It has been reported that a 2 year old child has died after being mauled by 3 'out of control' dogs.

When will these tragedies stop?

When people stop buying aggressive dogs I suppose.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 30/03/2022 19:27

It’s awful. I suspect with the increase of people buying dogs with absolutely no understanding of how to train them or the amount of effort to look after them and exercise they need it’s only going to get worse.

So incredibly sad Sad

The powers that be really need to do better here at our measures in place around responsible dog ownership. I'm really not sure what more it will take to get some sort of regulation in place

Frigginintheriggin · 30/03/2022 20:12

Any dog has the propensity to bite.
It is entirely the responsibility of the owner that their dog is never in a situation where it could harm anyone.
Whether thats outside in a park or in their own home.

Automatic custodial sentences for individuals whose dogs kill or maim.

Keeping dogs seems to be the UKs version of Americans keeping guns.

I totally agree with this statement. Sandy Hook comes to mind and the response of gun lobby in the US.

Dog owners see nothing wrong with dogs in urban areas at all. There is hardly room for people now!

Dogs should be for working only, e.g. service dogs and sheep dogs.

I wonder which will go first, heat/food or the dog in the current economic climate. My bet is heat/food before the dog.

So sorry to hear of another dog attack and death of a poor child.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 05/04/2022 17:48

Because people have massive (or even average sized) dogs in three bed semis with small gardens.

An ex-friend keeps a dog in a tiny house. Landlord won’t allow the dog to go in the garden because he digs and poops and he’s not allowed upstairs. His ‘space’ is a small lounge and a kitchen.

He’s only a puppy, they don’t realise he’ll grow.

These animals need except use and space.

Is this the incident you were referring to? The dog looks like it’s pure muscle.(not actual dog, but the breed)

Sorry, I think this is what you referring to. Two children both killed by dogs in the space of a couple of weeks. How sad.

Mumoblue · 05/04/2022 17:55

These stories make me so sad and so nervous.
I grew up with dogs, decently sized ones too. I had two large dogs growing up and I never had even the slightest concern that they might bite, and my aunt used to bring over her huge dopey Rottweiler and me and the other kids would play with her.

These days because of all these stories I don’t know how people trust dogs around their kids! Maybe I’m paranoid but it just seems like a risk I couldn’t take. If my cat bites my son he’d be sad but a dog bite could be fatal. Sad

Is this due to badly socialised “pandemic puppies”? Are dog attacks increasing or are they just being highlighted more, I wonder.

More common I think. I read something recently about a&e stats on dog attacks increasing, I'll try and find the link.

I've just seen a FB post by a friend of mine and she has laid her 3mo DC in the dog basket with her two staffies and the dogs look really unhappy about it. I had to look and look again to take in what I was seeing.

Genuinely appalling !

^ The most effective deterrent.
picklemewalnuts · 05/04/2022 18:03

I think the trend of babifying dogs, and instagramming kids is a recipe for disaster.
Dogs aren't understood as the animals they are but as props for great photos.

Theunamedcat · 05/04/2022 18:10

I keep cats but growing up we always had family dogs they were well socialised but any aggressive behaviour and they were put to sleep my grandparents dog was put to sleep for biting grandad as he went to pick up my sister who was a baby at the time full on launched himself at him these days he probably would have been rehomed via Facebook but he was increasing his attacks around children no-one could touch them around the dog so the dog had to go

It was sad but choices need to be made one of the dog attacks was from a dog bought on Facebook (? An adult dog bought recently I'm assuming Facebook) this would never have happened before

Bjarnum · 05/04/2022 18:38

Not just children. Ghastly story in the paper- a woman came out of a coma to discover she had both arms amputated and a colostemy bag after being savaged by 3 pitbulls. Then there are the much loved pets attacked by uncontrolled dogs. Why do people need to have these muscular breeds?

Unforgettablefire · 05/04/2022 18:39

As much as I love dogs I’d be very wary of taking one in that had its ears cropped like this.

MiniDaffodils · 05/04/2022 18:47

In this time of climate emergency, and with the notable exception of assistance and working dogs, no one should be getting dogs. They are a luxury the planet cannot afford as they have a very high carbon paw print.

And they shit everywhere, and the plastic bags with their shit are put in hedges and tree branches if not left on the ground, and they shed hair, so out comes the vacuum to use up electricity, and they have sharp teeth, and they need the vet, and they should be working dogs, paying NI and contributing to society.

Why would that work here, when it has hardly stopped murders ?
Theunamedcat · 05/04/2022 19:37

Because murderers arnt always given a sentence ever heard of the tough sex defense? One woman managed to slice open her own back with a knife and the poor man couldn't do a thing but let her bleed to death he was so scared 😢

Theunamedcat · 05/04/2022 19:40

Sorry rough sex defence
