MPs to get pay rise of £2,000 in April

This is shameful, whilst many brits are struggling to pay for food and heating.
Now we will have to chose between eating and keeping warm.

MPs will get a pay rise of more than £2,000 this year as many British people struggle with soaring energy and food costs.
The decision brings their overall salary from £81,932 to £84,144 from April 1 2022 – an exact increase of £2,212 per year.

Like myself I'm a parent 2 3 children and on a low income. I know I'll be struggling like many others.

What is other people thoughts on this

So like a lot of other people they'll be a bit worse off in real terms this year. I'm not going to weep for them, but of all the things to get irate about, "fairly highly paid individuals get 2.5% pay rise in a year with pretty high inflation" is low down the list.

jadey1991 · 01/03/2022 17:33

I don't think they will be worse off. They are laughing. Poor nhs staff don't get a decent pay rise. I don't even get half of that in a year.

They don’t vote for it themselves, you know?

jadey1991 · 01/03/2022 17:39

I didn't say they do but it's shameful. What did they really do during the pandemic other then have parties.... 😕😕😕
On April 1 National Insurance is rising by 1.25 per cent, council tax is going up and millions more will be dragged into the higher income tax bracket.
Families will also pay hundreds more in heating bills as the energy price cap is raised by around £700 to nearly £2,000.

It’s almost laughable. People keep voting for these clowns.

jadey1991 · 01/03/2022 17:44

Like we haven't struggled enough the past 2 years.

The problem is that if we want a socially diverse Parliament - one not filled with ex Eton types, and those who do actually understand the issues the OP speaks about, then we do need to pay MPs on a par with what people might typically expect in other jobs.

Because if we don't, we'll only recruit from among the millionaires who can afford to swan about doing public service and being paid below what they could typically earn in other jobs, thus narrowing the field of prospective MPs down considerably.

biggreenhouse · 01/03/2022 17:54

loads of industries will be giving their annual inflation pay rise.. I was quite pleased to see they wee only taking 2.5% which is a lot lower than it could have been.

FrippEnos · 01/03/2022 17:56

@BaliB

They don’t vote for it themselves, you know?
Although its 'suggested' by an independent body, don't the politicians actually vote to ratify it?
Shmithecat2 · 01/03/2022 18:01

It's a 2.6% payrise.

jadey1991 · 01/03/2022 18:02

@biggreenhouse the issue we have here is they shouldn't be getting more then the front line workers. People who were actually in the frontline.

Some people will agree with me and some won't.

@TabithaTittlemouse

It’s almost laughable. People keep voting for these clowns.
It's irrelevant which political party is elected, the pay rise is decided by an independence pay review body.
AlexaShutUp · 02/03/2022 17:46

It's below inflation so not really unreasonable but I think it's utterly tone deaf under the current circumstances.

WhatchaGotThere · 02/03/2022 18:06

@jadey1991 I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Not only is it tone deaf in the current climate, it feels like a kick in the face to those who are struggling. I would love to know what exactly they did that was worth more than the measly 1% increase originally offered to our NHS workers. It’s shameful. I am embarrassed to be British right now.

BbqFanatic · 02/03/2022 18:21

Pay seems okay for the job role. There are IT architects on considerably higher salaries than this. You couldn't compare salaries for politicians with health care market rates.

jadey1991 · 02/03/2022 22:52

@WhatchaGotThere thank you... I was actually gobsmacked when the announced that us(including myself) was only getting a 1%pay rise. I have been in the frontline since pandemic has started and worked my arse off. It's only now I'm am on maternity leave that I have really rested... I don't see any difference to my pay but mps will...

OP posts:
jadey1991 · 02/03/2022 22:53

@BbqFanatic I think we can compare. I'm sure retail workers are getting more of a pay rise then the health service

OP posts:
Mammyloveswine · 02/03/2022 22:55

Im a teacher...pretty sure my pay has been frozen..i earn less than half wjhaf mps get...

Cyw2018 · 02/03/2022 23:02

I'd rather have my current pay with no pay rise in the NHS than £80k as an MP right now. They have to try and make the correct decision on Putin and the Ukraine, and no one knows what that is, and if they get it wrong we are all doomed.

Let them have their 2.6% pay rise. Because I wouldn't do their job this week for all the money in the world.

MiniDaffodils · 02/03/2022 23:03

I am a TA and not getting any pay rise. MPs are despicable if they take the rise Angry

jadey1991 · 02/03/2022 23:11

I'm sorry to hear you are not getting a pay rise @MiniDaffodils and @Cyw2018 and @Mammyloveswine

I do agree with you @Cyw2018 I wouldn't do there job myself.

OP posts:
BbqFanatic · 03/03/2022 12:00

You should challenge your pay rise percentage. But the jobs are not comparable so not sure why you expect salary rise to be aligned from two different sectors. You would take the additional rise if given, then why object to pay rise in a sector you don't work in?

jadey1991 · 03/03/2022 16:43

@BbqFanatic ok, clearly you don't mind the mps pay rise but do you think it's okay for myself and nhs staff to get a 1% pay rise.

OP posts:
BbqFanatic · 03/03/2022 17:37

No, it should be higher and should match inflation at least. But focusing on pay from a different sector for an unrelated job to yours is like comparing apples to oranges and doesn't make a good case. NHS employees deserve more pay rise, no doubt.

jadey1991 · 03/03/2022 18:40

@BbqFanatic ok I just needed to clarify. Thank you
