'The judges also attacked Three Little Cowboy Builders for offending builders. '

the judges sound bonkers actually

Blu · 23/01/2008 14:59

I wasn't aware that the Q'uran prohibited looking at two dimensional pictures of pigs! They're being offered in a fictional, virtual story on a CD - not in a sausage on a RL plate!

LOL at 3 little cowboy builders!

fuzzywuzzy · 23/01/2008 15:02

It should be noted that altho the sub trumpets that it's not to offend muslims, no real muslims have been upset by the book....

Wonder of no real jewish people are equally apathetic to the situation, and if so why that religion is not mentioned at all....

margoandjerry · 23/01/2008 15:03

When are people going to get a grip?

I am offended by people who are offended by pigs (and this means I am offended by the judges as well as the possibly non-existent muslims who are taking offence)

UnquietDad · 23/01/2008 15:03

Oh, God, please don't let my mother hear about this... she'll be on the phone again banging on about how "they" are destroying the fabric of life in this "Christian country"...

UnquietDad · 23/01/2008 15:04

Let's also ban "Hansel and Gretel" for its stereotypical and offensive portrayal of withes which might offend Wiccans... and "Snow White" for its cliched depictions of Small people...

PortAndLemon · 23/01/2008 15:05

They do sound bonkers, but it's not actually "banned", is it? "3 little pigs fails to win obscure award", rather.

pukkapatch · 23/01/2008 15:11

i dont think any real muslims would be offended by the three little pigs.
pigs are God's creatures, just like all the others. the only thing God has forbidden muslims from doing is eating them. just like He has forbidden the eating of lions and tigers and dogs and other carnivores. anyone who gets hot and bothered by such a non issue needs to rethink what being a muslim is actually all about. perhaps have a proper look at the religion they profess to being their own.

bundle · 23/01/2008 15:11

apologies for inappropriate use of word "banned".

but I did use speech marks.

I should be banned

"The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

No, its not true, it is a fairy tale, a fictional story! This has got to be the funniest article ever, the judges are clearly bonkers.

kiskidee · 23/01/2008 15:17

i thought the problem would be because it offended the police.

Reallytired · 23/01/2008 15:18

It does seem silly as no muslim has actually objected to the book.

If this had appeared on 1st April I would have thought it was an April fool's joke.

margoandjerry · 23/01/2008 15:23

I'm thinking all these stories actually create a problem that doesn't exist otherwise. There was another thread about a woman who was asked to stop singing "This little piggie" on the bus with her son as it was offensive. I assume what happens is that a not very thoughtful Muslim reads that a story about pigs has been banned. Assumes therefore that the very concept of pigs is offensive to her and that this is somehow sanctioned by the Muslim authorities and goes round telling people to stop singing nursery rhymes.

All depressing and pointless.

PiggyPigPigPiggerinEck · 23/01/2008 16:52

why don't they just eff off with THEIR offensiveness!

oink!

Peachy · 23/01/2008 16:57

Oh FFS

I would imagine the average Muslim will be looking at that wondering what on Earth is going on!

Now what REALLy bothers me about that story is that the decision was made by a bunch of judges persumably trying to be non-offensive, yet the anti-PC bunch will see it as another piece of evidence that british Culture is being destroyed by the Immigrants.

Whereas it is just misguided bollocks.

FWIW I have read the Qur'an 9and the OT- why do peole forget jews, which indeed included Jesus, don't eat pork either)- and have yet to notice the passage banning pigs in children's traditional literature.

Blandmum · 23/01/2008 17:04

farcical. And I', betting that the judge is 'theoretically' Christian.

3 little billy goats will be out as it offends Tolls..
hansel and Gretel show children how to play with cookers.
Sleeping beauty is offensive to people of restricted height

Jack and the giant killer is sizist and might offend people with acromegaly

HappiesGlamore · 23/01/2008 17:11

what a bunch of twonks. (the judges)

smartiejake · 23/01/2008 17:53

Oh ffs how ridiculous!
I read post the other day on here from a mum who was doing "this little piggy went to market" with her dc and some mad woman tried to get her thrown off the bus they were on claiming to the bus driver that she was being offensive to muslims and therefore racist!

sushifan · 23/01/2008 19:42

I don't believe this! I'm Muslim and I grew up with this story! I wish people would just be more reasonable. We even have little toy pigs. Never occurred to me or my family not to look at pictures of pigs. Silly silly silly.

sushifan · 23/01/2008 19:45

oh, I just saw other posts saying that they doubt any Muslim has been offended. Well, no Muslim that I know has ever been offended by pig stories or pig pictures.

edam · 23/01/2008 19:47

I find it very scary that this bunch of idiots have any involvement in education policy. Never heard of 'Becta, the government's educational technology agency' before. And not impressed now I have.

redadmiral · 23/01/2008 19:48

My brother-in-law is Muslim. Very laid back and not at all strict, but he does really have a thing about pigs! I bought a wooden farmyard mobile before I knew, and the pig stayed for a while before it was removed. Nieces weren't allowed to wear winnie the pooh tops due to a certain animal...

sushifan · 23/01/2008 19:51

Redadmiral, that is interesting. I guess my upbringing was very liberal in comparison. I love piglet! I really do. I just don't eat piglets! I have to say, I haven't given it much thought, but then, it's not the kind of thing that merits it. I'm very laid back about these kinds of things.

morningpaper · 23/01/2008 19:51

It's nothing to do with education, and it's not banned, it's just NOT BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR AN OBSCURE PRIZE THAT NONE OF US WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE HEARD OF

Maybe a nice bit of PR for the prize though, eh?

redadmiral · 23/01/2008 19:59

Me too, sushisan. It is just a kind of interesting fact to me, though once I knew this I used to get a bit tense when people would suggets pigs for the animal in 'Old Macdonald' at loacl playgroups. It's actually quite a relief to know that maybe most Muslims don't really mind either way.
