent willing or able to do anything to make those roles more attractive!

Soothsayer1 · 08/12/2022 23:55

I think other countries use some kind of forced labour, or perhaps those incarcerated to do work that no-one else is willing to do?

GratefulCheddar · 08/12/2022 23:59

I want to see an actual plan however pie in the sky for proposals to pay NHS staff better pay and also how to sort out the NHS. I don’t disagree it’s in a state it really is but what is the answer.

I read it would be 28 billion a year for this rise, what taxes or shuffling around of budgets is proposed by any other party or think tank.

nhsstrikes · 09/12/2022 00:06

Sorry I'm changing my username for this (for obvious reasons!)
Our Trust has raised salaries this year by more than we had in budget. The general pay increase wasn't an overall equal percentage, rather the £1,400 across all bands. Which meant 8% at the lowest band. Because the Trust hadn't budgeted for this, the Government agreement was effectively unfunded and this has left a deficit. Our Trust doesn't have the money to pay for what the Government agreed.

So any successful strike action now will only lead to Trusts having to reduce services, cut staff etc in order to pay additional salary increases. This won't happen. The unions know this too. Obviously the unions would rather save jobs (but don't make this clear) rather than get pay increases which result in job loss. This isn't publicised so not really debated.
There's only so much money in the pot!

By the way, last month 45% of appointments were missed in one of our locations and it isn't unusual. This is huge. Let's concentrate on better use and efficiency of our existing services, which could in turn lead to better pay (due to more resources and dare I say it, tax payers' money!).

It’s not often I’m lost for words, but here we are.
What a truly awful post, I hope you look back on it and realise what a c* you look like.

Perhaps your DH would like to share his wage with those who are working for the NHS and struggling to heat their homes? Thought not…
Prick.

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 13/12/2022 09:21

Why on earth do you think your opinion might cause controversy?

It hasn't

And yes I support them

Vinvertebrate · 13/12/2022 12:02

Another person in the hard of thinking club.

The statement by a PP on this thread that NHS workers are universally on the bones of their arse is inaccurate - I gave my DH as an example. He’s not unique. Some are badly paid, some are on decent-ish money and there are whole swathes of the UK where the NHS pays more than most other employers. As ever it’s more nuanced than it might first appear - although that’s clearly going over your head.

We give 10% of our joint income to a cancer charity and have done since 2006. What do you do @mattyprice4004 other than virtue signal and insult people?
